Using Continuum-Discontinuum Element Method to Model the Foliation-Affected Fracturing in Rock Brazilian Test
In this study, the continuum-discontinuum element method (CDEM) was used to investigate the tensile fracture mechanism of rock materials. An isotropic rock disk model and models considering different foliation inclinations were established, and three schemes were used to simulate the rock fracturing in Brazilian test. Then, the influences of the rock matrix and foliation strengths on anisotropy rock fracturing were investigated. Furtherly, simulation results were verified, and the rock fracture mechanisms were discussed. The results show that the rock fracturing in Brazilian test can be accurately simulated by CDEM, which is in accordance with the experimental results. For isotropic and horizontal foliation rock, the stress concentration in loading positions causes a local fracture of rock sample, and application of a local strengthening scheme can simulate the integral tension fracture of sample middle. As the foliation angle varies from 15 degrees to 45 degrees, the rock fracturing is affected by the stress concentration and foliation distribution. In splitting simulation, a strengthening scheme should be adopted to overcome this influence. As a result, the rock sample generates the sliding and compression-shear fracture. As the foliation angle changes from 45 degrees to 75 degrees, the foliation, rather than the matrix, dominates the fracture behavior of rock sample. For vertical foliations' rock, as the middle foliation thickness is appropriately broadened, the simulation results are reasonable. In general, the tensile strength of anisotropic rock entirely decreases with an increase of foliation angle, and the effect of foliation strength on the tensile strength rock sample is larger than that of the rock matrix
Coupling of material point and continuum discontinuum element methods for simulating blast-induced fractures in rock
A rock blasting simulation method is proposed that couples the material point method (MPM) and continuum discontinuum element method (CDEM). Blast-induced rock fractures are captured by the CDEM using normal and shear springs, and the explosive detonation is simulated by the MPM with a Jones-Wilkins-Lee equation of state. A particle-surface/edge contact method is introduced into the MPM-CDEM to calculate the interaction between the detonation products and rock medium. Three numerical examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The fracture degree is represented as the ratio of the number of fractured springs to the total number of springs, and is used to analyze the evolution of shear and tension cracks under blasting. The simulation results show that the proposed numerical method well simulates blast-induced rock fractures and considers both progressive rock fracturing and the real explosive detonation. In particular, the expansion of the detonation gas, crushed zone around the blasthole, radial cracks, and effects of pre-existing stress on the blast-induced fractures are all successfully simulated
Coral reef applications of Landsat-8: geomorphic zonation and benthic habitat mapping of Xisha Islands, China
Being one of the most significant and valuable coral reef systems in the South China Sea, the Xisha Islands has undergone rapid transformation due to increasing stressors from human impacts and climate change in recent years. However, as indispensable information for coral reef monitoring and management, the detailed reef extent, geomorphic zonation, or benthic composition of the Xisha Islands is not well documented. Considering limited access to the Xisha Islands, the rapid development of optical remote sensing technology provides us with a feasible mean for coral reef observation. This study adopted a water depth substitution index â probabilistic inundation (PI) â combined with depth-invariant index (DII) to achieve reef extent exploration, geomorphologic and benthic habitat types classification with unsupervised classification algorithms based on Landsat-8 time-series satellite data. Compared with two open-access datasets, the extent of each independent reef extracted from PI exhibited higher similarity with the actual boundary conditions displayed in RGB (Red-Green-Blue) composite images from Landsat-8. Based on PI and derived slope, we obtained geomorphic zonation classification results, and similarly benthic compositions were retrieved based on PI, DII, and reflectance. The overall accuracy of geomorphic zonation and benthic habitat classification results were 72% and 86%, respectively. We also interestingly discovered that corals of the Xisha Islands may be capable of an ability to resist chronic heat stress as a growth trend of reef area after two successive stress events in 2014â2015 were observed at most reefs. The proposed mapping framework of this study provides a repeatable and flexible scheme in depicting the comprehensive situation of coral reefs at Xisha Islands based only on publicly available remote sensing data without complicated pre-set parameters, which could be easily extended to coral reef research around the world. Simultaneously, the findings also provide requisite information supporting the sustainable management and conservation of coral reef ecosystems in the Xisha Islands.</p
