Spatial rogue waves in photorefractive SBN crystals
We report on the excitation of large-amplitude waves, with a probability of
around 1% of total peaks, on a photorefractive SBN crystal by using a simple
experimental setup at room temperature. We excite the system using a narrow
Gaussian beam and observe different dynamical regimes tailored by the value and
time rate of an applied voltage. We identify two main dynamical regimes: a
caustic one for energy spreading and a speckling one for peak emergence. Our
observations are well described by a two-dimensional Schr\"odinger model with
saturable local nonlinearity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Chemical analysis of NGC 6528: one of the most metal-rich bulge globular cluster
The Bulge Globular Clusters (GCs) are key tracers of this central ancient
component of our Galaxy. It is essential to understand their formation and
evolution to study that of the bulge, as well as their relationship with the
other Galactic GC systems (halo and disk GCs). Our main goals are to obtain
detailed abundances for a sample of seven red giant members of NGC 6528 in
order to characterize its chemical composition and study the relationship of
this GC with the bulge, and with other bulge, halo and disk GCs. Moreover, we
analyze this clusters behavior associated with the Multiple Populations
(MPs) phenomenon. We obtained the stellar parameters and chemical abundances of
light elements (Na, Al), iron-peak elements (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu),
{\alpha}-elements (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and heavy elements (Zr, Ba, Eu) in seven
red giant members of NGC 6528 using high resolution spectroscopy from
FLAMES-UVES. We obtained in six stars of our sample a mean iron content of
[Fe/H]=-0.14+/-0.03 dex, in good agreement with other studies. We found no
significant internal iron spread. We detected one candidate variable star,
which was excluded from the mean in iron content, we derived a metallicity in
this star of [Fe/H]=-0.55+/-0.04 dex. Moreover, we found no extended O-Na
anticorrelation but instead only an intrinsic Na spread. In addition, NGC 6528
does not exhibit a Mg-Al anticorrelation, and no significant spread in either
Mg or Al. The {\alpha} and iron-peak elements show good agreement with the
bulge field star trend. The heavy elements are slightly dominated by the
r-process. The chemical analysis suggests an origin and evolution similar to
that of typical old Bulge field stars. Finally, we find remarkable agreement in
the chemical patterns of NGC 6528 and another bulge GC, NGC 6553, suggesting a
similar origin and evolution.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 12 pages, 13 figures, 4 table
Integration of occupational risk prevention courses in engineering degrees: Delphi study
Engineering syllabi often lack courses covering occupational risk prevention. In Spain, professional competences are awarded along with the completion of a university degree. This means that new graduates are certified in areas in which they have received little or no training, such as occupational risk prevention. However, the academic reforms established by the Bologna Process, which strives to homogenize university degrees throughout Europe, compels European universities to design new syllabi. The main goal of this paper is to define a framework for including occupational risk-prevention education in the new engineering syllabi. This exploratory research applied the Delphi methodology to a panel of 59 experts, using questionnaires assessed with a four-point Likert scale through two rounds. A website supported the information flow. According to the experts who participated in this study, education and training in occupational risk-prevention is essential for improving the safety culture within a company or workplace. The experts concurred that this subject should be a separate mandatory course in all engineering degree programs. The participants recommended that an optional course should be considered only if a mandatory course is not approved. It was also deemed desirable to integrate occupational risk prevention as a cross-field subject in other technological courses, even if the curriculum already includes some related courses. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.Cortés Díaz, JM.; Pellicer Armiñana, E.; Catalá Alís, J. Special Geometry of Euclidean Supersymmetry III: the local r-map, instantons and black holes
We define and study projective special para-Kahler manifolds and show that
they appear as target manifolds when reducing five-dimensional vector
multiplets coupled to supergravity with respect to time. The dimensional
reductions with respect to time and space are carried out in a uniform way
using an epsilon-complex notation. We explain the relation of our formalism to
other formalisms of special geometry used in the literature. In the second part
of the paper we investigate instanton solutions and their dimensional lifting
to black holes. We show that the instanton action, which can be defined after
dualising axions into tensor fields, agrees with the ADM mass of the
corresponding black hole. The relation between actions via Wick rotation, Hodge
dualisation and analytic continuation of axions is discussed.Comment: 72 pages, 2 figure
The effects of superior ovarian nerve sectioning on ovulation in the guinea pig
