    El cooperativismo en Paraguay: especial referencia a las cooperativas de producción

    The aim of this paper is to study the evolution of Paraguayan cooperativism, its current situation, the legal framework in which it is developed, its geographic distribution and the role of production co-operative societies. At present, the co-operative sector accomplishes an outstanding task in the national socio-economic field. In 1997, this sector contributed to the Gross National Product at around 14%, besides canalizing about 30% of population savings. These figures show its importance and the opportunity of its study. The pioneer co-operative societies, of agribusiness character, were set up in the 1940s and formed by immigrant groups with previous experience in this type of associationism. However, since 1989 the real increase of co-operative societies number has taken place, mainly in financial and production sectors. In the decade of 90s, financial co-operative societies have shown an unprecedented rise in the number of members, grouping now nearly 60% of the whole co-operative membership in the country, in comparison with almost 36% corresponding to production co-operatives. With regard to the number of companies, between 1982 and 1995 the setting up of financial co-operative societies was multiplied by five, whereas the production ones have increased nine times in the same period. Around 57% and 24% of the whole number of co-operatives are of the latter and former group mentioned, respectively.     Neural Prediction of Communication-Relevant Outcomes

    Understanding and predicting the mechanisms and consequences of effective communication may be greatly advanced by leveraging knowledge from social and cognitive neuroscience research. We build on prior brain research that mapped mental processes, and show that information gained from neuroimaging can predict variation in communication outcomes over and above that associated with self-report. We further discuss how neural measures can complement physiological and other implicit measures. The brain-as-predictor approach can (1) allow researchers to predict individual and population level outcomes of exposure to communication stimuli with greater accuracy and (2) provide a better understanding of the mental processes underlying behaviors relevant to communication research. In this article, we give a detailed description of the brain-as-predictor approach and provide a guide for scholars interested in employing it in their research. We then discuss how the brain-as-predictor approach can be used to provide theoretical insights in communication research. Given its potential for advancing theory and practice, we argue that the brain-as-predictor approach can serve as a valuable addition to the communication science toolbox and provide a brief checklist for authors, reviewers and editors interested in using the approach

    In silico ischaemia-induced reentry at the Purkinjeventricle interface

    This computational modelling work illustrates the influence of hyperkalaemia and electrical uncoupling induced by defined ischaemia on action potential (AP) propagation and the incidence of reentry at the Purkinjeventricle interface in mammalian hearts. Unidimensional and bidimensional models of the Purkinjeventricle subsystem, including ischaemic conditions (defined as phase 1B) in the ventricle and an ischaemic border zone, were developed by altering several important electrophysiological parameters of the LuoRudy AP model of the ventricular myocyte. Purkinje electrical activity was modelled using the equations of DiFrancesco and Noble. Our study suggests that an extracellular potassium concentration [K](o) 14 mM and a slight decrease in intercellular coupling induced by ischaemia in ventricle can cause conduction block from Purkinje to ventricle. Under these conditions, propagation from ventricle to Purkinje is possible. Thus, unidirectional block (UDB) and reentry can result. When conditions of UDB are met, retrograde propagation with a long delay (320 ms) may re-excite Purkinje cells, and give rise to a reentrant pathway. This induced reentry may be the origin of arrhythmias observed in phase 1B ischaemia. In a defined setting of ischaemia (phase 1B), a small amount of uncoupling between ventricular cells, as well as between Purkinje and ventricular tissue, may induce UDBs and reentry.     Red de evaluación de cultivares de soja para el Noroeste Argentino: resultados de la campaña 2013/2014

    La Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC) nuevamente coordinó el desarrollo y evaluación de la Red de Evaluación de Cultivares de Soja para el Noroeste Argentino (NOA). Como en campañas anteriores, el Programa Granos de la EEAOC fue el responsable de coordinar los ensayos que, desde hace 17 campañas agrícolas, se vienen realizando ininterrumpidamente. El objetivo de esta red es evaluar el comportamiento agronómico de las variedades de soja que se encuentran disponibles comercialmente. La información que se obtiene resulta de utilidad para los productores de la región, constituyendo además una importante herramienta para la elección de los materiales a implantar en la siguiente campaña agrícola. Es necesario destacar la colaboración y el aporte que realizan productores, asesores, empresas privadas y técnicos del medio.     Variable order Mittag-Leffler fractional operators on isolated time scales and application to the calculus of variations

This allows a general formulation of a class of fractional variational problems involving variable-order difference operators.     Accuracy of diabetes screening methods used for people with tuberculosis, Indonesia, Peru, Romania, South Africa

