    Bioelectronics for Amperometric Biosensors

    The Discrete-to-Integrated Electronics group (D2In), at the University of Barcelona, in partnership with the Bioelectronics and Nanobioengineering Group (SICBIO), is researching Smart Self-Powered Bio-Electronic Systems. Our interest is focused on the development of custom built electronic solutions for bio-electronics applications, from discrete devices to Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) solutions. The integration of medical and electronic technologies allows the development of biomedical devices able to diagnose and/or treat pathologies by detecting and/or monitoring pathogens, multiple ions, PH changes, and so on. Currently this integration enables advances in various areas such as microelectronics, microfluidics, microsensors and bio-compatible materials which open the door to developing human body Lab-on-a-Chip implantable devices, Pointof- Care in vitro devices, etc. In this chapter the main attention is focused on the design of instrumentation related to amperometrics biosensor: biopotentiostat amplifiers and lock-in amplifiers. A potentiostat is a useful tool in many fields of investigation and industry performing electrochemical trials [1], so the quantity and variety of them is very extensive. Since they can be used in studies and targets as different as the study of chemical metal conversions [2] or carcinogenic cells detection, neuronal activity detection or Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) recognition, their characteristics are very varied..

    Bioimpedance Technique for Point-of-Care Devices Relying on Disposable Label-Free Sensors – An Anemia Detection Case

    In this chapter, the development of a point-of-care device for bio-medical applications has been discussed. Our main objective is to research new electronic solutions for the detection, quantification, and monitoring of important biological agents in medical environments. The proposed systems and technologies rely on label-free disposable sensors, with portable electronics for user-friendly, low-cost solutions for medical disease diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. In this chapter, we will focus on a specific point-of-care device for cellular analysis, applied to the case of anemia detection and monitoring. The methodology used for anemia monitoring is based on hematocrit measurement directly from whole blood samples by means of impedance analysis. The designed device is based on straightforward electronic standards for low power consumption and low-cost disposable sensor for low volume samples, resulting in a robust and low power consumption device for portable monitoring purposes of anemia. The device has been validated through different whole blood samples to prove the response, effectiveness, and robustness to detect anemia

    Projecte: 2014PID-UB/076Actualment els estudiants d’Enginyeria Biomèdica realitzen pràctiques típiques d’electrònica en els seus estudis, similars a les que es realitzen en altres ensenyaments. Segons l’opinió dels estudiants aquest tipus de pràctiques són molt poc motivadores doncs, no veuen l’aplicació directa als seus estudis. La proposta és aplicar la metodologia basada en projectes per a la realització de les pràctiques en el grau d’Enginyeria Biomèdica en les dues assignatures: Electrònica Aplicada i "Biomedical Instruments and Equipment". D’aquesta forma els alumnes hauran de realitzar un projecte d’electrònica aplicat a l’Enginyeria Biomèdica. Els alumnes a més d’estar més motivats adquiriran competències en la realització d’un projecte, és a dir, mitjançant l’aprenentatge basat en projectes els estudiants podran adquirir competències professionals que són difícils de treballar amb metodologies convencionals. Algunes d’aquestes competències són les propostes per la UB com a competències transversals i els seran molt útils en el seu Treball Fi de Grau i en el seu futur desenvolupament professional

    High-efficient energy harvesting architecture for self-powered thermal-monitoring wireless sensor node based on a single thermoelectric generator

    In recent years, research on transducers and system architectures for self-powered devices has gained attention for their direct impact on the Internet of Things in terms of cost, power consumption, and environmental impact. The concept of a wireless sensor node that uses a single thermoelectric generator as a power source and as a temperature gradient sensor in an efficient and controlled manner is investigated. The purpose of the device is to collect temperature gradient data in data centres to enable the application of thermal-aware server load management algorithms. By using a maximum power point tracking algorithm, the operating point of the thermoelectric generator is kept under control while using its power-temperature transfer function to measure the temperature gradient. In this way, a more accurate measurement of the temperature gradient is achieved while harvesting energy with maximum efficiency. The results show the operation of the system through its different phases as well as demonstrate its ability to efficiently harvest energy from a temperature gradient while measuring it. With this system architecture, temperature gradients can be measured with a maximum error of 0.14 ∘ C and an efficiency of over 92% for values above 13 ∘ C and a single transducer.This work was supported by the research Grant PID2019-110142RB-C22 funded by MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033

    Combined dielectrophoresis and impedance systems for bacteria analysis in microfluidic on-chip platforms

    Bacteria concentration and detection is time-consuming in regular microbiology procedures aimed to facilitate the detection and analysis of these cells at very low concentrations. Traditional methods are effective but often require several days to complete. This scenario results in low bioanalytical and diagnostic methodologies with associated increased costs and complexity. In recent years, the exploitation of the intrinsic electrical properties of cells has emerged as an appealing alternative approach for concentrating and detecting bacteria. The combination of dielectrophoresis (DEP) and impedance analysis (IA) in microfluidic on-chip platforms could be key to develop rapid, accurate, portable, simple-to-use and cost-effective microfluidic devices with a promising impact in medicine, public health, agricultural, food control and environmental areas. The present document reviews recent DEP and IA combined approaches and the latest relevant improvements focusing on bacteria concentration and detection, including selectivity, sensitivity, detection time, and conductivity variation enhancements. Furthermore, this review analyses future trends and challenges which need to be addressed in order to successfully commercialize these platforms resulting in an adequate social return of public-funded investments

    The Toronto Mindfulness Scale and the State Mindfulness Scale: psychometric properties of the Spanish versions

