Crucian carp heart performance during anoxia and acidosis

Karuss (Carassius carassius L.) innehar den unike evnen blandt vertebrater å opprettholde hjerte kapasiteten på normoksisk nivå under langvarig eksponering til anoxia. Denne master oppgaven undersøker hypotesen om at dette fenomenet er mulig på grunnet at dette hjertet muligens aldrig utsettes for en ekstraellulær pH under 7.4 som tilskrives fiskens eksklusive egenskap til å konvertere laktat og H+ ioner til etanol. Prestasjonen til isolerte spontant kontraherende hjerte preparasjoner fra karuss ble målt under exponering til 100 min av anoxia ved pH 7.8 og gradert acidose (mellom pH 7.8 og 7.0) under både normoksiske og anoksiske forhold ved 6.5 grader. Som forventet avdekket resultatet at karuss hjertets prestasjon under anoksia påvirkes ved redusert pH under normalt nivået anoksisk nivå over 7.4. I tillegg ble disse isolerte hjertenes evne til å tilfriskne etter 40 min anoxisk eksponering under ulike pH (7.8, 7.4 og 7.0) undersøkt i både karuss og i anoksisk intolerante koi karper (Cyprinus carpio L.) De sistnevnte hjerter viste seg å være irreversibelt ødelagte av anoksisk eksponering til tross for at hjerteprestasjonen utviste en lignende anoksisk depresjon som karuss hjerter. Karuss hjerte har åpenbart en medfødt evne til å tolerere anoksia, hvilket koi karpe hjertet mangler, en evne som mest sannsynlig reflekterer det at karuss er evolvert til å tåle langtids eksponering til anoksia støttet av sin evne til å produsere etanol

Awareness and use of intertrochanteric osteotomies in current clinical practice. An international survey

Current literature shows that intertrochanteric osteotomies can produce excellent results in selected hip disorders in specific groups of patients. However, it appears that this surgical option is considered an historical one that has no role to play in modern practice. In order to examine current awareness of and views on intertrochanteric osteotomies among international hip surgeons, an online survey was carried out. The survey consisted of a set of questions regarding current clinical practice and awareness of osteotomies. The second part of the survey consisted of five clinical cases and sought to elicit views on preoperative radiological investigations and preferred (surgical) treatments. The results of our survey showed that most of these experts believe that intertrochanteric osteotomies should still be performed in selected cases. Only 56% perform intertrochanteric osteotomies themselves and of those, only 11% perform more than five per year. The responses to the cases show that about 30–40% recommend intertrochanteric osteotomies in young symptomatic patients. This survey shows that the role of intertrochanteric osteotomies is declining in clinical practice

Research report on consumer behavior for Curbside Chronicle readers

The Curbside Chronicle is a street paper serving Oklahoma City. By developing magazines and selling them at cost to vendors who then sell to consumers, they encourage the residents of Oklahoma City to interact and engage with a group of individuals commonly thought of as invisible in the public eye. One key drawback, however, is the difficulty which exists in evaluating the awareness, purchasing behaviors, and satisfaction of existing behaviors. This report seeks to highlight key takeaways from a study conducted in March of 2020 on existing Curbside Chronicle readers via a survey distributed both online and in text

Kvinnliga relationer och samtal

Studier av kvinnliga relationer har tidigare präglats av mor- och dotterrelationens betydelse för kvinnors relations- och samtalsinriktning. Från ett gensuperspektiv anses normerande maktstrukturer spela stor roll för hur systerskapet utformas. Att kvinnor umgås i mindre grupper och samtalar mer än män om relationer kan tolkas som en funktion av genussystemets uppbyggnad. Syftet med studien var således att studera samtalets betydelse för kvinnors sätt att formera vänskapsrelationer och hur det påverkar kvinnors gruppdynamik. För undersökningen gjordes åtta kvalitativa djupintervjuer som analyserades med hjälp av induktiv tematisk analys. Resultatet visar att de sociala aktiviteterna präglas av samtal. Samtalen bör vara jämlika, öppna och kontinuerliga för att garantera en lojal nära vänskapsrelation som signalerar trygghet. Uteblivna samtal kan motsvarande tolkas som ett utanförsskap. Samtalets utformning kan i gruppdynamiska situationer användas som ett konkurrensmedel. Samtalet kan även användas för att sanktionera illojalt beteende i syfte att upprätta gruppkänsla
