    As Deloria indicates in the opening lines of his essay, the dominant paradigm of racism in the 1960s reflected the popularly held belief that racism was an individual phenomena. Consequently. if racist individuals were confronted and curtailed or converted, the argument concluded, then discrimination would come to an end. However, history has shown us that we can have racist institutions without having racist individuals. For instance, our education institutions perpetuate racial, as well as sex, inequality.     Social and ethnic differences in moral judgment are examined and a critique of the cognitive-developmental model is presented in this article. In opposition to Piaget and Kohlberg, the thesis advanced here is that morality and moral development are culturally and socially determined constructs. While Piaget postulated the presence of qualitatively distinct stages of moral development to be found in all societies, the position presented here is that the number ofstages, the content of the stages, and the order of the stages varies across cultures. While Kohlberg asserts that morality is located in the psychological structures of the individual, our position is that moral reasoning and behavior is largely determined by such social factors as role demands, class interests, national policies and ethnic antagonisms. Moreover, one cannot be moral in an immoral social role irrespective of childhood socialization, psychological predispositions or commitment to abstract principles

    The United States has a poor record in meeting the mental health needs of its minority populations. By focusing on individual pathology and relying on the white male as norm, practitioners have provided an ethnocentric and ineffective means of treating their culturally diverse clients. No longer can mental health problems be regarded only in terms of disabling mental illnesses and identified psychiatric disorders. They must also embody harm to mental health linked with perpetual poverty and unemployment and the institutionalized discrimination that happens on the basis of race or ethnicity, age, sex, social class, and mental or physical handicap. In its report, the President\u27s Commission on Mental Health indicated that mental health services and programs must focus on the diversity of groups in U.S. society and satisfy the groups in terms of their special needs

    Crystal Growth And Characterization Of Reduced Early Transition Metal Compounds Grown Via Hydrothermal And Molten Flux Methods

    Interest in new and facile ways to prepare early transition metal reduced oxides has recently been increasing. In the past difficult flux techniques involving vacuum furnaces, expensive metal tubing, complicated electrolytic reduction apparatuses, were used to achieve in situ reduction of fully oxidized transition metal precursors. Often times these techniques were coupled with use of a difficult flux, such as boric acid, which is hard to remove due to its insolubility in water at room temperature. These limitations can be circumvented in multiple ways, including carefully choosing a redox neutral flux, using evacuated fused silica tubes for reaction vessels, and employing metallic reducing agents such as powered molybdenum, vanadium, or zinc. Virtually no work has been done outside the realm of flux crystal growth. Nevertheless, the hydrothermal method for crystal growth can be employed to yield hybrid materials containing reduced early transition metals. Through the successful utilization of a two-step hydrothermal method, four oxovanadium(IV) tartrates have been prepared and characterized with three out four having confirmed second harmonic generation activity and one exhibiting spin dimer magnetic behavior. Via a one step hydrothermal method involving an in situ reduction, one oxovanadium(IV) phosphate has been prepared and found to exhibit filled channels in two crystallographic directions. Using the flux method many reduced molybdenum oxides and a related material have been prepared and characterized including the following series: NaxLn1-xMoO4Ln = La, Ce, Pr,Nd, Sm, and Eu; Ln~5Mo3O16 Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd and Sm; and Ln5Mo2O12 Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er. Evidence of direct molybdenum to molybdenum bonding was in the Ln5Mo2O12 series, and all compounds were found to order antiferromagnetically. A related material, La20Mo12O63Cl4, was found to exhibit an optical band gap in the visible region and is the first example of a purely inorganic material that contains molybdenum in a trigonal prismatic coordination environment

    High-resolution, 3D radiative transfer modeling: I. The grand-design spiral galaxy M 51

