Acute Ischemic Stroke in a Pediatric Patient

    Get PDF
Acute ischemic stroke in a pediatric patient is a complex disease with a variety of etiologies that differ from adults. Though rare, they are a real phenomenon with potentially devastating consequences. Some treating institutions are using anti-thrombotic drug therapy with unclear benefits. Available literature, which is limited to case reports and retrospective reviews of databases, clouds this topic with both positive and negative outcomes. Emergency department management should focus on stabilization and resuscitation with immediate involvement of a pediatric neurologist and intensivist. The decision to use anti-thrombotic drug therapy, including anti-platelet drugs and thrombolytics, should be in consult with the specialists involved until randomized controlled trials determine their safety and efficacy in the pediatric population

Modelling the anti-methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) activity of cannabinoids: a QSAR and Docking study

Twenty-four cannabinoids active against MRSA SA1199B and XU212 were optimized at WB97XD/6-31G(d,p), and several molecular descriptors were obtained. Using a multiple linear regression method, several mathematical models with statistical significance were obtained. The robustness of the models was validated, employing the leave-one-out cross-validation and Y-scrambling methods. The entire data set was docked against penicillin-binding protein, iso-tyrosyl tRNA synthetase, and DNA gyrase. The most active cannabinoids had high affinity to penicillin-binding protein (PBP), whereas the least active compounds had low affinities for all of the targets. Among the cannabinoid compounds, Cannabinoid 2 was highlighted due to its suitable combination of both antimicrobial activity and higher scoring values against the selected target; therefore, its docking performance was compared to that of oxacillin, a commercial PBP inhibitor. The 2D figures reveal that both compounds hit the protein in the active site with a similar type of molecular interaction, where the hydroxyl groups in the aromatic ring of cannabinoids play a pivotal role in the biological activity. These results provide some evidence that the anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity of these cannabinoids may be related to the inhibition of the PBP protein; besides, the robustness of the models along with the docking and Quantitative Structure–Activity Relationship (QSAR) results allow the proposal of three new compounds; the predicted activity combined with the scoring values against PBP should encourage future synthesis and experimental testing

Stent-assisted Embolization of a Giant Aneurysm of the Middle Cerebral Artery Using Small and Large Coils (Penumbra Coil 400)

Giant aneurysms have been treated with endovascular approaches like general, balloon-assisted and stentassisted coiling, and flow diverter stent-assisted techniques. Few cases have been reported to be treated with both normal and large coils. Despite the mass effect, an adequate revascularization has been reported. An initial use of these coils is being reported in the current study. This is a case which has been successfully treated using a stent-assisted coiling with both small and large coils i.e., Penumbra Coil 400 (Penumbra, Inc., Alameda, California)

Semiconductor Surface State Engineering for THz Nanodevices

    Get PDF
This chapter is dedicated to study the semiconductor surface states, which combined with nanolithography techniques could result on remarkable properties of advanced nanodevices suitable for terahertz (THz) signal detection or harvesting. The author presents the use of low-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures for the development of the so-called self-switching diodes (SSDs), studying by simulation tool key parameters in detail such as the shape and size of the two-dimensional electron gas system. The impact of the geometry on the working principle of the nanodevice and the effects on current-voltage behavior will be described in order to acquire design guidelines that may improve the performance of the self-switching diodes when applied to low-power square-law rectifiers as well as elements in rectennas by appropriately setting the size of the components

The interaction between three widely used antimalarial drugs chloroquine, primaquine and amodiaquine with acrylamide dimer and trimer as a hydrogel model, were studied by means of density functional theory calculation in both vacuum and water environments, using the functional wb97xd with 6-31++G(d,p) basis set and polarizable continuum model (C-PCM) of solvent. According to binding energy, around −3.15 to −11.91 kJ/mol, the interaction between antimalarial compounds and hydrogel model are exothermic in nature. The extent of interaction found is primaquine > amodiaquine > chloroquine. The natural bond orbital (NBO) calculation and application of second-order perturbation theory show strong charge transfer between the antimalarial and hydrogel model. In addition, the results suggest these interactions are polar in nature, where hydrogen bonds play a principal role in stabilization of the complex. Comparing with the gas-phase, the complexes in the water environment are also stable, with suitable values of Log P (Partition coefficient), and dipolar momentum. Consequently, these results encourage to test acrylamide hydrogels as antimalarial delivery systems

Clasificación internacional del funcionamiento, la discapacidad y certificación de discapacidad en colombia

    Get PDF

The objective of this work was to determine the optimal plot size and the number of replicates for the evaluation of the fresh weight of ryegrass sowed in rows. Seventy uniformity trials were performed with 'Barjumbo' ryegrass, in 16 basic experimental units (BEUs) of 0.51 m2 each. The fresh weight of ryegrass in the BEUs of 18, 18, 6, 6, and 22 uniformity trials was determined, respectively, at 130, 131, 133, 134, and 137 days after sowing. The optimal plot size was determined through the method of the maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation. The number of replicates was determined in scenarios formed by combinations of treatments and differences between means to be detected as significant by Tukey’s test, at 5% probability. The optimal plot size ranged from 1.73 to 3.18 m2, and the variation coefficient in the optimal plot size from 7.58 to 13.96%. The number of replicates varied from 3.95 (~4) to 32.27 (~33), depending on the experimental design, the number of treatments, and the adopted minimum difference. The optimal plot size is 2.29 m2, and, in experiments with up to 50 treatments, eight replicates are required to identify as significant the differences between treatment means of 20.24%.O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho ótimo de parcela e o número de repetições para avaliação da massa de matéria fresca de azevém semeado em filas.
