Bifurcation analysis of the twist-Freedericksz transition in a nematic liquid-crystal cell with pre-twist boundary conditions

Motivated by a recent investigation of Millar and McKay [Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst., 435, 277/[937]-286/[946] (2005)], we study the magnetic field twist-Fr´eedericksz transition for a nematic liquid crystal of positive diamagnetic anisotropy with strong anchoring and pre- twist boundary conditions. Despite the pre-twist, the system still possesses Z2 symmetry and a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation, which occurs at a critical magnetic-field strength that, as we prove, is above the threshold for the classical twist-Fr´eedericksz tran- sition (which has no pre-twist). It was observed numerically by Millar and McKay that this instability occurs precisely at the point at which the ground-state solution loses its monotonicity (with respect to the position coordinate across the cell gap). We explain this surprising observation using a rigorous phase-space analysis

Image Processing of Temperature Fields from Infrared Termography of Micro-Mixers with Polymeric Substrates

International audienceThe present work deals with the image processing and thermal analysis of micro-mixers from the data provided by an infrared camera thermography system. The micro-mixers are prepared by photolitography on a polymeric substrate and the camera employed is the FLIR SC645 with the proprietary software ThermaCam Researcher Pro v2.10. The thermal analysis is aimed at understanding the direct contact heat transfer between two fluid streams and the polymeric substrate at different inlet temperatures and mass flow rates, within mixers of various geometric configurations. Infrared thermography is thus employed to measure the external wall temperatures fields along the mixer length. Water at different inlet temperatures has been used as the working fluid in all cases and the mass flow rates of the two streams have been imposed through independent syringe pumps. The image processing and analysis of the experimental results show the basic qualitative and quantitative features of the heat transfer phenomena and indicates that a conjugated heat transfer formulation of the micro-mixer structure should be pursued for accurate quantitative analysis in theoretical predictions

Intersecting Noncommutative D-branes and Baryons in Magnetic Fields

    Get PDF
We study supersymmetric intersecting configurations of D-branes with B-field backgrounds. Noncommutative D-brane or M-brane pairs can intersect supersymmetrically over (p-1)-brane, as well as over (p-2)-brane like ordinary branes. d=10 and d=11 supergravity solutions are obtained and the supersymmetry projection rule is examined. As an application we study a noncommutative D7-brane probe in noncommutative D3-brane background, intersecting at noncommutative plane, which describes BPS baryons of noncommutative gauge theory in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence.Comment: 15 pages;several important references are added and typos correcte

The Association between Childhood Obesity and Cardiovascular Changes in 10 Years Using Special Data Science Analysis

    Get PDF
The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity is a worldwide problem, with several well-known consequences that might start to develop early in life during childhood. The present research based on data from children that have been followed since birth in a previously established cohort study (Generation XXI, Porto, Portugal), taking advantage of State-of-the-Art (SoA) data science techniques and methods, including Neural Architecture Search (NAS), explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), and Deep Learning (DL), aimed to explore the hidden value of data, namely on electrocardiogram (ECG) records performed during follow-up visits. The combination of these techniques allowed us to clarify subtle cardiovascular changes already present at 10 years of age, which are evident from ECG analysis and probably induced by the presence of obesity. The proposed novel combination of new methodologies and techniques is discussed, as well as their applicability in other health domains.João Rala Cordeiro received support from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (PhD Research Scholarship reference 2020.07443.BD)
