Resolving the nature of electronic excitations in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering
The study of elementary bosonic excitations is essential toward a complete
description of quantum electronic solids. In this context, resonant inelastic
X-ray scattering (RIXS) has recently risen to becoming a versatile probe of
electronic excitations in strongly correlated electron systems. The nature of
the radiation-matter interaction endows RIXS with the ability to resolve the
charge, spin and orbital nature of individual excitations. However, this
capability has been only marginally explored to date. Here, we demonstrate a
systematic method for the extraction of the character of excitations as
imprinted in the azimuthal dependence of the RIXS signal. Using this novel
approach, we resolve the charge, spin, and orbital nature of elastic
scattering, (para-)magnon/bimagnon modes, and higher energy dd excitations in
magnetically-ordered and superconducting copper-oxide perovskites (Nd2CuO4 and
YBa2Cu3O6.75). Our method derives from a direct application of scattering
theory, enabling us to deconstruct the complex scattering tensor as a function
of energy loss. In particular, we use the characteristic tensorial nature of
each excitation to precisely and reliably disentangle the charge and spin
contributions to the low energy RIXS spectrum. This procedure enables to
separately track the evolution of spin and charge spectral distributions in
cuprates with doping. Our results demonstrate a new capability that can be
integrated into the RIXS toolset, and that promises to be widely applicable to
materials with intertwined spin, orbital, and charge excitations
Construction of self in a support group for people with eating disorders
The aim of this study was to understand the discursive constructions of self, made by people diagnosed with anorexia and bulimia, who were participating in a psychological support group. Fourteen young women, who were being attended to in a psychological support group in a public health service at a university hospital, took part in the study. Ten consecutive weekly group sessions were selected and qualitatively analyzed using Bakhtin's historical and cultural approach. Commonly held beliefs about eating disorders were evoked in the participants' words, and were refuted, negotiated, or accepted in the group, furthering the deconstruction of myths about the disorders. The analysis highlights the importance of support groups as a therapeutic tool that enables the production of new, non-pathological approaches to eating disorders and the people diagnosed with them
Adenocarcinoma classification: patterns and prognosis
Lung cancer is the most frequent human malignancy and the principal cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Adenocarcinoma is now the main histologic type, accounting for almost half of all the cases. The 2015 World Health Organization has adopted the classification recently developed by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, American Thoracic Society, and European Respiratory Society. This new adenocarcinoma classification has incorporated up-to-date advances in radiological, molecular and oncological knowledge, providing univocal diagnostic criteria and terminology. For resection specimens, new entities have been defined such as adenocarcinoma in situ and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma to designate adenocarcinomas, mostly nonmucinous and ≤ 3 cm in size, with either pure lepidic growth or predominant lepidic growth with ≤ 5 mm invasion, respectively. For invasive adenocarcinoma, the new classification has introduced histological subtyping according to the predominant pattern of growth of the neoplastic cells: lepidic (formerly non mucinous brochioloalveolar adenocarcinoma), acinar, papillary, micropapillary, and solid. Of note, micropapillary pattern is a brand new histologic subtype. In addition, four variants of invasive adenocarcinoma are recognized, namely invasive mucinous (formerly mucinous brochioloalveolar adenocarcinoma), colloid, fetal, and enteric. Importantly, three variants that were considered in the previous classification have been eliminated, specifically mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, signet ring cell, and clear cell adenocarcinoma. This review presents the changes introduced by the current histological classification of lung adenocarcinoma and its prognostic implications
Mastectomized women's experiences and discourses: negotiations and challenges of breast cancer
This article investigates the mastectomized women's experiences and discourses about breast cancer, and also their strategies of negociation about the disease's challenges. 11 sessions of a support group for these women, carried out in a public service, were analyzed. The sessions were analyzed using thematic analysis and the dialogism and polyphony notions, within an historical and cultural approach that showed the opposition between the scientific knowledge (medical verdict) and the popular knowledge (possibility of cure), also the social stigma of the disease and the feminine gender . The group offered the setting for different knowledge to be updated and conveyed, reflecting a joint construction of the ideas about cancer and giving new meanings to facing and living with the disease
Public Conversations Group as Resource Against LGBT Violence
The increase in violence against LGBT people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, transgender and transgender) in Brazil encourages the adoption of preventive strategies, among them the Public Conversations Project (PCP), methodology for groups in conflicts. Charge order driven by Fermi-arc instability in Bi2201
The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been
hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these
materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling
microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to
observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in
momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave
vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but
match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability of the
Fermi arcs. Combined with earlier observations of electronic order in other
cuprate families, these findings suggest the existence of a generic
charge-ordered state in underdoped cuprates and uncover its intimate connection
to the pseudogap regime.Comment: A high resolution version can be found at

The symmetry of charge order in cuprates
Charge-ordered ground states permeate the phenomenology of 3d-based
transition metal oxides, and more generally represent a distinctive hallmark of
strongly-correlated states of matter. The recent discovery of charge order in
various cuprate families fueled new interest into the role played by this
incipient broken symmetry within the complex phase diagram of high-Tc
superconductors. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to resolve the main
characteristics of the charge-modulated state in two cuprate families: Bi2201
and YBCO. We detect no signatures of spatial modulations along the nodal
direction in Bi2201, thus clarifying the inter-unit-cell momentum-structure of
charge order. We also resolve the intra-unit-cell symmetry of the charge
ordered state, which is revealed to be best represented by a bond-order with
modulated charges on the O-2p orbitals and a prominent d-wave character. These
results provide insights on the microscopic description of charge order in
cuprates, and on its origin and interplay with superconductivity.Comment: A high-resolution version with supplementary material can be found
