Deterministically Computing Reduction Numbers of Polynomial Ideals
We discuss the problem of determining reduction number of a polynomial ideal
I in n variables. We present two algorithms based on parametric computations.
The first one determines the absolute reduction number of I and requires
computation in a polynomial ring with (n-dim(I))dim(I) parameters and n-dim(I)
variables. The second one computes via a Grobner system the set of all
reduction numbers of the ideal I and thus in particular also its big reduction
number. However,it requires computations in a ring with n.dim(I) parameters and

Functional consequences of mutations in CDKL5, an X-linked gene involved in infantile spasms and mental retardation
Mutations in the X-linked cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) gene have been identified in patients with Rett syndrome, West syndrome, and X-linked infantile spasms sharing the common features of generally intractable early seizures and mental retardation. Disease-causing mutations are distributed in both the catalytic domain and in the large COOH terminus. In this report, we examine the functional consequences of some Rett mutations of CDKL5 together with some synthetically designed derivatives useful to underline the functional domains of the protein. The mutated CDKL5 derivatives have been subjected to in vitro kinase assays and analyzed for phosphorylation of the TEY (Thr-Glu-Tyr) motif within the activation loop, their subcellular localization, and the capacity of CDKL5 to interact with itself. Whereas wild-type CDKL5 autophosphorylates and mediates the phosphorylation of the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) in vitro, Rett-mutated proteins show both impaired and increased catalytic activity suggesting that a tight regulation of CDKL5 is required for correct brain functions. Furthermore, we show that CDKL5 can self-associate and mediate the phosphorylation of its own TEY (Thr-Glu-Tyr) motif. Eventually, we show that the COOH terminus regulates CDKL5 properties; in particular, it negatively influences the catalytic activity and is required for its proper sub-nuclear localization. We propose a model in which CDKL5 phosphorylation is required for its entrance into the nucleus whereas a portion of the COOH-terminal domain is responsible for a stable residency in this cellular compartment probably through protein-protein interactions
Existence of global strong solutions to a beam-fluid interaction system
We study an unsteady non linear fluid-structure interaction problem which is
a simplified model to describe blood flow through viscoleastic arteries. We
consider a Newtonian incompressible two-dimensional flow described by the
Navier-Stokes equations set in an unknown domain depending on the displacement
of a structure, which itself satisfies a linear viscoelastic beam equation. The
fluid and the structure are fully coupled via interface conditions prescribing
the continuity of the velocities at the fluid-structure interface and the
action-reaction principle. We prove that strong solutions to this problem are
global-in-time. We obtain in particular that contact between the viscoleastic
wall and the bottom of the fluid cavity does not occur in finite time. To our
knowledge, this is the first occurrence of a no-contact result, but also of
existence of strong solutions globally in time, in the frame of interactions
between a viscous fluid and a deformable structure
A Kato type Theorem for the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations with a moving rigid body
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes
equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous
open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler
equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation
rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the
viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in
an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue
of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear if the
additional difficulties linked to the body's dynamic make this issue more
difficult or not. In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in an
incompressible fluid occupying the complementary set in the space and we prove
that a Kato type condition implies the convergence of the fluid velocity and of
the body velocity as well, what seems to indicate that an answer in the case of
a fixed boundary could also bring an answer to the case where there is a moving
body in the fluid
Once-monthly paliperidone palmitate in recently diagnosed and chronic non-acute patients with schizophrenia
OBJECTIVE: To explore the treatment response, tolerability and safety of once-monthly paliperidone palmitate (PP1M) in non-acute patients switched to oral antipsychotics stratified by time since diagnosis as recently diagnosed (3 years). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Post-hoc analysis of a prospective, interventional, single-arm, multicentre, open-label, 6-month study performed in 233 recently diagnosed and 360 chronic patients. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The proportion achieving treatment response (defined as >/=20% improvement in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS] total score from baseline to endpoint) and maintained efficacy (defined as non-inferiority in the change in PANSS total score at endpoint [Schuirmann's test]). RESULTS: 71.4% of recently diagnosed and 59.2% of chronic patients showed a >/=20% decrease in PANSS total score (p=0.0028 between groups). Changes in PANSS Marder factors, PANSS subscales, and the proportion of patients with a Personal and Social Performance scale (PSP) total score of 71-100 were significantly greater in recently diagnosed compared with chronic patients. PP1M was well tolerated, presenting no new safety signals. CONCLUSION: These data show that recently diagnosed patients treated with PP1M had a significantly higher treatment response and improved functioning, as assessed by the PSP total score, than chronic patients
The political nexus between water and economics in Brazil:A critique of recent policy reforms
The reform of water policies in Brazil has involved a combination of regulatory norms and economic-incentive instruments. Nonetheless, contrary to its formal objectives, the process has largely failed to prevent widespread environmental impacts and growing spatial and sectoral conflicts. The main reason for such failures is the perverse influence of market rationality, which is particularly evident in the reorganization of the public sector, the quantification of the monetary value of water, and the payment for environmental services
Sustainable Triazine-Based Dehydro-Condensation Agents for Amide Synthesis
Conventional methods employed today for the synthesis of amides often lack of economic and environmental sustainability. Triazine-derived quaternary ammonium salts, e.g., 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMTMM(Cl)), emerged as promising dehydro-condensation agents for amide synthesis, although suffering of limited stability and high costs. In the present work, a simple protocol for the synthesis of amides mediated by 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine (CDMT) and a tert-amine has been described and data are compared to DMTMM(Cl) and other CDMT-derived quaternary ammonium salts (DMT-Ams(X), X: Cl- or ClO4-). Different tert-amines (Ams) were tested for the synthesis of various DMT-Ams(Cl), but only DMTMM(Cl) could be isolated and employed for dehydro-condensation reactions, while all CDMT/tert-amine systems tested were efficient as dehydro-condensation agents. Interestingly, in best reaction conditions, CDMT and 1,4-dimethylpiperazine gave N-phenethyl benzamide in 93% yield in 15 min, with up to half the amount of tert-amine consumption. The efficiency of CDMT/tert-amine was further compared to more stable triazine quaternary ammonium salts having a perchlorate counter anion (DMT-Ams(ClO4)). Overall CDMT/tert-amine systems appear to be a viable and more economical alternative to most dehydro-condensation agents employed today
New Measurements of Fragmentation Cross Sections from ^(56)Fe and ^(60)Ni Beams at Energies Relevant to Galactic Cosmic-Ray Propagation
Models of cosmic-ray propagation in the Galaxy rely heavily on knowledge of the nuclear fragmentation cross sections which govern spallation of heavy nuclei in the interstellar medium. Interpretation of high-precision cosmic-ray composition data such as those from the ACE and Ulysses missions requires improved cross-section data. New measurements of partial fragmentation cross sections have been made with high statistical accuracy at the GSI heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) using ^(56)Fe beams at five energies between 300 and 1500 MeV/nucleon, and 60 Ni beams at 500 and 1000 MeV/nucleon, on a liquid hydrogen target.
