    In this paper we extend the concept of separatrix reconnection into chaotic regimes.     A First-Principles Approach to Insulators in Finite Electric Fields

    We describe a method for computing the response of an insulator to a static, homogeneous electric field. It consists of iteratively minimizing an electric enthalpy functional expressed in terms of occupied Bloch-like states on a uniform grid of k points. The functional has equivalent local minima below a critical field E_c that depends inversely on the density of k points; the disappearance of the minima at E_c signals the onset of Zener breakdown. We illustrate the procedure by computing the piezoelectric and nonlinear dielectric susceptibility tensors of III-V semiconductors.Comment: 4 pages, with 1 postscript figure embedded.     Spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric constants of III-V nitrides

    The spontaneous polarization, dynamical Born charges, and piezoelectric constants of the III-V nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN are studied ab initio using the Berry phase approach to polarization in solids. The piezoelectric constants are found to be up 10 times larger than in conventional III-V's and II-VI's, and comparable to those of ZnO. Further properties at variance with those of conventional III-V compounds are the sign of the piezoelectric constants (positive as in II-VI's) and the very large spontaneous polarization.Comment: RevTeX 4 pages, improved upon revie

    Design of a low band gap oxide ferroelectric: Bi6_6Ti4_4O17_{17}

    A strategy for obtaining low band gap oxide ferroelectrics based on charge imbalance is described and illustrated by first principles studies of the hypothetical compound Bi6_6Ti4_4O17_{17}, which is an alternate stacking of the ferroelectric Bi4_4Ti3_3O12_{12}. We find that this compound is ferroelectric, similar to Bi4_4Ti3_3O12_{12} although with a reduced polarization. Importantly, calculations of the electronic structure with the recently developed functional of Tran and Blaha yield a much reduced band gap of 1.83 eV for this material compared to Bi4_4Ti3_3O12_{12}. Therefore, Bi6_6Ti4_4O17_{17} is predicted to be a low band gap ferroelectric material

    Endograft infection is a rare event, with few reports in the literature. This report describes delayed infection of an aortic endoprosthesis that eventually resulted in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture. The procedure was performed in an angiographic suite. In the postoperative period the patient developed a central venous line infection. This appears to be the first recognized and reported case in which the infected aortic neck completely dilated due to the radial force of the stent graft

    Purpose The prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) is poor, and the molecular pathogenesis players are vastly unknown. Surgery remains the primary option in GC treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of somatic CDH1 alterations in prognosis and survival of patients with GC. Patients and Methods A series of patients with sporadic and familial GC (diffuse and intestinal; n _ 246) were analyzed for somatic CDH1 mutations, promoter hypermethylation, and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) by polymerase chain reaction sequencing. E-cadherin protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. Associations between molecular, clinicopathologic, and survival data were analyzed. Results CDH1 somatic alterations were found in approximately 30% of all patients with GC. Both histologic types of sporadic GC displayed LOH in 7.5%, mutations in 1.7%, and hypermethylation in 18.4% of patients. Primary tumors from hereditary diffuse GC, lacking germline CDH1 alterations, showed exclusively CDH1 promoter hypermethylation in 50% of patients. Familial intestinal GC (FIGC) tumors showed LOH in 9.4% and hypermethylation in 17.0%. CDH1 alterations did not associate with a particular pattern of E-cadherin expression. Importantly, the worst patient survival rate among all GCs analyzed was seen in patients with tumors carrying CDH1 structural alterations, preferentially those belonging to FIGC families. Conclusion CDH1 somatic alterations exist in all clinical settings and histotypes of GC and associate with different survival rates.     Enhancement of piezoelectricity in a mixed ferroelectric

    We use first-principles density-functional total energy and polarization calculations to calculate the piezoelectric tensor at zero temperature for both cubic and simple tetragonal ordered supercells of Pb_3GeTe_4. The largest piezoelectric coefficient for the tetragonal configuration is enhanced by a factor of about three with respect to that of the cubic configuration. This can be attributed to both the larger strain-induced motion of cations relative to anions and higher Born effective charges in the tetragonal case. A normal mode decomposition shows that both cation ordering and local relaxation weaken the ferroelectric instability, enhancing piezoelectricity.Comment: 5 pages, revtex, 2 eps figure
