Helping You Help Me: The Role of Diagnostic (In)congruence in the Helping Process within Organizations
Through an inductive, multi-method field study at a major design firm, we investigated the helping process in project work and how that process affects the success of a helping episode, as perceived by help-givers and/or -receivers. We used daily diary entries and weekly interviews from four project teams, and a separate sample of critical incident interviews, to induce process models of successful and unsuccessful helping episodes. We found that, in unsuccessful episodes, help-givers and -receivers maintained incongruent expectations and project understandings throughout the episode, which we call diagnostic incongruence. In contrast, the parties in successful episodes engaged in aligning practices that fostered shared expectations and project understandings (i.e., diagnostic congruence). Importantly, aligning practices in successful episodes occurred before or at the beginning of episodes. We also found that peopleās assessments of unsuccessful episodes were often marked by intense emotionality, which sometimes led them to disregard whether the helping resulted in instrumental progress. Understanding the Changing Cultural Value of the BBC World Service and the British Council
This project investigated the changing cultural value of the BBC World Service (WS) and the British Council (BC) and how their cultural value can be assessed and measured. For eight decades, these organisations have been the face and voice of Britain overseas. Our research found that their attraction and influence abroad remains strong, but is on the wane, reflecting the UKās declining economic and political significance on the world stage.
Among the key findings of our historical and contemporary research: Cultural value is the catalyst of all aspects of value at WS and BC, founded on their capacity to act as transcultural intermediaries, fostering international understanding, and setting benchmarks in global standards for journalism and cultural relations work. Cultural value is relational, never independent of political and economic value. It is perspectival: audiences trust the quality and credibility of outputs; high professional standards and prestige benefit staff; funders appreciate the diplomatic and soft power assets. Cultural value accrues slowly over time but can be quickly lost.
Social media afford new ways of connecting, informing and engaging citizens at home and abroad. Our case studies analysing the uses of Twitter and Facebook by BC and WS around global media events underscore the so far limited role of social media in democratising participation and promoting intercultural dialogue.
We developed an innovative, theoretically grounded and empirically informed Cultural Value Model (CVM). This is an innovative device for conceptualising, analysing and assessing value in a multidimensional, composite, visual way. The CVM is designed for planning, monitoring and evaluating projects and organisations over time, alongside existing performance indicators and impact measures. It is currently being tested and developed on further projects at WS and BC as well as at the Swedish Institute
Targeted SERS nanosensors measure physicochemical gradients and free energy changes in live 3D tumor spheroids.
Use of multicellular tumor spheroids (MTS) to investigate therapies has gained impetus because they have potential to mimic factors including zonation, hypoxia and drug-resistance. However, analysis remains difficult and often destroys 3D integrity. Here we report an optical technique using targeted nanosensors that allows in situ 3D mapping of redox potential gradients whilst retaining MTS morphology and function. The magnitude of the redox potential gradient can be quantified as a free energy difference (ĪG) and used as a measurement of MTS viability. We found that by delivering different doses of radiotherapy to MTS we could correlate loss of ĪG with increasing therapeutic dose. In addition, we found that resistance to drug therapy was indicated by an increase in ĪG. This robust and reproducible technique allows interrogation of an in vitro tumor-model's bioenergetic response to therapy, indicating its potential as a tool for therapy development.Leverhulme Trust (Grant ID: RPG-2012-680), Jamie King Cancer Research FundThis is the final version of the article. The Subluminous Supernova 2007qd: A Missing Link in a Family of Low-Luminosity Type Ia Supernovae
We present multi-band photometry and multi-epoch spectroscopy of the peculiar
Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2007qd, discovered by the SDSS-II Supernova Survey.
It possesses physical properties intermediate to those of the peculiar SN
2002cx and the extremely low-luminosity SN 2008ha. Optical photometry indicates
that it had an extraordinarily fast rise time of <= 10 days and a peak absolute
B magnitude of -15.4 +/- 0.2 at most, making it one of the most subluminous SN
Ia ever observed. Follow-up spectroscopy of SN 2007qd near maximum brightness
unambiguously shows the presence of intermediate-mass elements which are likely
caused by carbon/oxygen nuclear burning. Near maximum brightness, SN 2007qd had
a photospheric velocity of only 2800 km/s, similar to that of SN 2008ha but
about 4000 and 7000 km/s less than that of SN 2002cx and normal SN Ia,
respectively. We show that the peak luminosities of SN 2002cx-like objects are
highly correlated with both their light-curve stretch and photospheric
velocities. Its strong apparent connection to other SN 2002cx-like events
suggests that SN 2007qd is also a pure deflagration of a white dwarf, although
other mechanisms cannot be ruled out. It may be a critical link between SN

Formal Verification of Autonomous Vehicle Platooning
The coordination of multiple autonomous vehicles into convoys or platoons is expected on our highways in the near future. However, before such platoons can be deployed, the new autonomous behaviors of the vehicles in these platoons must be certified. An appropriate representation for vehicle platooning is as a multi-agent system in which each agent captures the "autonomous decisions" carried out by each vehicle. In order to ensure that these autonomous decision-making agents in vehicle platoons never violate safety requirements, we use formal verification. However, as the formal verification technique used to verify the agent code does not scale to the full system and as the global verification technique does not capture the essential verification of autonomous behavior, we use a combination of the two approaches. This mixed strategy allows us to verify safety requirements not only of a model of the system, but of the actual agent code used to program the autonomous vehicles
Three Novel Pigmentation Mutants Generated by Genome-Wide Random ENU Mutagenesis in the Mouse
Three mutant mice with pigmentation phenotypes were recovered from a genomewide
random mouse chemical mutagenesis study. White toes (Whto; MGI:1861986),
Belly spot and white toes (Bswt; MGI:2152776) and Dark footpads 2 (Dfp2;
MGI:1861991) were identified following visual inspection of progeny from a male
exposed to the point mutagen ethylnitrosourea (ENU). In order to rapidly localize
the causative mutations, genome-wide linkage scans were performed on pooled
DNA samples from backcross animals for each mutant line. Whto was mapped to
proximal mouse chromosome (Mmu) 7 between Cen (the centromere) and D7Mit112
(8.0 cM from the centromere), Bswt was mapped to centric Mmul between D1Mit214
(32.1 cM) and D1Mit480 (32.8 cM) and Dfp2 was mapped to proximalMmu4 between
Cen and D4Mit18 (5.2 cM). Whto, Bswt and Dfp2 may provide novel starting
points in furthering the elucidation of genetic and biochemical pathways relevant
to pigmentation and associated biological processes
