    Neural spike train synchronization indices: Definitions, interpretations, and applications

    A comparison of previously defined spike train synchronization indices is undertaken within a stochastic point process framework. The second-order cumulant density (covariance density) is shown to be common to all the indices. Simulation studies were used to investigate the sampling variability of a single index based on the second-order cumulant. The simulations used a paired motoneurone model and a paired regular spiking cortical neurone model. The sampling variability of spike trains generated under identical conditions from the paired motoneurone model varied from 50% to 160% of the estimated value. On theoretical grounds, and on the basis of simulated data a rate dependence is present in all synchronization indices. The application of coherence and pooled coherence estimates to the issue of synchronization indices is considered. This alternative frequency domain approach allows an arbitrary number of spike train pairs to be evaluated for statistically significant differences, and combined into a single population measure. The pooled coherence framework allows pooled time domain measures to be derived, application of this to the simulated data is illustrated. Data from the cortical neurone model is generated over a wide range of firing rates (1-250 spikes/s). The pooled coherence framework correctly characterizes the sampling variability as not significant over this wide operating range.     Using cascading Bloom filters to improve the memory usage for de Brujin graphs

    De Brujin graphs are widely used in bioinformatics for processing next-generation sequencing data. Due to a very large size of NGS datasets, it is essential to represent de Bruijn graphs compactly, and several approaches to this problem have been proposed recently. In this work, we show how to reduce the memory required by the algorithm of [3] that represents de Brujin graphs using Bloom filters. Our method requires 30% to 40% less memory with respect to the method of [3], with insignificant impact to construction time. At the same time, our experiments showed a better query time compared to [3]. This is, to our knowledge, the best practical representation for de Bruijn graphs.Comment: 12 pages, submitte

    Growth and persistence of 17 annual medic (Medicago spp.) accessions on clay soils in central Queensland

    Seventeen accessions of annual medics were evaluated on clay soil sites at Emerald, Theodore, Biloela and Mundubbera, central Queensland. Successful medics could have a role in both permanent and ley pastures. However, these are marginal areas for medics with winter (June-August) rainfalls of 80-100 mm. The accessions were selected on the basis of results in southern Queensland, a more favoured area for medics. There were 9 accessions of Medicago truncatula (barrel medic), 4 of M. scutellata (snail medic), 2 of M. polymorpha (burr medic) and 1 each of M. aculeata (keg medic) and M. orbicularis (button medic). Lucerne (M. sativa) cv. Trifecta was sown at 3 sites. All sites except Theodore were irrigated in the year of establishment (1993). The medic seedlings at Theodore died in 1993 and the trial was resown in 1994. Measurements were made of seed set in the first year and whenever it occurred in later years, seedling density in most years and yield when there was adequate growth. Selected measurements were made of soil seed reserves. Measurements ceased in 1998

    Duality Orbits, Dyon Spectrum and Gauge Theory Limit of Heterotic String Theory on T^6

    For heterotic string theory compactified on T^6, we derive the complete set of T-duality invariants which characterize a pair of charge vectors (Q,P) labelling the electric and magnetic charges of the dyon. Using this we can identify the complete set of dyons to which the previously derived degeneracy formula can be extended. By going near special points in the moduli space of the theory we derive the spectrum of quarter BPS dyons in N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory with simply laced gauge groups. The results are in agreement with those derived from field theory analysis.Comment: LaTeX file, 22 page

    Past years have brought an increasingly wider recognition of the ubiquity of relativistic outflows (jets) in galactic nuclei, which has turned jets into an effective tool for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies.     Optimal low-thrust trajectories to asteroids through an algorithm based on differential dynamic programming

    In this paper an optimisation algorithm based on Differential Dynamic Programming is applied to the design of rendezvous and fly-by trajectories to near Earth objects. Differential dynamic programming is a successive approximation technique that computes a feedback control law in correspondence of a fixed number of decision times. In this way the high dimensional problem characteristic of low-thrust optimisation is reduced into a series of small dimensional problems. The proposed method exploits the stage-wise approach to incorporate an adaptive refinement of the discretisation mesh within the optimisation process. A particular interpolation technique was used to preserve the feedback nature of the control law, thus improving robustness against some approximation errors introduced during the adaptation process. The algorithm implements global variations of the control law, which ensure a further increase in robustness. The results presented show how the proposed approach is capable of fully exploiting the multi-body dynamics of the problem; in fact, in one of the study cases, a fly-by of the Earth is scheduled, which was not included in the first guess solution

    Compact jets as probes for sub-parsec scale regions in AGN

    Compact relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei offer an effective tool for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies. The emission properties, dynamics, and evolution of jets in AGN are closely connected to the characteristics of the central supermassive black hole, accretion disk and broad-line region in active galaxies.