    International audienceContext. Dust reprocesses about half of the stellar radiation in galaxies. The thermal re-emission by dust of absorbed energy is considered to be driven merely by young stars so is often applied to tracing the star formation rate in galaxies. Recent studies have argued that the old stellar population might be responsible for a non-negligible fraction of the radiative dust heating.Aims. In this work, we aim to analyze the contribution of young (â‰Č100 Myr) and old (~10 Gyr) stellar populations to radiative dust heating processes in the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M 51 using radiative transfer modeling. High-resolution 3D radiative transfer (RT) models are required to describe the complex morphologies of asymmetric spiral arms and clumpy star-forming regions and to model the propagation of light through a dusty medium. Methods. In this paper, we present a new technique developed to model the radiative transfer effects in nearby face-on galaxies. We construct a high-resolution 3D radiative transfer model with the Monte-Carlo code SKIRT to account for the absorption, scattering, and non-local thermal equilibrium (NLTE) emission of dust in M 51. The 3D distribution of stars is derived from the 2D morphology observed in the IRAC 3.6 Όm, GALEX FUV, Hα, and MIPS 24 Όm wavebands, assuming an exponential vertical distribution with an appropriate scale height. The dust geometry is constrained through the far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation, which is derived from the observed total-infrared-to-far-ultraviolet luminosity ratio. The stellar luminosity, star formation rate, and dust mass have been scaled to reproduce the observed stellar spectral energy distribution (SED), FUV attenuation, and infrared SED.Results. The dust emission derived from RT calculations is consistent with far-infrared and submillimeter observations of M 51, implying that the absorbed stellar energy is balanced by the thermal re-emission of dust. The young stars provide 63% of the energy for heating the dust responsible for the total infrared emission (8−1000 Όm), while 37% of the dust emission is governed through heating by the evolved stellar population. In individual wavebands, the contribution from young stars to the dust heating dominates at all infrared wavebands but gradually decreases towards longer infrared and submillimeter wavebands for which the old stellar population becomes a non-negligible source of heating. Upon extrapolation of the results for M 51, we present prescriptions for estimating the contribution of young stars to the global dust heating based on a tight correlation between the dust heating fraction and specific star formation rate

    Myelomatosis with type III hyperlipoproteinemia - clinical and metabolic studies

    We investigated the metabolism of intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL [1.006 to 1.019 g per milliliter]) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL [1.019 to 1.063 g per milliliter]) in two men with Type III hyperlipoproteinemia associated with myelomatosis. In vivo kinetic studies using Radio-labeled autologous lipoproteins demonstrated a greatly reduced fractional catabolic rate of IDL, relative to control values (patients vs. normal, 0.006 and 0.025 per hour vs. 0.20±0.08 per hour [mean ±S.E.M.]) and a greatly prolonged IDL-to-LDL conversion time (45 and 17 hours vs. 5.4±1.6 hours). In studies in vitro, LDL from both patients failed to bind to the LDL receptor of normal blood lymphocytes, whereas LDL from subjects with familial Type III hyperlipoproteinemia bound normally to the receptor. In one patient immunoglobulin was shown to be associated with IDL and LDL. Thus, hyperlipoproteinemia reflected an impaired metabolism of IDL, probably secondary to the binding of immunoglobulin to the lipoproteins. A similar impairment of receptor-mediated LDL catabolism did not elevate the plasma LDL concentration because of the low IDL-to-LDL conversion rate

    The Future of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychopharmacology: A Systematic Review of Phase 2, 3, or 4 Randomized Controlled Trials of Pharmacologic Agents Without Regulatory Approval or for Unapproved Indications

    The pace of development and implementation of novel medications in child and adolescent psychiatry has remained slow. We systematically searched https://clinicaltrials.gov/ and https://www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu/ (from 01/01/2010 to 08/23/2022) for phase 2 or 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of medications without regulatory approval in the US, Europe or Asia. We also included RCTs of dietary interventions/probiotics. Additionally, we searched phase 4 RCTs of agents targeting unlicensed indications for children/adolescents with mental health disorders. We retrieved 234 ongoing or completed RCTs, including 26 (11%) with positive findings on ≄1 primary outcome, 43 (19%) with negative/unavailable results on every primary outcome, and 165 (70%) without publicly available statistical results. The only two compounds with evidence of significant effects that were replicated in ≄1 additional RCT without any negative RCTs were dasotraline for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and carbetocin for hyperphagia in Prader-Willi syndrome. Among other strategies, targeting specific symptom dimensions in samples stratified based on clinical characteristics or established biomarkers may increase chances of success in future development programmes
