    Mapping the Evolution of Optically-Generated Rotational Wavepackets in a Room Temperature Ensemble of D2_2

    A coherent superposition of rotational states in D2_2 has been excited by nonresonant ultrafast (12 femtosecond) intense (2 ×\times 1014^{14} Wcm−2^{-2}) 800 nm laser pulses leading to impulsive dynamic alignment. Field-free evolution of this rotational wavepacket has been mapped to high temporal resolution by a time-delayed pulse, initiating rapid double ionization, which is highly sensitive to the angle of orientation of the molecular axis with respect to the polarization direction, θ\theta. The detailed fractional revivals of the neutral D2_2 wavepacket as a function of θ\theta and evolution time have been observed and modelled theoretically.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Acid-induced Unfolding of the Amino-terminal Domains of the Lethal and Edema Factors of Anthrax Toxin

    The two enzymatic components of anthrax toxin, lethal factor (LF) and edema factor (EF), are transported to the cytosol of mammalian cells by the third component, protective antigen (PA). A heptameric form of PA binds LF and/or EF and, under the acidic conditions encountered in endosomes, generates a membrane-spanning pore that is thought to serve as a passageway for these enzymes to enter the cytosol. The pore contains a 14-stranded transmembrane b-barrel that is too narrow to accommodate a fully folded protein, necessitating that LF and EF unfold, at least partly, in order to pass. Here, we describe the pH-dependence of the unfolding of LF N and EF N , the 30 kDa N-terminal PA-binding domains, and minimal translocatable units, of LF and EF. Equilibrium chemical denaturation studies using fluorescence and circular dichroism spectroscopy show that each protein unfolds via a fourstate mechanism: N4I4J4U. The acid-induced N/I transition occurs within the pH range of the endosome (pH 5-6). The I state predominates at lower pH values, and the J and U states are populated significantly only in the presence of denaturant. The I state is compact and has characteristics of a molten globule, as shown by its retention of significant secondary structure and its ability to bind an apolar fluorophore. The N/I transition leads to an overall 60% increase in buried surface area exposure. The J state is expanded significantly and has diminished secondary structure content. We analyze the different protonation states of LF N and EF N in terms of a linked equilibrium proton binding model and discuss the implications of our findings for the mechanism of acidic pH-induced translocation of anthrax toxin. Finally, analysis of the structure of the transmembrane b-barrel of PA shows that it can accommodate a-helix, and we suggest that the steric constraints and composition of the lumen may promote a-helix formation

    Atomic excitation during recollision-free ultrafast multi-electron tunnel ionization

    Modern intense ultrafast pulsed lasers generate an electric field of sufficient strength to permit tunnel ionization of the valence electrons in atoms. This process is usually treated as a rapid succession of isolated events, in which the states of the remaining electrons are neglected. Such electronic interactions are predicted to be weak, the exception being recollision excitation and ionization caused by linearly-polarized radiation. In contrast, it has recently been suggested that intense field ionization may be accompanied by a two-stage `shake-up' reaction. Here we report a unique combination of experimental techniques that enables us to accurately measure the tunnel ionization probability for argon exposed to 50 femtosecond laser pulses. Most significantly for the current study, this measurement is independent of the optical focal geometry, equivalent to a homogenous electric field. Furthermore, circularly-polarized radiation negates recollision. The present measurements indicate that tunnel ionization results in simultaneous excitation of one or more remaining electrons through shake-up. From an atomic physics standpoint, it may be possible to induce ionization from specific states, and will influence the development of coherent attosecond XUV radiation sources. Such pulses have vital scientific and economic potential in areas such as high-resolution imaging of in-vivo cells and nanoscale XUV lithography.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, original format as accepted by Nature Physic

    Qatar-2: A K dwarf orbited by a transiting hot Jupiter and a more massive companion in an outer orbit

    We report the discovery and initial characterization of Qatar-2b, a hot Jupiter transiting a V = 13.3 mag K dwarf in a circular orbit with a short period, P_ b = 1.34 days. The mass and radius of Qatar-2b are M_p = 2.49 M_j and R_p = 1.14 R_j, respectively. Radial-velocity monitoring of Qatar-2 over a span of 153 days revealed the presence of a second companion in an outer orbit. The Systemic Console yielded plausible orbits for the outer companion, with periods on the order of a year and a companion mass of at least several M_j. Thus Qatar-2 joins the short but growing list of systems with a transiting hot Jupiter and an outer companion with a much longer period. This system architecture is in sharp contrast to that found by Kepler for multi-transiting systems, which are dominated by objects smaller than Neptune, usually with tightly spaced orbits that must be nearly coplanar

    The extraordinary linear polarisation structure of the southern Centaurus A lobe revealed by ASKAP

    We present observations of linear polarisation in the southern radio lobe of Centaurus A, conducted during commissioning of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. We used 16 antennas to observe a 30 square degree region in a single 12 hour pointing over a 240 MHz band centred on 913 MHz. Our observations achieve an angular resolution of 26×3326\times33 arcseconds (480 parsecs), a maximum recoverable angular scale of 30 arcminutes, and a full-band sensitivity of 85 \muupJy beam−1^{-1}. The resulting maps of polarisation and Faraday rotation are amongst the most detailed ever made for radio lobes, with of order 105^5 resolution elements covering the source. We describe several as-yet unreported observational features of the lobe, including its detailed peak Faraday depth structure, and intricate networks of depolarised filaments. These results demonstrate the exciting capabilities of ASKAP for widefield radio polarimetry.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Accepted in "The Power of Faraday Tomography" special issue of Galaxie

    A systematic review of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer education and peer support in prisons.

    BACKGROUND: Prisoners experience significantly worse health than the general population. This review examines the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of peer interventions in prison settings. METHODS: A mixed methods systematic review of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies, including qualitative and quantitative synthesis was conducted. In addition to grey literature identified and searches of websites, nineteen electronic databases were searched from 1985 to 2012. Study selection criteria were: Population: Prisoners resident in adult prisons and children resident in Young Offender Institutions (YOIs). INTERVENTION: Peer-based interventions Comparators: Review questions 3 and 4 compared peer and professionally led approaches. OUTCOMES: Prisoner health or determinants of health; organisational/ process outcomes; views of prison populations. STUDY DESIGNS: Quantitative, qualitative and mixed method evaluations. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies were included in the effectiveness review and one study in the cost-effectiveness review; most were of poor methodological quality. Evidence suggested that peer education interventions are effective at reducing risky behaviours, and that peer support services are acceptable within the prison environment and have a positive effect on recipients, practically or emotionally. Consistent evidence from many, predominantly qualitative, studies, suggested that being a peer deliverer was associated with positive effects. There was little evidence on cost-effectiveness of peer-based interventions. CONCLUSIONS: There is consistent evidence from a large number of studies that being a peer worker is associated with positive health; peer support services are also an acceptable source of help within the prison environment and can have a positive effect on recipients.
