Catalysts containing n-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands: properties, syntheses, applications and comparison with other catalysts
N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become of considerable importance in modern organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. There are several advantages in the use NHCs over their phosphorus analogues, which explains the enormous development of NHC ligands in the field of organometallic catalysis in the past few years. In this article, we present an overview of the importance of the catalysts containing NHC ligands, their synthesis, some pertinent synthetic applications, and a brief comparison with other catalysts.872884Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES
The challenge of C-H activation in organic synthesis
This review aims at to the presentation and discussion of the principal aspects of the C-H activation by transition metals. Representative examples were selected from the recent literature to illustrate these principles beginning with somewhat simple examples and moving up to more complex ones. The synthetic potential of the C-H activation, as well as the potential advantages and disadvantages of the methodology are highlighted with relevant recent examples, along with brief insights on the mechanism aspects of these reactions.1779179

Simulated moving bed chromatography in the production of enantiomerically pure or enriched compounds in large scale
There is great interest nowadays in the use of preparative liquid chromatography as an effective tool for the production of enantiomerically pure, or enriched, compounds for the pharmaceutical industry. To make the chromatographic process economically attractive, attention is now focused on the choice of the chromatographic operating mode to minimize eluent consumption and to maximize productivity. Among the alternatives to the traditional batch chromatography, attention is now shifting towards simulated moving bed (SMB) technologies and a review covering the latest developments in this area seems timely. Several aspects of this important analytical technique are presented and details concerning the SMB technology for process optimization are outlined.10271037Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
SARS-CoV-2 introductions and early dynamics of the epidemic in Portugal
Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by
the National Institute of Health in the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, in collaboration
with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide.
Methods By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration of individual-based
travel history, we reconstructed and characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of SARSCoV-2 introductions and early dissemination in Portugal.
Results We detected at least 277 independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions, mostly from
European countries (namely the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland),
which were consistent with the countries with the highest connectivity with Portugal.
Although most introductions were estimated to have occurred during early March 2020, it is
likely that SARS-CoV-2 was silently circulating in Portugal throughout February, before the
first cases were confirmed.
Conclusions Here we conclude that the earlier implementation of measures could have
minimized the number of introductions and subsequent virus expansion in Portugal. This
study lays the foundation for genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal, and highlights the need for systematic and geographically-representative genomic surveillance. We gratefully acknowledge to Sara Hill and Nuno Faria (University of Oxford) and

Efficient Heck Arylations Of Cyclic And Acyclic Acrylate Derivatives Using Arenediazonium Tetrafluoroborates. A New Synthesis Of The Antidepressant Drug (+/-)-paroxetine.
[reaction: see text] The Heck arylation of acyclic- and cyclic-substituted acrylates using several arenediazonium tetrafluoroborates was investigated. Arylations were carried out under aerobic, ligand-free conditions to provide the corresponding substituted acrylates in moderate to high isolated yields. Heck arylations were usually completed in less than 2 h in refluxing methanol. The aza-endocyclic acrylate derivative 11a was converted into the antidepressant drug (+/-)-paroxetine in a concise new route in good overall yield.81657-6
