    A longer XMM-Newton look at I Zwicky 1: Distinct modes of X-ray spectral variability

    The short-term spectral variability of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 (I Zw 1) as observed in an 85 ks XMM-Newton observation is discussed in detail. I Zw 1 shows distinct modes of variability prior to and after a flux dip in the broad-band light curve. Before the dip the variability can be described as arising from changes in shape and normalisation of the spectral components. Only changes in normalisation are manifested after the dip. The change in the mode of behaviour occurs on dynamically short timescales in I Zw 1. The data suggest that the accretion-disc corona in I Zw 1 could have two components that are co-existing. The first, a uniform, physically diffuse plasma responsible for the "typical'' long-term (e.g. years) behaviour; and a second compact, centrally located component causing the rapid flux and spectral changes. This compact component could be the base of a short or aborted jet as sometimes proposed for radio-quiet active galaxies. Modelling of the average and time-resolved rms spectra demonstrate that a blurred Compton-reflection model can describe the spectral variability if we allow for pivoting of the continuum component prior to the dip.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures.     Revealing structure and evolution within the corona of the Seyfert galaxy I Zw 1

    X-ray spectral timing analysis is presented of XMM-Newton observations of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 (I Zw 1) taken in 2015 January. After exploring the effect of background flaring on timing analyses, X-ray time lags between the reflection-dominated 0.3-1.0keV energy and continuum-dominated 1.0-4.0keV band are measured, indicative of reverberation off the inner accretion disc. The reverberation lag time is seen to vary as a step function in frequency; across lower frequency components of the variability, 3e-4 to 1.2e-3Hz a lag of 160s is measured, but the lag shortens to (59 +/- 4)s above 1.2e-3Hz. The lag-energy spectrum reveals differing profiles between these ranges with a change in the dip showing the earliest arriving photons. The low frequency signal indicates reverberation of X-rays emitted from a corona extended at low height over the disc while at high frequencies, variability is generated in a collimated core of the corona through which luminosity fluctuations propagate upwards. Principal component analysis of the variability supports this interpretation, showing uncorrelated variation in the spectral slope of two power law continuum components. The distinct evolution of the two components of the corona is seen as a flare passes inwards from the extended to the collimated portion. An increase in variability in the extended corona was found preceding the initial increase in X-ray flux. Variability from the extended corona was seen to die away as the flare passed into the collimated core leading to a second sharper increase in the X-ray count rate.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures.     Use of Legumes in Extrusion Cooking: A Review

    The traditional perception that legumes would not be suitable for extrusion cooking is now completely outdated. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have been conducted to assess the behavior of various types of legume flours in extrusion cooking, proving that legumes have excellent potential for the production of extruded ready-to-eat foods by partially or totally replacing cereals. This review identifies the optimal processing conditions for legume-based and legume-added extruded foods, which allow the improvement of the expansion ratio and give the extrudates the spongy and crisp structure expected by consumers. In particular, the effect of the individual processing parameters on the physical-chemical and nutritional properties of the final product is highlighted. The extrusion cooking process, indeed, has a positive effect on nutritional characteristics, because it induces important modifications on starch and proteins, enhancing their digestibility, and reduces the content of trypsin inhibitors, lectins, phytic acid, and tannins, typically present in legumes. Therefore, the extrusion of legume flours is a viable strategy to improve their nutritional features while reducing home preparation time, so as to increase the consumption of these sustainable crops

    We consider a system of Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations, where the dependence of the coefficients is nonlinear and nonlocal in time with respect to the unknowns. We extend the numerical scheme proposed and studied recently by the authors for a single FPK equation of this type. We analyse the convergence of the scheme and we study its applicability in two examples.     A longer XMM-Newton look at I Zwicky 1: Variability of the X-ray continuum, absorption, and iron Kalpha line

    We present the second XMM-Newton observation (85 ks) of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) I Zw 1 and describe its mean spectral and timing characteristics. On average, I Zw 1 is ~35 per cent dimmer in 2005 than in the shorter (20 ks) 2002 observation. Between the two epochs the intrinsic absorption column density diminished, but there were also subtle changes in the continuum shape. Considering the blurred ionised reflection model, the long-term changes can be associated with a varying contribution of the power law component relative to the total spectrum. Examination of normalised light curves indicates that the high-energy variations are quite structured and that there are delays, but only in some parts of the light curve. Interestingly, a hard X-ray lag first appears during the most-distinct structure in the mean light curve, a flux dip ~25 ks into the observation. The previously discovered broad, ionised Fe Ka line shows significant variations over the course of the 2005 observation. The amplitude of the variations is 25-45 per cent and they are unlikely due to changes in the Fe ka-producing region, but perhaps arise from orbital motion around the black hole or obscuration in the broad iron line-emitting region. The 2002 data are re-examined for variability of the Fe Ka line at that epoch.     Dust absorption and scattering in the silicon K-edge

