Application of thermoelectric aging models to polymeric insulation in cable geometry
The life expressions of models of insulation ageing are functions of temperature and field as well as material parameters. A methodology is presented that allows these models to be applied to a cable geometry in which there is a radial variation of both field and temperature. In this way material parameters can be extracted from cable data. The methodology is illustrated using one such model and the parameters deduced from cable failure distributions are compared with those obtained for thin films. This comparison allows conclusions to be drawn about how the ageing process affects specimens of the same material with different volumes

Application of polymer ageing models to power cables
Ageing models have been developed to predict the lifetime of polymeric insulation subject to electro-thermal stresses. We present here a method for applying the models to situations in which the field is not constant over the whole specimen, as for cable geometry. The method has been applied to characteristic lifetime data from AC ageing experiments on cables. The results are presented, and the effect of insulation volume upon the model parameters is discussed
Design of Ge/SiGe quantum-confined Stark effect electroabsorption heterostructures for CMOS compatible photonics
We describe a combined 6×6 k.p and one-band effective mass modelling tool to calculate absorption spectra in Ge–SiGe multiple quantum well (MQW) heterostructures. We find good agreement with experimentally measured absorption spectra of Ge–SiGe MQW structures described previously in the literature, proving its predictive capability, and the simulation tool is used for the analysis and design of electroabsorption modulators. We employ strain-engineering in Ge–SiGe MQW systems to design structures for modulation at 1310 nm and 1550 nm

Material Morphology and energy barriers to electrical ageing
A distribution of the parameters representing activation energy of the ageing process within the Dissado-Montanari-Mazzanti (DMM) lifetime model has been shown to model experimental lifetime distributions of PET films well. The results imply small differences in the local environments of the moieties involved in the ageing process. Very small changes in the minimum activation energy values have a pronounced effect on the resultant lifetimes of polymer specimens. Changes in the distributions of activation energies with field and temperature can be explained by assuming the ageing process to be one whereby polymer segments on lamella surfaces crystallise to create free volume within the polymer
An experimental study of reactive turbulent mixing
An experimental study of two coaxial gas streams, which react very rapidly, was performed to investigate the mixing characteristics of turbulent flow fields. The center stream consisted of a CO-N2 mixture and the outer annular stream consisted of air vitiated by H2 combustion. The streams were at equal velocity (50 m/sec) and temperature (1280 K). Turbulence measurements were obtained using hot film anemometry. A sampling probe was used to obtain time averaged gas compositions. Six different turbulence generators were placed in the annular passage to alter the flow field mixing characteristics. The turbulence generators affected the bulk mixing of the streams and the extent of CO conversion to different degrees. The effects can be related to the average eddy size (integral scale) and the bulk mixing. Higher extents of conversion of CO to CO2 were found be increasing the bulk mixing and decreasing the average eddy size
Raman scattering through surfaces having biaxial symmetry
Magnetic Raman scattering in two-leg spin ladder materials and the
relationship between the anisotropic exchange integrals are analyzed by P. J.
Freitas and R. R. P. Singh in Phys. Rev. B, {\bf 62}, 14113 (2000). The angular
dependence of the two-magnon scattering is shown to provide information for the
magnetic anisotropy in the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and La_6Ca_8Cu_24O_41 compounds. We
point out that the experimental results of polarized Raman measurements at
arbitrary angles with respect to the crystal axes have to be corrected for the
light ellipticity induced inside the optically anisotropic crystals. We refer
quantitatively to the case of Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and discuss potential implications
for spectroscopic studies in other materials with strong anisotropy.Comment: To be published as a Comment in Phys. Rev.
Chaos in Time Dependent Variational Approximations to Quantum Dynamics
Dynamical chaos has recently been shown to exist in the Gaussian
approximation in quantum mechanics and in the self-consistent mean field
approach to studying the dynamics of quantum fields. In this study, we first
show that any variational approximation to the dynamics of a quantum system
based on the Dirac action principle leads to a classical Hamiltonian dynamics
for the variational parameters. Since this Hamiltonian is generically nonlinear
and nonintegrable, the dynamics thus generated can be chaotic, in distinction
to the exact quantum evolution. We then restrict attention to a system of two
biquadratically coupled quantum oscillators and study two variational schemes,
the leading order large N (four canonical variables) and Hartree (six canonical
variables) approximations. The chaos seen in the approximate dynamics is an
artifact of the approximations: this is demonstrated by the fact that its onset
occurs on the same characteristic time scale as the breakdown of the
approximations when compared to numerical solutions of the time-dependent
Schrodinger equation.Comment: 10 pages (12 figures), RevTeX (plus macro), uses epsf, minor typos