The effects on spontaneous ovulation associated with the unilateral or bilateral sectioning of the superior ovarian nerves (SON) were analyzed in guinea pigs at different time intervals of the estrous cycle. Day 1 of the estrous cycle was defined as the day when the animal presents complete loss of the vaginal membrane (open vagina). Subsequent phases of the cycle were determined by counting the days after Day 1. All animals were autopsied on the fifth day of the estrous cycle after surgery. Sectioning the right, left, or both SONs on day 5 (early luteal phase) resulted in a significant increase in the number of fresh corpora lutea. Ovulation increased significantly when the left SON (L-SON) was sectioned during late follicular phase (day 1) and medium luteal phase (day 8). When surgery was performed on days 1 or 8, neither sectioning the right SON (R-SON) nor sectioning the SON bilaterally had an apparent effect on ovulation rates. Similarly, ovulation rates were not affected when unilateral (right or left) or bilateral sectioning of the SON was performed during late luteal phase two (day 12). Unilateral or bilateral sectioning of the SON performed during the early luteal phase (day 5) was associated with a significant decrease in uterine weight. A comparable effect was observed when the L-SON was sectioned during late follicular phase (day 1), or medium luteal phase (day 8). No effects on uterine weight were observed when unilateral or bilateral sectioning of the SON was performed during late luteal phase. Our results suggest that in the guinea pig the SON modulates ovulation, and that the degree of modulation varies along the estrous cycle. The strongest influence of the SONs on ovulation occurs during early luteal phase, and decrease thereafter, being absent by late luteal phase. In addition, sectioning the left or the right SON caused different responses by the ovaries of adult guinea pigs. This paper discusses the mechanisms by which ovulation increased when the SON was surgically cut
Decoupling of defect and short-range order contributions to resistivity recovery measurements in binary alloys
© 2014 American Physical Society. We report a new and improved approach that uses low-temperature resistivity recovery measurements to study the defect kinetics in metallic binary alloys. This method is able to decouple the effect related to the irradiation defect contribution to the resistivity from that of the short-range order, which is enhanced by the free migration of defects. This approach can provide reliable experimental data which are more suitable for comparisons with current computational models. Furthermore, the difference in this method with respect to the classical one is that our method gives information concerning the role of vacancies and interstitials on short-range order. The method is applied to a model alloy Fe-5%Cr, of interest for fusion applications, where short-range order effects have been previously found to play a role.Peer Reviewe
A Quality-Aware Approach to Web Services Procurement
Web services bring programmers a new way to develop advanced applications
able to integrate any group of services on the Internet into a single
solution. Web services procurement (WSP) is focussed on the acquisition of web
services, including some complex tasks such as the specification of demands, the
search for available offers, and the best choice selection. Although the technology
to support them already exists, there are only a few approaches wherein qualityof-
service in demands and offers is taken into account, in addition to functionality.
In this paper, we present some implementation issues on a quality-aware
approach to WSP, whose solution is mainly based on using mathematical constraints
to define quality-of-service in demands and offers.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2000-1106-C02-01Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología FIT-150100-2001-78Junta de Comunidades de Castilla La Mancha PCB-02-00
Off-shell N=2 tensor supermultiplets
A multiplet calculus is presented for an arbitrary number n of N=2 tensor
supermultiplets. For rigid supersymmetry the known couplings are reproduced. In
the superconformal case the target spaces parametrized by the scalar fields are
cones over (3n-1)-dimensional spaces encoded in homogeneous SU(2) invariant
potentials, subject to certain constraints. The coupling to conformal
supergravity enables the derivation of a large class of supergravity
Lagrangians with vector and tensor multiplets and hypermultiplets. Dualizing
the tensor fields into scalars leads to hypermultiplets with hyperkahler or
quaternion-Kahler target spaces with at least n abelian isometries. It is
demonstrated how to use the calculus for the construction of Lagrangians
containing higher-derivative couplings of tensor multiplets. For the
application of the c-map between vector and tensor supermultiplets to
Lagrangians with higher-order derivatives, an off-shell version of this map is
proposed. Various other implications of the results are discussed. As an
example an elegant derivation of the classification of 4-dimensional
quaternion-Kahler manifolds with two commuting isometries is given.Comment: 36 page
Stellar parameters for stars of the CoRoT exoplanet field
Aims:To support the computation and evolutionary interpretation of periods
associated with the rotational modulation, oscillations, and variability of
stars located in the CoRoT fields, we are conducting a spectroscopic survey for
stars located in the fields already observed by the satellite. These
observations allow us to compute physical and chemical parameters for our
stellar sample. Method: Using spectroscopic observations obtained with UVES/VLT
and Hydra/Blanco, and based on standard analysis techniques, we computed
physical and chemical parameters (, , ,
, , , and ) for a large
sample of CoRoT targets. Results: We provide physical and chemical parameters
for a sample comprised of 138 CoRoT targets. Our analysis shows the stars in
our sample are located in different evolutionary stages, ranging from the main
sequence to the red giant branch, and range in spectral type from F to K. The
physical and chemical properties for the stellar sample are in agreement with
typical values reported for FGK stars. However, we report three stars
presenting abnormal lithium behavior in the CoRoT fields. These parameters
allow us to properly characterize the intrinsic properties of the stars in
these fields. Our results reveal important differences in the distributions of
metallicity, , and evolutionary status for stars belonging to
different CoRoT fields, in agreement with results obtained independently from
ground-based photometric surveys. Conclusions: Our spectroscopic catalog, by
providing much-needed spectroscopic information for a large sample of CoRoT
targets, will be of key importance for the successful accomplishment of several
different programs related to the CoRoT mission, thus it will help further
boost the scientific return associated with this space mission.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&
