Resummed Cross Section for Jet Production at Hadron Colliders
We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the
single-inclusive jet cross section at hadron colliders. The corrections we
address arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction, when the incoming
partons have just enough energy to produce the high-transverse-momentum final
state. The structure of the resulting logarithmic corrections is known to
depend crucially on the treatment of the invariant mass of the produced jet at
threshold. We allow the jet to have a non-vanishing mass at threshold, which
most closely corresponds to the situation in experiment. Matching our results
to available semi-analytical next-to-leading-order calculations, we derive
resummed results valid to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present

Synthesis and Study of Olefin Metathesis Catalysts Supported by Redox-Switchable Diaminocarbene 3 Ferrocenophanes
A redox-switchable ligand, N,N'-dimethyldiaminocarbene[3]ferrocenophane (5), was synthesized and incorporated into a series of Ir- and Ru-based complexes. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses of (5) Ir(CO)(2)Cl (15) revealed that 5 displayed a Tolman electronic parameter value of 2050 cm(-1) in the neutral state and 2061 cm(-1) upon oxidation. Moreover, inspection of X-ray crystallography data recorded for (5) Ir(cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene)Cl (13) revealed that 5 was sterically less bulky (%V-Bur = 28.4) than other known diaminocarbene[3]ferrocenophanes, which facilitated the synthesis of (5)(PPh3)Cl2Ru-(3-phenylindenylid-1-ene) (18). Complex 18 exhibited quasi-reversible electrochemical processes at 0.79 and 0.98 V relative to SCE, which were assigned to the Fe and Ru centers in the complex, respectively, based on UV-vis and electron pair resonance spectroscopic measurements. Adding 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanoquinone over the course of a ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cis, cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene catalyzed by 18 ([monomer](0)/[18](0) = 2500) reduced the corresponding rate constant of the reaction by over an order of magnitude (pre-oxidation: k(obs) = 0.045 s(-1); post-oxidation: k(obs) = 0.0012 s(-1)). Subsequent reduction of the oxidized species using decamethylferrocene restored catalytic activity (post-reduction: k(obs) = up to 0.016 s(-1), depending on when the reductant was added). The difference in the polymerization rates was attributed to the relative donating ability of the redox-active ligand (i.e., strongly donating 5 versus weakly donating 5(+)) which ultimately governed the activity displayed by the corresponding catalyst.U. A Risk-Based Model Predictive Control Approach to Adaptive Interventions in Behavioral Health
This brief examines how control engineering and risk management techniques can be applied in the field of behavioral health through their use in the design and implementation of adaptive behavioral interventions. Adaptive interventions are gaining increasing acceptance as a means to improve prevention and treatment of chronic, relapsing disorders, such as abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, mental illness, and obesity. A risk-based model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is developed for a hypothetical intervention inspired by Fast Track, a real-life program whose long-term goal is the prevention of conduct disorders in at-risk children. The MPC-based algorithm decides on the appropriate frequency of counselor home visits, mentoring sessions, and the availability of after-school recreation activities by relying on a model that includes identifiable risks, their costs, and the cost/benefit assessment of mitigating actions. MPC is particularly suited for the problem because of its constraint-handling capabilities, and its ability to scale to interventions involving multiple tailoring variables. By systematically accounting for risks and adapting treatment components over time, an MPC approach as described in this brief can increase intervention effectiveness and adherence while reducing waste, resulting in advantages over conventional fixed treatment. A review of bovine cases consigned under veterinary certification to emergency and casualty slaughter in Ireland during 2006 to 2008
The emergency and casualty slaughter of cattle for human consumption (in cases where animals are likely to have suffered from acute or chronic pain, respectively) in Ireland requires that the animal is accompanied to the slaughterhouse by an official veterinary certificate (VC) completed on-farm by the owner's private veterinary practitioner (PVP). No published data is currently available in Ireland based on information provided in these VCs. In this paper, we present a review of bovine cases consigned under veterinary certification to emergency and casualty slaughter in Ireland during 2006 to 2008. All VCs during the years 2006 (where available), 2007 and 2008 were collected from four large Irish slaughterhouses. The data were computerized, and analysed using descriptive and spatial methods. In total, 1,255 VCs were enrolled into the study (1,255 study animals, 1,072 study herds), 798 (63.6%) and 457 (36.4%) animals were consigned to emergency and casualty slaughter, respectively. VCs were completed throughout the year, with consigned animals travelling a mean distance of 27.2 km from farm to slaughter. The time elapsed between veterinary certification and slaughter was greater than three days for 18.2% of all study animals. In 965 (76.9%) animals, the certified suspected disability related to the locomotory system, most commonly as a result of fractures. Among animals for which data were available, 11.9% were totally condemned at post-mortem. Seven Trends: The Transformation of the Teaching Force – Updated October 2018

Has the elementary and secondary teaching force changed in recent years? And, if so, how? Have the types and kinds of individuals going into teaching changed? Have the demographic characteristics of those working in classrooms altered? This report summarizes the results of an exploratory research project that investigated what trends and changes have, or have not, occurred in the teaching force over the past three decades.
Our main data source was the Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) and its supplement, the Teacher Follow-Up Survey (TFS) – collectively the largest and most comprehensive source of data on teachers available. SASS/TFS are collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Education. We took advantage of both the depth and duration of these data to explore what changes have taken place in the teaching force and teaching occupation over the three decades from 1987 to 2016.
The results show that the teaching force has been, and is, greatly changing; yet, even the most dramatic trends appear to have been little noticed by researchers, policy makers, and the public.

