Hematology is an important pathological and diagnostic tool. This paper describes the hematological parameters of 76 specimens of Hoplias malabaricus infested with monogenean parasites, which were collected from two lagoons. The hematological parameters included: erythrocyte count (Er), microhematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The blood parameters showed no significant changes associated with the infestation. Water temperature was found to be negatively correlated with MCV and Hct, with values of rs= -0.52, p<0.0001 and rs= -0.48, p<0.0001, respectively. The mean Relative Condition Factor was Kn=1.01, indicating good health conditions of the fish in these lagoons. No correlation was found between the monogenean infestation and the blood parameters, or between the environmental factors and the monogeneans.224457462Ballarin, L., Dall'Oro, M., Bertotto, D., Libertini, A., Francescon, A., Barbaro, A., Haematological parameters in Umbrina cirrosa (Teleostei, Sciaenidae): A comparison between diploid and triploid specimens (2004) Comp Biochem Physiol a Mol Integr Physiol, 138 (1), pp. 45-51. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cbpb.2004.02.019, PMid:15165570Bolger, T., Connolly, P.L., The selection of suitable indices for the measurement and analysis of fish condition (1989) J Fish Biol, 34 (2), pp. 171-182. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1095-8649.1989.tb03300.xBush, A.O., Lafferty, K.D., Lotz, J.M., Shostak, A.W., Parasitology meets ecology on its own terms (1997) J Parasitol, 83 (4), pp. 575-583. , http://dx.doi.org/10.2307/3284227, PMid:9267395: Margolis et al. revisitedCorrêa, L.L., Karling, L.C., Takemoto, R.M., Ceccarelli, P.S., Ueta, M.T., Hematological alterations caused by high intensity of L3 larvae of Contracaecum sp Railliet &ampHenry, 1912 (Nematoda, Anisakidae) in the stomach of Hoplias malabaricus in lakes in Pirassununga, São Paulo (2013) Parasitol Res, 112 (8), pp. 2783-2789. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00436-013-3446-8, PMid:23666228Collier, H.B., The standardization of blood haemoglobin determinations (1944) Can Med Assoc J, 50 (6), pp. 550-552. , PMid:20323122 PMCid:PMC1581573Dacie, J.V., Lewis, S.M., (2007) Practical Haematology, , 7th ed. Temporal Changes in Technical and Physical Performances During a Small-Sided Game in Elite Youth Soccer Players

Background: There have been claims that small-sided games (SSG) may generate an appropriate environment to develop youth players’ technical performance associated to game-related problem solving. However, the temporal change in technical performance parameters of youth players during SSG is still unknown.. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine temporal changes in technical and physical performances during a small-sided game (SSG) in elite soccer players.. Methods: Sixty elite youth players (age 14.8 ± 0.2 yr; stature 177 ± 5 cm; body mass 66.2 ± 4.7 kg) completed a 5 v 5 SSG using two repetitions of 8 minutes interspersed by 3 minutes of passive recovery. To evaluate temporal changes in performance, the data were analysed across 4 minutes quarters. Physical performance parameters included the total distance covered (TDC), the frequency of sprints (>18 km•h-1), accelerations and decelerations (> 2.0 m•s-2 and - 2.0 m•s-2), metabolic power (W•kg-1), training impulse (TRIMP), TDC: TRIMP, number of impacts, and body load. Technical performance parameters included goal attempts, total number of tackles, tackles and interceptions, total number of passes, and passes effectiveness.. Results: All physical performance parameters decreased from the first to the last quarter with notable declines in TDC, metabolic power and the frequency of sprints, accelerations and decelerations (P 0.05; trivial ES for 1st v 4th quarters: 0.15 - 0.33).. Conclusions: The data demonstrate that technical performance is maintained despite substantial declines in physical performance during a SSG in elite youth players. This finding may have implications for designing SSG’s for elite youth players to ensure physical, technical and tactical capabilities are optimized. Modifications in player number, pitch dimensions, rules, coach encouragement, for instance, should be included taking into account the main aim of a given session and then focused on overloading physical or technical elements.

    NeuroSpeech

    Get PDF
NeuroSpeech is a software for modeling pathological speech signals considering different speech dimensions: phonation, articulation, prosody, and intelligibility. Although it was developed to model dysarthric speech signals from Parkinson's patients, its structure allows other computer scientists or developers to include other pathologies and/or measures. Different tasks can be performed: (1) modeling of the signals considering the aforementioned speech dimensions, (2) automatic discrimination of Parkinson's vs. non-Parkinson's, and (3) prediction of the neurological state according to the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score. The prediction of the dysarthria level according to the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment scale is also provided

Multi-view representation learning via gcca for multimodal analysis of Parkinson's disease

    Get PDF
Information from different bio-signals such as speech, handwriting, and gait have been used to monitor the state of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, however, all the multimodal bio-signals may not always be available. We propose a method based on multi-view representation learning via generalized canonical correlation analysis (GCCA) for learning a representation of features extracted from handwriting and gait that can be used as a complement to speech-based features. Three different problems are addressed: classification of PD patients vs. healthy controls, prediction of the neurological state of PD patients according to the UPDRS score, and the prediction of a modified version of the Frenchay dysarthria assessment (m-FDA). According to the results, the proposed approach is suitable to improve the results in the addressed problems, specially in the prediction of the UPDRS, and m-FDA scores

Analyzing and Modeling Real-World Phenomena with Complex Networks: A Survey of Applications

    Get PDF
The success of new scientific areas can be assessed by their potential for contributing to new theoretical approaches and in applications to real-world problems. Complex networks have fared extremely well in both of these aspects, with their sound theoretical basis developed over the years and with a variety of applications. In this survey, we analyze the applications of complex networks to real-world problems and data, with emphasis in representation, analysis and modeling, after an introduction to the main concepts and models. A diversity of phenomena are surveyed, which may be classified into no less than 22 areas, providing a clear indication of the impact of the field of complex networks.Comment: 103 pages, 3 figures and 7 tables.
