    Social Identity Enactment Through Linguistic Style: Using Naturally Occurring Online Data to Study Behavioural Prototypicality

    Social identity prototypes refer to the quintessential representation of a particular social identity; prototypes define and prescribe the characteristics, behaviours and attitudes of a particular group, as distinguished from other groups (Hogg, 2001). For the most part, identity prototypicality is studied using self-reported methods used to assess perceptions of the prototypicality of self and others. However, in this thesis we provide behavioural evidence to demonstrate how linguistic style data can be used to measure identity-prototypical behaviour in real world contexts. Combining naturally-occurring online data with experimental data, the first chapter demonstrates that individuals behave in an identity-prototypical way regardless of the context in which they are communicating. Further, we show that this identity-prototypical style of communication is robust to topic, demographics, personality and platform, and moreover that the same identity-prototypical communication style can be detected in experimentally controlled conditions. In the second chapter, we demonstrate the small but statistically significant link between identity-prototypical communication and influence in real-world forum data. This finding provides insight into how group members respond to other ingroup members based on their prototypical communication style in real-world situations. Finally, in the third chapter, we use the group prototypical behaviour observed in naturally occurring online forum data to construct a typology of social identities, demonstrating the existence of five different types of social identity in line with the research of Deaux et al. (1995). We also demonstrate that it is possible to use this measurement of behavioural prototypicality to observe identity change over time. Using eight years’ worth of forum data, we illustrate the slow movement of the transgender identity from being a stigmatised identity in 2012, to shifting towards a collective action identity in 2019. In sum, the findings outlined in this thesis provide evidence to support the idea that it is possible to use machine learning algorithms and naturally occurring online data to study behavioural prototypicality in real world environments. Moreover, this methodology enables us to study identities ‘in the wild’ thus transcending the limitations associated with using self-reported methodologies or experimental approaches to study how individuals express and enact their group memberships.     Developing parasite control strategies in organic systems

    This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Organic farmers have taken a lead in attempting to reduce dependence on pharmaceutical control of parasites in farmed livestock. Focussing on management and nutrition, the objective of this research is to further develop control strategies, which can support and increase the flexibility of clean grazing systems for sheep and cattle. The approach has been to combine on-farm epidemiological studies, with replicated experiments, in order to develop and demonstrate better systems of control applicable to UK organic farms. Preliminary data from the first years' epidemiological studies are presented in this paper

    Patients as researchers - innovative experiences in UK National Health Service research

    Consumer involvement is an established priority in UK health and social care service development and research. To date, little has been published describing the process of consumer involvement and assessing ‘consumers’ contributions to research. This paper provides a practical account of the effective incorporation of consumers into a research team, and outlines the extent to which they can enhance the research cycle; from project development and conduct, through data analysis and interpretation, to dissemination. Salient points are illustrated using the example of their collaboration in a research project. Of particular note were consumers’ contributions to the development of an ethically enhanced, more robust project design, and enriched data interpretation, which may not have resulted had consumers not been an integral part of the research team

    Mapping subnational HIV mortality in six Latin American countries with incomplete vital registration systems

    Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a public health priority in Latin America. While the burden of HIV is historically concentrated in urban areas and high-risk groups, subnational estimates that cover multiple countries and years are missing. This paucity is partially due to incomplete vital registration (VR) systems and statistical challenges related to estimating mortality rates in areas with low numbers of HIV deaths. In this analysis, we address this gap and provide novel estimates of the HIV mortality rate and the number of HIV deaths by age group, sex, and municipality in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico. Methods: We performed an ecological study using VR data ranging from 2000 to 2017, dependent on individual country data availability. We modeled HIV mortality using a Bayesian spatially explicit mixed-effects regression model that incorporates prior information on VR completeness. We calibrated our results to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017. Results: All countries displayed over a 40-fold difference in HIV mortality between municipalities with the highest and lowest age-standardized HIV mortality rate in the last year of study for men, and over a 20-fold difference for women. Despite decreases in national HIV mortality in all countries—apart from Ecuador—across the period of study, we found broad variation in relative changes in HIV mortality at the municipality level and increasing relative inequality over time in all countries. In all six countries included in this analysis, 50% or more HIV deaths were concentrated in fewer than 10% of municipalities in the latest year of study. In addition, national age patterns reflected shifts in mortality to older age groups—the median age group among decedents ranged from 30 to 45 years of age at the municipality level in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico in 2017. Conclusions: Our subnational estimates of HIV mortality revealed significant spatial variation and diverging local trends in HIV mortality over time and by age. This analysis provides a framework for incorporating data and uncertainty from incomplete VR systems and can help guide more geographically precise public health intervention to support HIV-related care and reduce HIV-related deaths

    Changes in Habitat Use of Montezuma Quail in Response to Tree Canopy Reduction in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico

    Montezuma quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) are unique among quail with respect to clutch size, diet, covey dynamics, and habitat use. With the exception of a few notable early studies, there is relatively little information on the ecology of Montezuma quail. Pervious research has indicated that one of the primary habitats utilized by Montezuma quail is pinyon–juniper (Pinus spp.–Juniperus spp.) woodlands. Throughout many areas of the southwestern United States, pinyon–juniper woodlands are often targeted for thinning projects. Many studies have been conducted on the amount of canopy cover needed by other quail species. However, data on characteristics of their preferred habitat in many of the mountains they inhabit is limited in the literature and no data are currently published on their response to thinning projects. Therefore, studies are warranted to fill in these missing data, which will increase our knowledge about the habitat requirements of Montezuma quail and allow us to make informed decisions about thinning projects in areas occupied by Montezuma quail. The goal of this research was to evaluate Montezuma quail responses to common silvicultural practices, specifically pinyon–juniper thinning in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. Results of our project indicated that Montezuma quail selected for sites that had been thinned to reduce canopy cover to a 30–40% mosaic. Selection for this habitat was much higher than selection for the surrounding area, which consisted of ≥70% canopy cover (Manly–Chesson Selectivity Index = 1.68). Overall, this study yields vital information for managers considering implanting thinning projects in Montezuma quail habitat
