Neutrinos from supernovae: experimental status and perspectives
I discuss the state of the art in the search for neutrinos from galactic
stellar collapses and the future perspectives of this field. The implications
for the neutrino physics of a high statistics supernova neutrino burst
detection by the network of detectors operating around the world are also

Positioning systems in Minkowski space-time: from emission to inertial coordinates
The coordinate transformation between emission coordinates and inertial
coordinates in Minkowski space-time is obtained for arbitrary configurations of
the emitters. It appears that a positioning system always generates two
different coordinate domains, namely, the front and the back emission
coordinate domains. For both domains, the corresponding covariant expression of
the transformation is explicitly given in terms of the emitter world-lines.
This task requires the notion of orientation of an emitter configuration. The
orientation is shown to be computable from the emission coordinates for the
users of a `central' region of the front emission coordinate domain. Other
space-time regions associated with the emission coordinates are also outlined.Comment: 20 pages; 1 figur
On the degrees of freedom of a semi-Riemannian metric
A semi-Riemannian metric in a n-manifold has n(n-1)/2 degrees of freedom,
i.e. as many as the number of components of a differential 2-form. We prove

Real null coframes in general relativity and GPS type coordinates
Based on work of Derrick, Coll, and Morales, we define a `symmetric' null
coframe with {\it four real null covectors}. We show that this coframe is

Some results on homoclinic and heteroclinic connections in planar systems
Consider a family of planar systems depending on two parameters and
having at most one limit cycle. Assume that the limit cycle disappears at some
homoclinic (or heteroclinic) connection when We present a method
that allows to obtain a sequence of explicit algebraic lower and upper bounds
for the bifurcation set The method is applied to two quadratic
families, one of them is the well-known Bogdanov-Takens system. One of the
results that we obtain for this system is the bifurcation curve for small
values of , given by . We obtain
the new three terms from purely algebraic calculations, without evaluating
Melnikov functions
A robust SNP barcode for typing Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains
Strain-specific genomic diversity in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) is an important factor in pathogenesis that may affect virulence, transmissibility, host response and emergence of drug resistance. Several systems have been proposed to classify MTBC strains into distinct lineages and families. Here, we investigate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as robust (stable) markers of genetic variation for phylogenetic analysis. We identify ~92k SNP across a global collection of 1,601 genomes. The SNP-based phylogeny is consistent with the gold-standard regions of difference (RD) classification system. Of the ~7k strain-specific SNPs identified, 62 markers are proposed to discriminate known circulating strains. This SNP-based barcode is the first to cover all main lineages, and classifies a greater number of sublineages than current alternatives. It may be used to classify clinical isolates to evaluate tools to control the disease, including therapeutics and vaccines whose effectiveness may vary by strain type
A Note on Dressed S-Matrices in Models with Long-Range Interactions
The {\sl dressed} Scattering matrix describing scattering of quasiparticles
in various models with long-range interactions is evaluated by means of
Korepin's method\upref vek1/. For models with -interactions
the S-matrix is found to be a momentum-independent phase, which clearly
demonstrates the ideal gas character of the quasiparticles in such models. We
then determine S-matrices for some models with -interaction
and find them to be in general nontrivial. For the -limit of the
-interaction we recover trivial S-matrices, thus exhibiting
a crossover from interacting to noninteracting quasiparticles. The relation of

Genomic surveillance reveals low prevalence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the East of England
Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is an emerging problem in many parts of the world. LA-MRSA has been isolated previously from animals and humans in the United Kingdom (UK), but the prevalence is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and to describe the molecular epidemiology of LA-MRSA isolated in the East of England (broadly Cambridge and the surrounding area). We accessed whole genome sequence data for 2,283 MRSA isolates from 1,465 people identified during a 12-month prospective study between 2012 and 2013 conducted in the East of England, United Kingdom. This laboratory serves four hospitals and 75 general practices. We screened the collection for multilocus sequence types (STs) and for host specific resistance and virulence factors previously associated with LA-MRSA. We identified 13 putative LA-MRSA isolates from 12 individuals, giving an estimated prevalence of 0.82% (95% CI 0.47% to 1.43%). Twelve isolates were mecC-MRSA (ten CC130, one ST425 and one ST1943) and single isolate was ST398. Our data demonstrate a low burden of LA-MRSA in the East of England, but the detection of mecC-MRSA and ST398 indicates the need for vigilance. Null cone preserving maps, causal tensors and algebraic Rainich theory
A rank-n tensor on a Lorentzian manifold V whose contraction with n arbitrary
causal future directed vectors is non-negative is said to have the dominant
property. These tensors, up to sign, are called causal tensors, and we
determine their general properties in dimension N. We prove that rank-2 tensors
which map the null cone on itself are causal. It is known that, to any tensor A
on V there is a corresponding ``superenergy'' (s-e) tensor T{A} which always
has the dominant property. We prove that, conversely, any symmetric rank-2
tensor with the dominant property can be written in a canonical way as a sum of
N s-e tensors of simple forms. We show that the square of any rank-2 s-e tensor
is proportional to the metric if N<5, and that this holds for the s-e tensor of
any simple form for arbitrary N. Conversely, we prove that any symmetric rank-2
tensor T whose square is proportional to the metric must be, up to sign, the
s-e of a simple p-form, and that the trace of T determines the rank p of the
form. This generalises, both with respect to N and the rank p, the classical
algebraic Rainich conditions, which are necessary and sufficient conditions for
a metric to originate in some physical field, and has a geometric
interpretation: the set of s-e tensors of simple forms is precisely the set of
tensors which preserve the null cone and its time orientation. It also means
that all involutory Lorentz transformations (LT) can be represented as s-e
tensors of simple forms, and that any rank-2 s-e tensor is the sum of at most N
conformally involutory LT. Non-symmetric null cone preserving maps are shown to
have a causal symmetric part and are classified according to the null
eigenvectors of the skew-symmetric part. We thus obtain a complete

On the Papapetrou field in vacuum
In this paper we study the electromagnetic fields generated by a Killing
vector field in vacuum space-times (Papapetrou fields). The motivation of this
work is to provide new tools for the resolution of Maxwell's equations as well
as for the search, characterization, and study of exact solutions of Einstein's
equations. The first part of this paper is devoted to an algebraic study in
which we give an explicit and covariant procedure to construct the principal
null directions of a Papapetrou field. In the second part, we focus on the main
differential properties of the principal directions, studying when they are
geodesic, and in that case we compute their associated optical scalars. With
this information we get the conditions that a principal direction of the
Papapetrou field must satisfy in order to be aligned with a multiple principal
direction of the Weyl tensor in the case of algebraically special vacuum
space-times. Finally, we illustrate this study using the Kerr, Kasner and pp
