A New Measurement of the Average FUV Extinction Curve
We have measured the extinction curve in the far-ultraviolet wavelength
region of (900 -- 1200 A) using spectra obtained with the Berkeley EUV/FUV
spectrometer during the ORFEUS-I and the ORFEUS-II missions in 1993 and 1996.
From the complete sample of early-type stars observed during these missions,
we have selected pairs of stars with the same spectral type but different
reddenings to measure the differential FUV extinction. We model the effects of
molecular hydrogen absorption and exclude affected regions of the spectrum to
determine the extinction from dust alone. We minimize errors from inaccuracies
in the cataloged spectral types of the stars by making our own determinations
of spectral types based on their IUE spectra. We find substantial scatter in
the curves of individual star pairs and present a detailed examination of the
uncertainties and their effects on each extinction curve. We find that, given
the potentially large uncertainties inherent in using the pair method at FUV
wavelengths, a careful analysis of measurement uncertainties is critical to
assessing the true dust extinction. We present a new measurement of the average
far-ultraviolet extinction curve to the Lyman limit; our new measurement is
consistent with an extrapolation of the standard extinction curve of Savage &

GIADA performance during Rosetta mission scientific operations at comet 67P
The Grain Impact Analyser and Dust Accumulator (GIADA) instrument onboard Rosetta studied the dust environment of comet 67P/ChuryumovâGerasimenko from 3.7 au inbound, through perihelion, to 3.8 au outbound, measuring the dust flow and the dynamic properties of individual particles. GIADA is composed of three subsystems: 1) Grain Detection System (GDS); 2) Impact Sensor (IS); and 3) Micro-Balances System (MBS). Monitoring the subsystemsâ performance during operations is an important element for the correct calibration of scientific measurements. In this paper, we analyse the GIADA inflight calibration data obtained by internal calibration devices for the three subsystems during the period from 1 August 2014 to 31 October 2015. The calibration data testify a nominal behaviour of the instrument during these fifteen months of mission; the only exception is a minor loss of sensitivity for one of the two GDS receivers, attributed to dust contamination
Applied Cyberpsychology: Military and Defence Applications
Virtual environments are synthetic computer simulations that represent activities at a high degree of realism. Virtual environments have numerous applications for military and defence purposes, ranging from allowing personnel to experience realistic, high-pressure situations with a sense of presence, but in the absence of real world risk, to modelling threats to national and international infrastructure to improve resilience. Emerging opportunities also exist for communication and intelligence gathering, exploring on-line social cognition and group behaviour, and understanding how to mitigate the negative effects of combat-related stress disorders, for example. In this chapter we introduce psychological theory and contemporary cyberpsychology research, and offer an albeit very brief introduction to the rapidly developing application of technology to better understand human behaviour and facilitate performance for military and defence purposes
New Interstellar Dust Models Consistent with Extinction, Emission, and Abundance Constraints
We present new interstellar dust models which have been derived by
simultaneously fitting the far-ultraviolet to near-infrared extinction, the
diffuse infrared (IR) emission and, unlike previous models, the elemental
abundance constraints on the dust for different interstellar medium abundances,
including solar, F and G star, and B star abundances. The fitting problem is a
typical ill-posed inversion problem, in which the grain size distribution is
the unknown, which we solve by using the method of regularization. The dust
model contains various components: PAHs, bare silicate, graphite, and amorphous
carbon particles, as well as composite particles containing silicate, organic
refractory material, water ice, and voids. The optical properties of these
components were calculated using physical optical constants. As a special case,
we reproduce the Li & Draine (2001) results, however their model requires an
excessive amount of silicon, magnesium, and iron to be locked up in dust: about
50 ppm (atoms per million of H atoms), significantly more than the upper limit
imposed by solar abundances of these elements, about 34, 35, and 28 ppm,
respectively. A major conclusion of this paper is that there is no unique
interstellar dust model that simultaneously fits the observed extinction,

A meaningful expansion around detailed balance
We consider Markovian dynamics modeling open mesoscopic systems which are
driven away from detailed balance by a nonconservative force. A systematic
expansion is obtained of the stationary distribution around an equilibrium
reference, in orders of the nonequilibrium forcing. The first order around
equilibrium has been known since the work of McLennan (1959), and involves the
transient irreversible entropy flux. The expansion generalizes the McLennan
formula to higher orders, complementing the entropy flux with the dynamical
activity. The latter is more kinetic than thermodynamic and is a possible
realization of Landauer's insight (1975) that, for nonequilibrium, the relative
occupation of states also depends on the noise along possible escape routes. In
that way nonlinear response around equilibrium can be meaningfully discussed in
terms of two main quantities only, the entropy flux and the dynamical activity.
The expansion makes mathematical sense as shown in the simplest cases from

