The regional distribution of unemployment: What do micro-data tell us?

Regional disparities in unemployment rates are large and persistent. The literature provides evidence of their magnitude and evolution, as well as evidence of the role of certain economic, demographic and environmental factors in explaining the gap between regions of low and high unemployment. Most of these studies, however, adopt an aggregate approach and so do not account for the individual characteristics of the unemployed and employed in each region. This paper, by drawing on micro-data from the Spanish wave of the Labour Force Survey, seeks to remedy this shortcoming by analysing regional differentials in unemployment rates. An appropriate decomposition of the regional gap in the average probability of being unemployed enables us to distinguish between the contribution of differences in the regional distribution of individual characteristics from that attributable to a different impact of these characteristics on the probability of unemployment. Our results suggest that the well-documented disparities in regional unemployment are not just the result of regional heterogeneity in the distribution of individual characteristics. Non-negligible differences in the probability of unemployment remain after controlling for this type of heterogeneity, as a result of differences across regions in the impact of the observed characteristics. Among the factors considered in our analysis, regional differences in the endowment and impact of an individual's education are shown to play a major role

Human capital and regional wage gaps

This paper uses micro-level data to analyse the effect of human capital on regional wage differentials. The results for the set of Spanish regions confirm that they differ in the endowment of human capital, but also that the return that individuals obtain from it varies sharply across regions. Regional heterogeneity in returns is especially intense in the case of education, particularly when considering its effect on the employability of individuals. These differences in endowment and, especially, in returns to human capital, account for a significant proportion of regional wage gaps.

Influence of infill and nozzle diameter on porosity of FDM printed parts with rectilinear grid pattern

The aim of the paper is to analyze the effect of nozzle diameter and infill on porosity and pore size of FDM printed specimens with rectilinear grid pattern. Two different nozzle diameters (0.2 and 0.4 mm), as well as four different infill values (20 %, 40 %, 60 % and 80 %) were used. Experimental results for pore size agree with theoretical results. On the contrary, low experimental porosity was obtained, especially for high infill values, because printed samples show fewer pores than expected. The higher infill, the lower porosity and pore size. Higher nozzle diameter implies higher pore size but similar porosity.Postprint (published version

Firm exports, innovation, … and regions

This paper uses firm-level data for each of the Spanish NUTS2 regions to estimate the effect of product and process innovations on firm’s export performance. It shows that the firm’s propensity to innovate and its export activity vary substantially across regions. Remarkably, results prove that the effect of innovation on exports is far from regionally uniform. The gap in the propensity to export between innovative and non-innovative firms, conditional to other sources of firm heterogeneity, is shown to be particularly wide in regions with high extensive margin of exports. However, differences in the propensity to innovate do not originate regional disparities in the share of sales abroad by exporting firms. Consequently, stimulate firm’s innovation in the less innovative regions can be an effective tool to increase the share of exporting firms

Innovation, heterogeneous firms, and the region [WP]

This paper investigates the role of regional determinants on innovation performance controlling by the firm’s absorptive capacity and other sources of firm heterogeneity. The findings for a sample of firms in Spain support the hypothesis that regional determinants matter, though their role is subtler than the one frequently assumed. Rather than a direct influence on firm’s innovation, the regional context moderates the effect of internal determinants. In the case of product innovation the most important mechanism of interaction seems to be operating through cooperation in innovation, whereas for process innovation it seems to be through highly skilled labou

Innovation, heterogeneous firms and the region: evidence from Spain

This paper investigates the role of regional factors in innovation performance, controlling for firms' absorptive capacity and other sources of firm heterogeneity. The findings for a sample of firms in Spain support the hypothesis that regional determinants matter, though their role is subtler than is frequently assumed. Rather than exerting a direct influence on firms' innovation, the regional context moderates the effect of internal determinants, particularly of the firms' absorptive capacity. The results indicate that the type of relevant interactions differs for product and process innovation and that they only operate for small and medium-sized enterprises, being negligible for large firms