    Objective To evaluate the performance of diagnostic tools for diabetes mellitus, including laboratory methods and clinical risk scores, in newly-diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis patients from four middle-income countries. Methods In a multicentre, prospective study, we recruited 2185 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis from sites in Indonesia, Peru, Romania and South Africa from January 2014 to September 2016. Using laboratory-measured glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) as the gold standard, we measured the diagnostic accuracy of random plasma glucose, point-of-care HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, urine dipstick, published and newly derived diabetes mellitus risk scores and anthropometric measurements. We also analysed combinations of tests, including a two-step test using point-of-care HbA1cwhen initial random plasma glucose was ≥ 6.1 mmol/L. Findings The overall crude prevalence of diabetes mellitus among newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients was 283/2185 (13.0%; 95% confidence interval, CI: 11.6–14.4). The marker with the best diagnostic accuracy was point-of-care HbA1c (area under receiver operating characteristic curve: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.75–0.86). A risk score derived using age, point-of-care HbA1c and random plasma glucose had the best overall diagnostic accuracy (area under curve: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.81–0.90). There was substantial heterogeneity between sites for all markers, but the two-step combination test performed well in Indonesia and Peru. Conclusion Random plasma glucose followed by point-of-care HbA1c testing can accurately diagnose diabetes in tuberculosis patients, particularly those with substantial hyperglycaemia, while reducing the need for more expensive point-of-care HbA1c testing. Risk scores with or without biochemical data may be useful but require validation

    Evidence of suppression of onchocerciasis transmission in the Venezuelan Amazonian focus.

    BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has set goals for onchocerciasis elimination in Latin America by 2015. Most of the six previously endemic countries are attaining this goal by implementing twice a year (and in some foci, quarterly) mass ivermectin (Mectizan®) distribution. Elimination of transmission has been verified in Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. Challenges remain in the Amazonian focus straddling Venezuela and Brazil, where the disease affects the hard-to-reach Yanomami indigenous population. We provide evidence of suppression of Onchocerca volvulus transmission by Simulium guianense s.l. in 16 previously hyperendemic Yanomami communities in southern Venezuela after 15 years of 6-monthly and 5 years of 3-monthly mass ivermectin treatment. METHODS: Baseline and monitoring and evaluation parasitological, ophthalmological, entomological and serological surveys were conducted in selected sentinel and extra-sentinel communities of the focus throughout the implementation of the programme. RESULTS: From 2010 to 2012–2015, clinico-parasitological surveys indicate a substantial decrease in skin microfilarial prevalence and intensity of infection; accompanied by no evidence (or very low prevalence and intensity) of ocular microfilariae in the examined population. Of a total of 51,341 S. guianense flies tested by PCR none had L3 infection (heads only). Prevalence of infective flies and seasonal transmission potentials in 2012–2013 were, respectively, under 1 % and 20 L3/person/transmission season. Serology in children aged 1–10 years demonstrated that although 26 out of 396 (7 %) individuals still had Ov-16 antibodies, only 4/218 (2 %) seropositives were aged 1–5 years. CONCLUSIONS: We report evidence of recent transmission and morbidity suppression in some communities of the focus representing 75 % of the Yanomami population and 70 % of all known communities. We conclude that onchocerciasis transmission could be feasibly interrupted in the Venezuelan Amazonian focus.     Emerging properties of financial time series in the “Game of Life”

    We explore the spatial complexity of Conway’s “Game of Life,” a prototypical cellular automaton by means of a geometrical procedure generating a two-dimensional random walk from a bidimensional lattice with periodical boundaries. The one-dimensional projection of this process is analyzed and it turns out that some of its statistical properties resemble the so-called stylized facts observed in financial time series. The scope and meaning of this result are discussed from the viewpoint of complex systems. In particular, we stress how the supposed peculiarities of financial time series are, often, overrated in their importance

    A Game-Based Learning Application to Help Learners to Practice Mathematical Patterns and Structures

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a game-based mobile application to help learners practice mathematical patterns and structures. Method: The study followed a mixed-method research design and prototyping methodology to guide the study in developing the mobile application. An instrument based on the Octalysis framework was developed as an evaluation tool for the study. Results: The study developed a mobile application based on the Octalysis framework. The application has fully achieved all its intended features based on the rating provided by the students and IT experts. Conclusion: The study successfully developed a mobile learning application for mathematical patterns and structures. By incorporating GBL principles and the Octalysis framework, the app achieved its intended features and received positive evaluations from students and IT experts. This highlights the potential of the app in promoting mathematical learning. Recommendations: This study recommends that the application be further enhanced to include other topics. Incorporating other game-based principles and approaches like timed questions and the difficulty level is also worth pursuing. Actual testing for end-users is also needed to verify the application's effectiveness. Practical Implications: Successful development of a game-based mobile app for practicing mathematical patterns and structures can transform education technology by engaging learners and enhancing their experience. This study provides valuable insights for future researchers developing similar applications, highlighting the potential to revolutionize traditional approaches and create an interactive learning environment for improving mathematical abilities
