BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological condition causing multiple motor and non-motor symptoms that have a serious adverse effect on quality of life. Management is problematic due to the variable and fluctuating nature of symptoms, often hourly and daily. The PD_Manager mHealth platform aims to provide a continuous feed of data on symptoms to improve clinical understanding of the status of any individual patient and inform care planning. The objectives of this trial are to (1) assess patient (and family carer) perspectives of PD_Manager regarding comfort, acceptability and ease of use; (2) assess clinician views about the utility of the data generated by PD_Manager for clinical decision making and the acceptability of the system in clinical practice. METHODS/DESIGN: This trial is an unblinded, parallel, two-group, randomised controlled pilot study. A total of 200 persons with Parkinson's disease (Hoehn and Yahr stage 3, experiencing motor fluctuations at least 2 h per day), with primary family carers, in three countries (110 Rome, 50 Venice, Italy; 20 each in Ioannina, Greece and Surrey, England) will be recruited. Following informed consent, baseline information will be gathered, including the following: age, gender, education, attitudes to technology (patient and carer); time since Parkinson's diagnosis, symptom status and comorbidities (patient only). Randomisation will assign participants (1:1 in each country), to PD_Manager vs control, stratifying by age (1 ≤ 70 : 1 > 70) and gender (60% M: 40% F). The PD_Manager system captures continuous data on motor symptoms, sleep, activity, speech quality and emotional state using wearable devices (wristband, insoles) and a smartphone (with apps) for storing and transmitting the information. Control group participants will be asked to keep a symptom diary covering the same elements as PD_Manager records. After a minimum of two weeks, each participant will attend a consultation with a specialist doctor for review of the data gathered (by either means), and changes to management will be initiated as indicated. Patients, carers and clinicians will be asked for feedback on the acceptability and utility of the data collection methods. The PD_Manager intervention, compared to a symptom diary, will be evaluated in a cost-consequences framework. DISCUSSION: Information gathered will inform further development of the PD_Manager system and a larger effectiveness trial. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN Registry, ISRCTN17396879 .

Abstract The notion of interdisciplinarity, covering a network of hyphened words prefixed by multi, pluri, inter, cross, trans, whose mutual frontiers are far from clear, acquired recently a new relevance giving rise to a prolific literature and frequent scientific metings. The controversies and debates about this issue are mainly focused on the complex relationship amongst scientific disciplines enhanced by the ever growing feeling that scientific production is no longer limited to the traditional image of self-contained disciplines

Latin europe cluster: from South to North

    No full text
The Latin europe cluster consists of Spain, Portugal, Italy, French Switzerland, France, and Israel. The cluster has a total population of over 170 million and has a gross National income of close to U.S.$3.5 trillion. The cluster scores close to mid-range on all the dimensions of societal practices except power distance, where it has a high cluster average of over 5. The cluster's values are particularly high on performance orientation, perhaps reflecting the participating managers' understanding of the implications of global competition. The key strategic dilemma for these societies seems to be how to balance the need for competitiveness with their traditional preference for a paternalistic and interventionist government.

Examining a set of data published and debated in the last decades about the Portuguese higher education system, the present chapter presents a brief framework of the main changes in university governance, evaluation of quality and accreditation of courses and research, system financing, internationalization, ranks and competition and attraction of foreign students, professors and researchers. At present new paradigms emerge in public policies in the field of research and higher education inspired by the Triple Helix of university–industry–government relations clearly breaking the traditional boundaries and bringing new challenges to universities. Portugal has a distinctive history and structure to its higher education system, compared with other Europeans countries. The higher education system in Portugal is binary, comprising university institutions and polytechnic institutions, which can be public or private. The number of higher education institutions expanded rapidly in the eighties and early nineties as a response to an increase in student enrollment. Quality assurance of higher education in Portugal known as “the contractual system” was approved by the Parliament in November 1994. In 2006, after a review of the higher education (HE) system by the OECD a new legal framework came into force. Significant changes were introduced in the internal system of governance of Higher Education Institutions (HEI), as well as in their external societal relations (including, internationalization, research partnerships, and business links, as well as external evaluation and accountability)

How happiness mediates the organizational virtuousness and affective commitment relationship

Recent moral and financial collapse of high profile organizations around the world led the business community, the popular and business press, and researchers to rediscover the worthiness of organizations' virtues. Aiming to contribute to this momentum, this empirical study investigates how perceptions of organizational virtuousness (OV) predict affective well-being (AWB) and affective commitment (AC). Two hundred five individuals participate. The findings show that perceptions of OV predict AC both directly and through the mediating role of AWB. The study suggests that fostering organizational virtuousness (e.g., through honesty, interpersonal respect, and compassion; combining high standards of performance with a culture of forgiveness and learning from mistakes) improves employees' AWB and promotes a more committed workforce. Considering these findings and mirroring the growing contributions of the positive psychology, positive organizational behavior, and positive organizational scholarship movements, the study suggests that a "positive-people-management" perspective should be considered, both by practitioners and scholars.Affective well-being Happiness Affective commitment Organizational virtuousness Psychological climate Positive-people-management perspective