Assessment of Institutional and Personnel-Related Challenges Facing Educational Programme for the Mentally Challenged Persons at Kaimosi Special School, Kenya
The Mentally Challenged child (MC) can achieve a lot if the right environment and curriculum are designed for him/her. However, the realization of the desirable outcomes faces many challenges. The objective of the study was to examine institutional and personnel-related challenges facing education programs for the MC persons at Kaimosi Special School. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The theoretical framework was based on Context, Input and Process Product Approach (CIPP) model of evaluation. Stratified sampling, purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques were used to come up with the sample size. A total of 22 participants were selected comprising of one education officer, 3 administrators (2 male and 1 female), 8 teachers (5 female and 3 male) and 10 care givers. Questionnaires, interview schedules and document analysis were used to collect data. The study established that heavy workload, lack of motivation, poor staffing, high levels of stress, overcrowding in class, tiny classrooms, and inadequate resources were the most serious challenges facing Kaimosi Special School. It was recommended that the Special Education Department in the Ministry of Education should be strengthened with additional resources and trained personnel to handle issues of special education. Feasibility of near-unstable cavities for future gravitational wave detectors
Near-unstable cavities have been proposed as an enabling technology for
future gravitational wave detectors, as their compact structure and large beam
spots can reduce the coating thermal noise of the interferometer. We present a
tabletop experiment investigating the behaviour of an optical cavity as it is
parametrically pushed to geometrical instability. We report on the observed
degeneracies of the cavity's eigenmodes as the cavity becomes unstable and the
resonance conditions become hyper-sensitive to mirror surface imperfections. A
simple model of the cavity and precise measurements of the resonant frequencies
allow us to characterize the stability of the cavity and give an estimate of
the mirror astigmatism. The significance of these results for gravitational
wave detectors is discussed, and avenues for further research are suggested.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
The non-native plant Rosa multifl ora expresses shade avoidance traits under low light availability
PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Shade tolerance is a key trait promoting invasive plant performance in forest interiors. Rosa multifl ora is a problematic invasive shrub in the northeastern United States, occurring in edge habitats and encroaching into forests. Our objective was to evaluate the shade tolerance of R. multifl ora to assess how ecophysiological traits may facilitate its spread into forest interiors. METHODS: In the fi eld, we documented shrub and seed bank density, fecundity, phenology, and seasonal photosynthetic rates of R. multifl ora in contrasting light environments. In the greenhouse, we exposed seedlings to simulated canopy treatments by altering spectral quantity and quality, mimicking habitats ranging from open fi elds to forest interiors.
KEY RESULTS: In the fi eld, shrub density and fecundity of R. multifl ora sharply increased with light availability. However, no diff erences were observed between forest edge and interior seed banks. Rosa multifl ora initiated leaf growth earlier and retained leaves longer than canopy vegetation and tended to have higher photosynthetic rates in spring and fall. In the greenhouse, plants displayed shade-avoidance traits, decreasing relative growth rate and reducing branching, while increasing elongation and showing no change in light response curve parameters.
CONCLUSIONS: In deciduous forest understories, R. multifl ora appears to make use of a lengthened growing season in spring and fall, and therefore, substantial growth and spread through intact forests appears dependent on canopy gaps. Management should focus on reducing edge populations to reduce spread into the interior and on monitoring newly created canopy gaps
Telemedicine coverage for post-operative ICU patients.
Introduction There is an increased demand for intensive care unit (ICU) beds. We sought to determine if we could create a safe surge capacity model to increase ICU capacity by treating ICU patients in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) utilizing a collaborative model between an ICU service and a telemedicine service during peak ICU bed demand. Methods We evaluated patients managed by the surgical critical care service in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) compared to patients managed in the virtual intensive care unit (VICU) located within the PACU. A retrospective review of all patients seen by the surgical critical care service from January 1st 2008 to July 31st 2011 was conducted at an urban, academic, tertiary centre and level 1 trauma centre. Results Compared to the SICU group ( n = 6652), patients in the VICU group ( n = 1037) were slightly older (median age 60 (IQR 47-69) versus 58 (IQR 44-70) years, p = 0.002) and had lower acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II scores (median 10 (IQR 7-14) versus 15 (IQR 11-21), p \u3c 0.001). The average amount of time patients spent in the VICU was 13.7 + /-9.6 hours. In the VICU group, 750 (72%) of patients were able to be transferred directly to the floor; 287 (28%) required subsequent admission to the surgical intensive care unit. All patients in the VICU group were alive upon transfer out of the PACU while mortality in the surgical intensive unit cohort was 5.5%. Discussion A collaborative care model between a surgical critical care service and a telemedicine ICU service may safely provide surge capacity during peak periods of ICU bed demand.