    Objectives The Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS) and the State Mindfulness Scale (SMS) are two relevant self-report measures of state mindfulness. The purpose of this study was to examine the internal structure and to offer evidence of the reliability and validity of the Spanish versions of the TMS and SMS.MethodsData from six distinct non-clinical samples in Spain were obtained. They responded to the TMS (n = 119), SMS (n = 223), and measures of trait mindfulness, decentering, non-attachment, depression, anxiety, stress, positive and negative affect, self-criticism, and self-reassurance. The internal structure of the TMS and SMS was analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability, construct validity, and sensitivity to change analyses were performed.ResultsThe correlated two-factor structure (curiosity and decentering) was the best-fitting model for the TMS (CFI = 0.932; TLI = 0.913; RMSEA = 0.100 [0.077–0.123]; WRMR = 0.908). The bifactor structure (general factor, mindfulness of body, and mindfulness of mind) was the best-fitting model for the SMS (CFI = 0.961; TLI = 0.950; RMSEA = 0.096 [0.086–0.106]; WRMR = 0.993). Adequate reliability was found for both measures. The reliability of the SMS specific factors was very poor when controlling for the general factor. The patterns of correlations were mainly as expected and according to previous literature. The TMS and SMS have been able to detect state mindfulness changes after different meditation practices.ConclusionValidity evidence is provided to support the use of the TMS and SMS in Spanish populations, though the reliability of the SMS specific factors merit revision

    An Instantaneous low-cost point-of-care anemia detection device

    We present a small, compact and portable device for point-of-care instantaneous early detection of anemia. The method used is based on direct hematocrit measurement from whole blood samples by means of impedance analysis. This device consists of a custom electronic instrumentation and a plug-and-play disposable sensor. The designed electronics rely on straightforward standards for low power consumption, resulting in a robust and low consumption device making it completely mobile with a long battery life. Another approach could be powering the system based on other solutions like indoor solar cells, or applying energy-harvesting solutions in order to remove the batteries. The sensing system is based on a disposable low-cost label-free three gold electrode commercial sensor for 50 μL blood samples. The device capability for anemia detection has been validated through 24 blood samples, obtained from four hospitalized patients at Hospital Clínic. As a result, the response, effectiveness and robustness of the portable point-of-care device to detect anemia has been proved with an accuracy error of 2.83% and a mean coefficient of variation of 2.57% without any particular case above 5%

    Effect of Sperm Concentration and Storage Temperature on Goat Spermatozoa during Liquid Storage

    One of the problems with the refrigerated storage of spermatozoa in goats is the short shelf life. The study of the effect of the different storage conditions on the di erent sperm parameters could help to increase sperm survival. In this work, we studied the effect of temperature and sperm concentration during refrigerated storage on sperm motility, mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA fragmentation. We observed that refrigerated storage of semen doses reduced the majority of sperm quality parameters, however, sperm DNA fragmentation was not a ected. Storage at 5ºC preserved higher sperm motility than at 17ºC. Moreover, the reduction of sperm concentration below 500x10(6) sperm/mL did not seem to improve the quality of spermatozoa

    Diverse mutations and structural variations contribute to Notch signaling deregulation in paediatric T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma

    Background T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) is an aggressive neoplasm closely related to T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL). Despite their similarities, and contrary to T-ALL, studies on paediatric T-LBL are scarce and, therefore, its molecular landscape has not yet been fully elucidated. Thus, the aims of this study were to characterize the genetic and molecular heterogeneity of paediatric T-LBL and to evaluate novel molecular markers differentiating this entity from T-ALL. Procedure Thirty-three paediatric T-LBL patients were analyzed using an integrated approach, including targeted next-generation sequencing, RNA-sequencing transcriptome analysis and copy-number arrays. Results Copy number and mutational analyses allowed the detection of recurrent homozygous deletions of 9p/CDKN2A (78%), trisomy 20 (19%) and gains of 17q24-q25 (16%), as well as frequent mutations of NOTCH1 (62%), followed by the BCL11B (23%), WT1 (19%) and FBXW7, PHF6 and RPL10 genes (15%, respectively). This genetic profile did not differ from that described in T-ALL in terms of mutation incidence and global genomic complexity level, but unveiled virtually exclusive 17q25 gains and trisomy 20 in T-LBL. Additionally, we identified novel gene fusions in paediatric T-LBL, including NOTCH1-IKZF2, RNGTT-SNAP91 and DDX3X-MLLT10, the last being the only one previously described in T-ALL. Moreover, clinical correlations highlighted the presence of Notch pathway alterations as a factor related to favourable outcome. Conclusions In summary, the genomic landscape of paediatric T-LBL is similar to that observed in T-ALL, and Notch signaling pathway deregulation remains the cornerstone in its pathogenesis, including not only mutations but fusion genes targeting NOTCH1.We thank the centres of the Sociedad Espanola de Hematologia y Oncologia Pediatricas that submitted cases for consultation, to Noelia Garcia, Silvia Martin and Helena Suarez for their excellent technical assistance and to Nerea Dominguez for updating clinical data.     El síndrome depresivo que aparece durante la infancia o la adolescencia tiende a seguir un curso crónico, con alta probabilidad de permanecer en la edad adulta. Su sintomatología repercute en la vida diaria del menor y, en el caso de la depresión mayor, supone un riesgo para la aparición de conducta suicida. Dada la variabilidad de sus manifestaciones clínicas y las dificultades en el diagnóstico, se plantea la posible utilidad del uso de cuestionarios de cribado en la población infantil y adolescente, a partir de un análisis del rendimiento de estos y de la eficacia de las medidas terapéuticas actuales. El presente trabajo se ha dividido en dos partes, y al final de este se recopilan las recomendaciones de distintos grupos de trabajo y tras el análisis de la evidencia, las recomendaciones que el grupo PrevInfad ha consensuado para la consulta de los pediatras en Atención Primaria
