An Examination of the Emergence of the Queer Figure in North American Culture Using a Queer Marxist Theoretical Framework

This thesis develops a new sociological perspective entitled “Queer Marxism,” a neo Marxist perspective on gender identity, gender expression, and gender oppression that incorporates Judith Butler’s queer perspective of gender performativity. Using this Queer Marxist framework, this thesis will identify an existing tension, due to emerging contradictions within the North American capitalist structure, between the current realities of gendered bodies and the dominant gender binary ideology of North American society. In reflecting on this tension, this project will argue that non-normative genders (and sexualities) are gaining more recognition and validation at a cultural level which, in turn, serves to only further contradict the hegemonic presence of the gender binary ideology that is upheld by the dominant socio-political and economic structures of North America society. As a result, the cultural forces of gender based domination and subordination that support the relations of capital have begun to destabilize, diversifying gender performativity as a consequence

A BODIPY derivative functionalized with a phenyl group at the meso-position was synthesized and characterized through 1H NMR and UV–Vis absorption/emission spectroscopies. The compound showed an absorption band at 497 nm and a fluorescence band at 513 nm, with a ΦF = 0.68 in acetonitrile. The evaluation of the chemosensing ability of the BODIPY was investigated in the presence of several ions with environmental and biomedical relevance. A highly selective fluorimetric response was observed for Fe3+ through fluorescence quenching upon successive additions of this cation. The authors acknowledge Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia—FCT (Portugal) for funding through CQUM (UID/QUI/00686/2020) and a PhD grant to R.C.R. Antisymmetric Tensor Fields in Randall Sundrum Thick Branes

In this article we study the issue of localization of the three-form field in a Randall-Sundrum-like scenario. We simulate our membrane by kinks embedded in D=5, describing the usual case (not deformed) and new models coming from a specific deformation procedure. The gravitational background regarded includes the dilaton contribution. We show that we can only localize the zero-mode of this field for a specific range of the dilaton coupling, even in the deformed case. A study about resonances is presented. We use a numerical approach for calculations of the transmission coefficients associated to the quantum mechanical problem. This gives a clear description of the physics involved in the model. We find in this way that the appearance of resonances is strongly dependent on the coupling constant. We study the cases p=1,3p=1,3 and 5 for α=1.75\alpha=-1.75 and α=20\alpha=-20. The first value of α\alpha give us one resonance peak for p=1p=1 and no resonances for p=3,5p=3,5. The second value of α\alpha give us a very rich structure of resonances, with number deppending on the value of pp.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Convergence of the critical attractor of dissipative maps: Log-periodic oscillations, fractality and nonextensivity

For a family of logistic-like maps, we investigate the rate of convergence to the critical attractor when an ensemble of initial conditions is uniformly spread over the entire phase space. We found that the phase space volume occupied by the ensemble W(t) depicts a power-law decay with log-periodic oscillations reflecting the multifractal character of the critical attractor. We explore the parametric dependence of the power-law exponent and the amplitude of the log-periodic oscillations with the attractor's fractal dimension governed by the inflexion of the map near its extremal point. Further, we investigate the temporal evolution of W(t) for the circle map whose critical attractor is dense. In this case, we found W(t) to exhibit a rich pattern with a slow logarithmic decay of the lower bounds. These results are discussed in the context of nonextensive Tsallis entropies.Comment: 8 pages and 8 fig

The interrelation between experimental hyperthyroidism andclinical changes was studied in adult intact cats kept under hyperthyroidic state for 42 days. Clinical aspects evaluated were dairy food and water intake, urine output and fecal volume, body weight, temperature, mucous membranes colour, palpable lymphnodes, thyroid gland palpation, abdominal palpation, and cardiac and respiratory frequencies. These characteristics were correlated with free and total T4 and total T3 serum concentrations. Excessive circulant thyroid hormone levels resulted in increased cardiac frequency, polyuria, polidipsia, weight loss and increased fecal volume in the studied cats

Morphological and microstructural characterization of laser-glazedplasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings

Laser glazing has been revealing a high potential for the improvement of plasma-sprayed (PS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by reducing surface roughness, eliminating open porosity on the surface and generating a controlled segmented crack network, although the relationship of the processing parameters with the resultant properties has not yet been completely established. In this investigation, TBCs consisting of atmospheric plasma-sprayed (APS) ZrO2–8wt.%Y2O3 were subjected to a CO2 continuous wave laser-glazing process in order to seal its surface porosity, generating an external dense layer. For that purpose, different amounts of radiation resulting from different scanning speeds were applied to the specimens as well as different track overlapping. Results have shown a significant decrease of the surface roughness after the laser treatment. All specimens presented a fully dense and porous free external layer with a polyfaceted columnar microstructure highly adherent to the plasma-sprayed coating. Controlled surface crack networks, extremely dependent on the laser scanning speed and track overlapping, were achieved for each set of processing parameters. The cracks were found to have a tendency to be oriented in two perpendicular directions, one in the direction of the laser-beam travel direction, the other perpendicular to it. Moreover, the cracks parallel to the beam travel direction are found to be on the overlapping zone, coinciding with the edge of the subsequent track. The cracks are perpendicular to the surface along the densified layer and tend to branch and deviate from the vertical direction below it, within the porous PS coating. XRD results revealed mainly tV nontransformable tetragonal zirconia with a small percentage of residual monoclinic zirconia for the as-sprayed coating. All glazed coatings presented only tV nontransformable tetragonal zirconia with some variations on preferable crystal orientation. Grain sizes varied from 26 to 52 nm, increasing with an increase of laserirradiated energy; microstrain behaved inversely.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - Project POCTI/CTM/44590/2002.União Europeia (UE).