The dust-to-ices ratio in comets and Kuiper belt objects
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P hereinafter) is characterized by a dust transfer from the southern hemi-nucleus to the night-side northern dust deposits, which constrains the dust-to-ices mass ratio inside the nucleus to values a factor of 2 larger than that provided by the lost mass of gas and non-volatiles. This applies to all comets because the gas density in all night comae cannot prevent the dust fallback. Taking into account Grain Impact Analyser and Dust Accumulator (GIADA) data collected during the entire Rosetta mission, we update the average dust bulk density to ÏD=785 +520/â115 kg m that, coupled to the 67P nucleus bulk density, confirms an average dust-to-ices mass ratio ÎŽ = 7.5 inside 67P. The improved dust densities are consistent with a mixture of (20 ± 8) per cent of ices, (4 ± 1) per cent of Fe sulphides, (22 ± 2) per cent of silicates and (54 ± 5) per cent of hydrocarbons, on average volume abundances. These values correspond to solar chemical abundances, as suggested by the elemental C/Fe ratio observed in 67P. The ice content in 67P matches that inferred in Kuiper belt objects, (20 ± 12) per cent on average volume abundance and suggests a water content in all trans-Neptunian objects lower than in CI chondrites. The 67P icy pebbles and the dust collected by GIADA have a microporosity of (49 ± 5) and (59 ± 8) per cent, respectively
Is minimally-invasive spinal surgery a reliable treatment option in symptomatic spinal metastasis?
OBJECTIVE: Up to 70% of patients with cancer are likely to develop spine metastasis. Radiation therapy is the standard of care for painful spinal metastases in absence of unstable or impending fractures. More frequently these patients require open palliative surgery for pain, vertebral collapse and neurological deficits. Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) techniques using percutaneous pedicle screw fixation may be considered as an alternative to open surgery in selected cases. MISS techniques are thought to be associated with fewer tissues damages resulting in early pain relief, they also allow for early mobilization and optimization of function. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2011 to 2018, 52 patients affected by spinal metastasis were treated with MISS techniques in Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute of Bologna and in Cisanello Hospital of Pisa, Italy. All patients underwent percutaneous pedicle screw fixations (PPSF) coupled with mini-decompressions in case it was required by spinal cord compressions. All patients were evaluated pre and post-operatively by Frenkel classification and VAS scores. RESULTS: Mean follow-up time was 19,4 months. Preoperatively, Frankel scores were E in 37 patients, D3 in 6 patients, D2 in 3 cases, D1 in 3 patients, B in one patient and C in two. The Frankel score improved in 10 patients, remained stable in 40 patients and worsened in two patients. Preoperatively, the mean VAS score in 29 patients treated with PPSF procedure with spinal decompression was 7, while postoperatively, it became 5. In 23 patients who underwent only PPSF procedure without spinal decompression mean VAS score was 5, postoperatively it became 3. CONCLUSIONS: In selected cases, MISS surgeries may be considered as a valid alternative to open surgery. Although the efficacy of PPSF has been well documented in trauma or degenerative spine surgery, there is not sufficient literature about MISS techniques in spinal metastasis and further studies are needed to elucidate the most appropriate patient in which this approach could represent the gold standard of treatment
UBVJHKLM photometry and modeling of R Coronae Borealis
We present the results of UBVJHKLM photometry of R CrB spanning the period
from 1976 to 2001. Studies of the optical light curve have shown no evidence of
any stable harmonics in the variations of the stellar emission. In the L band
we found semi-regular oscillations with the two main periods of ~3.3 yr and
11.9 yr and the full amplitude of ~0.8 mag and ~0.6 mag, respectively. The
colors of the warm dust shell (resolved by Ohnaka et al. 2001) are found to be
remarkably stable in contrast to its brightness. This indicates that the inner
radius is a constant, time-independent characteristic of the dust shell. The
observed behavior of the IR light curve is mainly caused by the variation of
the optical thickness of the dust shell within the interval \tau(V)= 0.2-0.4.
Anticorrelated changes of the optical brightness (in particular with P ~ 3.3
yr) have not been found. Their absence suggests that the stellar wind of R CrB
deviates from spherical symmetry. The light curves suggest that the stellar
wind is variable. The variability of the stellar wind and the creation of dust
clouds may be caused by some kind of activity on the stellar surface. With some
time lag, periods of increased mass-loss cause an increase in the dust
formation rate at the inner boundary of the extended dust shell and an increase
in its IR brightness. We have derived the following parameters of the dust
shell (at mean brightness) by radiative transfer modeling: inner dust shell
radius r_in ~ 110 R_*, temperature T_dust(r_in) ~ 860 K, dust density
\rho_dust(r_in) ~ 1.1x10^{-20} g cm^-3, optical depth \tau(V) ~ 0.32 at 0.55
micron, mean dust formation rate [dM/dt]_dust ~ 3.1x10^-9 M_sun / yr, mass-loss
rate [dM/dt]_gas ~ 2.1x10^-7 M_sun / yr, size of the amorphous carbon grains

Boltzmann equation and hydrodynamic fluctuations
We apply the method of invariant manifolds to derive equations of generalized
hydrodynamics from the linearized Boltzmann equation and determine exact
transport coefficients, obeying Green-Kubo formulas. Numerical calculations are
performed in the special case of Maxwell molecules. We investigate, through the
comparison with experimental data and former approaches, the spectrum of
density fluctuations and address the regime of finite Knudsen numbers and
