Several national and internationalorganizations have been conducting extensive evalua-tions of published data in an effort to refine theirestimates of the guideline/threshold exposure levelsabove which a specific agent represent a clear healthhazard, in the advent of the new exposure assessmenttools and methodologies, more sophisticated modelsand a better understanding of disease processes.This special issue of Journal of Toxicology andEnvironmental Health aims to promote internationalrecognition of the most recent environmental andoccupational toxicology, and public health researchprogress. This volume contains a series of articles thatdiscuss a broad range of contemporary issues includ-ing how the body reacts to environmental pollutantsand stressors, and cover the many effects of environ-mental factors highlighting physical, chemical andbiological agents. It also address susceptible popula-tions; biomarkers and risk analysis; the scientific basisfor policy decision; occupational health and emergingglobal environmental problems. It should be empha-sized that toxic agents addressed in this issue are ofconcern from both local and international perspec-tives. For instance, research on PAHs has receivedsustained worldwide attention.The original basis for this set of articles was the 3rdInternational Conference on Occupational &Environmental Toxicology (ICOETox2016) heldtogether with the 3rd Ibero-American Meeting onToxicology and Environmental Health International(IBAMTOX 2016) on 21-23 June 2016 in Porto,Portugal. The conference brought together over 150scientists, experts and practitioners from 20 differentEuropean countries and both Americas. Following arigorous peer review process, nineteen articles, sub-mitted by presenting authors, were selected forpublication.A large number of scientists were involved in thepresentation of this special issue, both authors andreviewers, and we are grateful to all of them for theircontribution. They have our sincere gratitude for thetime devoted to these manuscripts that together resultin high-quality data to the larger international sciencecommunity. A heart-felt thanks is also extended toProfessor Sam Kacew who encouraged and promotedthe publication of this special issue dedicated toresearch on toxicology and environmental health.We also acknowledge the generous support of theNational Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge(INSA), Institute of Public Health of University ofPorto (ISPUP) and European Societies of Toxicology(EUROTOX) to the conference.What about the future?
