    A Criterion for the Critical Number of Fermions and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Anisotropic QED(2+1)

    By analyzing the strength of a photon-fermion coupling using basic scattering processes we calculate the effect of a velocity anisotropy on the critical number of fermions at which mass is dynamically generated in planar QED. This gives a quantitative criterion which can be used to locate a quantum critical point at which fermions are gapped and confined out of the physical spectrum in a phase diagram of various condensed matter systems. We also discuss the mechanism of relativity restoration within the symmetric, quantum-critical phase of the theory.Comment: To appear in Physical Review

    Mechanical strength, mass loss and volumetric changes of drying adobe matrices combined with kaolin and fine soil particles

    Earthen construction represents almost 30% of the housing in developing countries, partially because of its low cost compared to steel and concrete construction, and also because the raw materials are available almost everywhere. One of the biggest disadvantages of earthen materials is the lack of information and variety on their constitutive materials, specifically their soil type. This work addresses the physical and mechanical properties of adobe matrices containing different concentrations of kaolin, which is a specific type of clay, as well as different proportions of fine particles of the original soil of the adobe matrix. All adobe matrices were manufactured with a SM-SC soil obtained from Santiago, Chile, and had concentrations of 0, 10, 30, and 50% of kaolin and 0, 10, 20, and 30% fines of the original soil content. It is concluded that the compressive strength of the studied earthen mixtures improves when kaolin is added to the mixture. The shrinkage of adobe matrices with kaolin compared to plain adobe matrices was reduced during the first days of age and stayed stable after that. This work shows that the inclusion of fines from the original soil (other than kaolin) did not significantly affect any of the studied properties. It also shows that the Unified Soil Classification System is not sufficient to characterize soils for adobe matrices

    Bruise Simulation in Peach Grading Lines as a tool for designing Improvement Strategies.

    The Physical Properties Laboratory (LPF) has been working on the improvement of fruit and vegetable grading lines since 1992'. The experience shows that the improvement of grading lines for decreasing mechanical damages has to be approached from two viewpoints: 1) machinery aggressiveness, and 2) fruit susceptibility. Machinery aggressiveness can be characterized as impact probability for different impact intensities assessed by means of electronic fruits (IS-100) 2,5 . On the other hand, bruise susceptibility can be determined using different laboratory tests. A recent study from LPF4 shows that damage may arise differently in pome and in stone fruits, since: a) pome fruits are mainly stress-susceptible, while stone fruits appear to be more deformation-susceptible, and b) bruise size may be a good predictor for bruise susceptibility in pome fruits while for stone fruits bruise probability is the most relevant characteristic of bruise susceptibility. Also, this study indicates the feasibility of predicting bruise probability using several mechanical and load characterization parameters. Despite the efforts to establish damage thresholds in peachess, no simulation models are currently available for predicting bruise occurrence in grading lines

    En este estudio se describe el software de simulación de daños en líneas de clasificación de fruta SIMLIN 2.0. Se refiere su empleo en la simulación de confección de melocotones Sudanell con una susceptibilidad intrínseca estimada mediante un modelo logístico, ajustado con esta misma herramienta, a partir de datos de Laboratorio SIMLIN 2.0 precisa la caracterización de las partidas de fruta mediante distribuciones de probabilidad, la cual puede llevarse a cabo con un interfaz de usuario de fácil utilización. El software permite evaluar los porcentajes de daño previstos para líneas de clasificación con distintos niveles de agresividad establecidos por medio de bases de datos generadas con frutos electrónicos tipo IS-100. Aporta distintas salidas gráficas que ayudan a definir las estrategias de mejora que más se adecúen a cada caso

    A Nodal Signaling Pathway Regulates the Laterality of Neuroanatomical Asymmetries in the Zebrafish Forebrain

    AbstractAnimals show behavioral asymmetries that are mediated by differences between the left and right sides of the brain. We report that the laterality of asymmetric development of the diencephalic habenular nuclei and the photoreceptive pineal complex is regulated by the Nodal signaling pathway and by midline tissue. Analysis of zebrafish embryos with compromised Nodal signaling reveals an early role for this pathway in the repression of asymmetrically expressed genes in the diencephalon. Later signaling mediated by the EGF-CFC protein One-eyed pinhead and the forkhead transcription factor Schmalspur is required to overcome this repression. When expression of Nodal pathway genes is either absent or symmetrical, neuroanatomical asymmetries are still established but are randomized. This indicates that Nodal signaling is not required for asymmetric development per se but is essential to determine the laterality of the asymmetry
