    A Systematic Review of Coach Feedback During Practice and Competition in Team Sports

    Coach feedback is acknowledged to have a vital role in athlete learning, while systematic observation is a common tool used in measuring coach behaviour. The purpose of this review was to identify coaches’ use of feedback in developmental and performance contexts. A literature search was conducted using EBSCO HOST and SCOPUS databases. Studies were reviewed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Data were extracted from 31 studies which met the inclusion criteria. Analysis revealed three themes, 1) evidence base surrounding feedback types observed. 2) variation in observation tool and feedback types observed. 3) quality of coach feedback. The multiple feedback types measured across the studies included suggests there is limited agreement on the types of feedback most important to measure. For the impact of feedback to be better understood, the feedback types captured via systematic observation need revising in line with research that has identified the important characteristics of feedback. A greater evidence-informed approach to the observation of feedback may help to develop a greater critical understanding of the feedback process in learning and performance. Where there were consistencies in feedback type, the quality of the feedback delivered by coaches could be questioned

    Development of a multiplex qPCR for the quantification of three protozoan parasites of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica

    A multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for the simultaneous detection of 3 eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica parasites, Perkinsus marinus, Haplosporidium nelsoni, and H. costale, was developed using 3 different fluorescently labeled hydrolysis probes. The primers and probe from a previously validated singleplex qPCR for P. marinus detection were combined with newly designed primers and probes specific for H. nelsoni and H. costale. The functionality of the multiplex assay was demonstrated on 2 different platforms by the linear relationship of the standard curves and similar cycle threshold (CT) values between parasites. Efficiency of the multiplex qPCR assay on the Roche and BioRad platforms ranged between 93 and 101%. The sensitivity of detection ranged between 10 and 100 copies of plasmid DNA for P. marinus and Haplosporidium spp., respectively. The concordance between the Roche and BioRad platforms in the identification of the parasites P. marinus, H. nelsoni, and H. costale was 91, 97, and 97%, respectively, with a 10-fold increase in the sensitivity of detection of Haplosporidium spp. on the BioRad thermocycler. The concordance between multiplex qPCR and histology for P. marinus, H. nelsoni, and H. costale was 54, 57, and 87%, respectively. Discordances between detection methods were largely related to localized or low levels of infections in oyster tissues, and qPCR was the more sensitive diagnostic. The multiplex qPCR developed here is a sensitive diagnostic tool for the quantification and surveillance of single and mixed infections in the eastern oyster

    Emergency Glucagon Injection Device

    Glucagon is a drug administered to people with diabetes that are experiencing a seizure due to low blood glucose levels. The current method of injecting glucagon during a hypoglycemic seizure is lengthy and complicated when time equates to minimizing the effects of an emergency situation. This project is student created and the result of the design team recognizing a serious problem and deciding to find a better solution. The goal of this project was to streamline this process. Several working prototypes were developed and evaluated before a final design was chosen. Safety, durability and usability were all considerable factors. The properties of glucagon require it to be stored in a powered form until before it is injected. Therefore, the device had to safely store the medicine and diluting solution separately. It is also important that the injection device is robust enough to be carried around by the person with diabetes to have it in case of emergency. The novel part of this design was how the two components were separated via a barrier and once that was removed and the two drugs mixed the injection device sealed itself. The approach taken with this development was an iterative version of the design process. Several concepts were brainstormed and from that a practical solution was developed. The final 3-D printed prototype meets and exceeds the goal by reducing the preparation time to one-eighth of the previous kit.     Transcriptomic, lipid, and histological profiles suggest changes in health in fish from a pesticide hot spot.

    Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) were collected at the beginning (1st sampling) and end (2nd sampling) of the wet season from Sandy Creek, an agriculturally impacted catchment in the Mackay Whitsundays region of the Great Barrier Reef catchment area, and from Repulse Creek, located approximately 100 km north in Conway National Park, to assess the impacts of pesticide exposure. Gill and liver histology, lipid class composition in muscle, and the hepatic transcriptome were examined. The first sample of Repulse Creek fish showed little tissue damage and low transcript levels of xenobiotic metabolism enzymes. Sandy Creek fish showed altered transcriptomic patterns, including those that regulate lipid metabolism, xenobiotic metabolism, and immune response; gross histological alterations including lipidosis; and differences in some lipid classes. The second sampling of Repulse Creek fish showed similar alterations in hepatic transcriptome and tissue structure as fish from Sandy Creek. These changes may indicate a decrease in health of pesticide exposed fish

    Bayesian inferencing and deterministic anisotropy for the retrieval of the molecular geometry ∣Ψ(r)∣2|\Psi(\mathbf{r})|^2 in gas-phase diffraction experiments

    Currently, our general approach to retrieve the molecular geometry from ultrafast gas-phase diffraction heavily relies on complex geometric simulations to make conclusive interpretations. In this manuscript, we develop a broadly applicable ultrafast gas-phase diffraction method that approximates the molecular frame geometry ∣Ψ(r,t)∣2|\Psi(\mathbf{r}, t)|^2 distribution using Bayesian Inferencing. This method does not require complex molecular dynamics simulation and can identify the unique molecular structure. We demonstrate this method's viability by retrieving the ground state geometry distribution ∣Ψ(r)∣2|\Psi(\mathbf{r})|^2 for both simulated stretched NO2_2 and measured ground state N2_2O. Due to our statistical interpretation, we retrieve a coordinate-space resolution on the order of 100~fm, depending on signal quality, an improvement of order 100 compared to commonly used Fourier transform based methods. By directly measuring the width of ∣Ψ(r)∣2|\Psi(\mathbf{r})|^2, this is generally only accessible through simulation, we open ultrafast gas-phase diffraction capabilities to measurements beyond current analysis approaches. Our method also leverages deterministic ensemble anisotropy; this provides an explicit dependence on the molecular frame angles. This method's ability to retrieve the unique molecular structure with high resolution, and without complex simulations, provides the potential to effectively turn gas-phase ultrafast diffraction into a discovery oriented technique, one that probes systems that are prohibitively difficult to simulate.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables.     Brief Report: Theatre as Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    The pilot investigation evaluated a theatrical intervention program, Social Emotional NeuroScience Endocrinology (SENSE) Theatre, designed to improve socioemotional functioning and reduce stress in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Eight children with ASD were paired with typically developing peers that served as expert models. Neuropsychological, biological (cortisol and oxytocin), and behavioral measures were assessed in a pretest–posttest design. The intervention was embedded in a full musical theatrical production. Participants showed some improvement in face identification and theory of mind skills. The intervention shows potential promise in improving the socioemotional functioning in children with ASD through the utilization of peers, video and behavioral modeling, and a community-based theatrical setting

    A 10Gbps optical burst switching network incorporating ultra-fast (5ns) wavelength switched tunable laser sources

    This paper outlines the development of a prototype optical burst mode switching network based upon a star topology, the ultimate application of which could be as a transparent payload processor onboard satellite repeaters. The network architecture incorporates multiple tunable laser sources, burst mode receivers and a passive optical router (Arrayed Waveguide Grating). Each tunable optical signal should carry ≥10Gbps and be capable of wavelength switching in c. 5ns timescales. Two monolithic tunable laser types, based upon different technologies, will be utilised: a Slotted Fabry Perot laser (a Fabry Perot laser with slots added in order to introduce controlled cavity perturbations); and a Modulated Grating Y-Branch Laser (MGY: a widely tunable, multi-section device similar to the DBR laser). While the Slotted Fabry Perot laser is expected to achieve the required switching times, it is an immature technology not yet capable of achieving tunability over 80 ITU channels from a single chip. The MGY device is a more mature technology and has full C-band ITU channel coverage, but is not capable of the required short switching times. Hence, in order to facilitate the integration of this more mature technology into the prototype breadboard with the requisite switching time capabilities, a system of ‘dual laser’ transmitters is being developed to enable data transmission from one MGY laser while the other switches and vice-versa.