    The composition and properties of interstellar silicate dust are not well understood. In X-rays, interstellar dust can be studied in detail by making use of the fine structure features in the Si K-edge. The features in the Si K-edge offer a range of possibilities to study silicon-bearing dust, such as investigating the crystallinity, abundance, and the chemical composition along a given line of sight. We present newly acquired laboratory measurements of the silicon K-edge of several silicate-compounds that complement our measurements from our earlier pilot study. The resulting dust extinction profiles serve as templates for the interstellar extinction that we observe. The extinction profiles were used to model the interstellar dust in the dense environments of the Galaxy. The laboratory measurements, taken at the Soleil synchrotron facility in Paris, were adapted for astrophysical data analysis and implemented in the SPEX spectral fitting program. The models were used to fit the spectra of nine low-mass X-ray binaries located in the Galactic center neighborhood in order to determine the dust properties along those lines of sight. Most lines of sight can be fit well by amorphous olivine. We also established upper limits on the amount of crystalline material that the modeling allows. We obtained values of the total silicon abundance, silicon dust abundance, and depletion along each of the sightlines. We find a possible gradient of 0.06±0.020.06\pm0.02 dex/kpc for the total silicon abundance versus the Galactocentric distance.     Early marker of ocular neurodegeneration in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: the contributing role of polymorphisms in mir146a and mir128a genes

    Background: Early ocular neurodegenerative signs of diabetic neuropathy (DN) can be found in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). No data are available on the potential role of polymorphisms in miRNAs genes in predisposing T1D subjects to these signs. Aims: To determine whether MIR146A rs2910164 and MIR128A rs11888095 polymorphisms are associated with early retinal and corneal neurodegenerative changes in pediatric patients with T1D. Methods: A total of 140 T1D children/adolescents underwent spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) with measurement of retinal and corneal nerve fiber parameters. Risk factors for diabetes complications (diabetes duration, blood pressure, HbA1c) were recorded. Genotyping of rs2910164 and rs1188095 SNPs and genotype-phenotype association analysis were performed. Results: The C allele of rs2910164 in MIR146A was associated with higher values of IVCM parameters and minimum rim width (MRW) of the peripapillary region of optic nerve head measured in the retina, whereas the T allele of rs1188095 in MIR128A was associated with a significant impairment of them. Multiple regression analysis showed that MIR146A and MIR128A polymorphisms were significantly associated with corneal nerve fiber length (beta = 0.225 and - 0.204, respectively) and other IVCM parameters, independently from age, diabetes duration, HbA1c and systolic blood pressure percentile. Similar results were found for MRW (beta = 0.213 and - 0.286, respectively). Conclusions: These results provide new insight into the genetic predisposition to DN showing that two polymorphisms in MIR146A and MIR128A genes could significantly contribute to the development of early ocular preclinical signs of DN

    Insight into phenotypic and genotypic differences between vaginal lactobacillus crispatus bc5 and lactobacillus gasseri bc12 to unravel nutritional and stress factors influencing their metabolic activity

    The vaginal microbiota, normally characterized by lactobacilli presence, is crucial for vaginal health. Members belonging to L. crispatus and L. gasseri species exert crucial protective functions against pathogens, although a total comprehension of factors that influence their dominance in healthy women is still lacking. Here we investigated the complete genome sequence and comprehensive phenotypic profile of L. crispatus strain BC5 and L. gasseri strain BC12, two vaginal strains featured by anti-bacterial and anti-viral activities. Phenotype microarray (PM) results revealed an improved capacity of BC5 to utilize different carbon sources as compared to BC12, although some specific carbon sources that can be associated to the human diet were only metabolized by BC12, i.e. uridine, amygdalin, tagatose. Additionally, the two strains were mostly distinct in the capacity to utilize the nitrogen sources under analysis. On the other hand, BC12 showed tolerance/resistance towards twice the number of stressors (i.e. antibiotics, toxic metals etc.) with respect to BC5. The divergent phenotypes observed in PM were supported by the identification in either BC5 or BC12 of specific genetic determinants that were found to be part of the core genome of each species. The PM results in combination with comparative genome data provide insights into the possible environmental factors and genetic traits supporting the predominance of either L. crispatus BC5 or L. gasseri BC12 in the vaginal niche, giving also indications for metabolic predictions at the species level
