"The destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple has remained a constant cultural, religious, and theoretical preoccupation of Jews and non-Jews. Deeply enshrined in historical memory, the destruction has occasioned a wide range of interpretations, associations, and metaphoric analogies. As such, it has, of course, also captured the imagination and interpretation of a wide range of artists - from Rembrandt and Nicolas Poussin in the seventeenth century, to Eduard Bendemann (1811-1889), the German artist of Jewish origin and Wilhelm von Kaulbach in the nineteenth. While often utilizing the destruction as a metaphor for other historical events or cultural phenomena, artists have chosen to depict either the acts of violence and havoc during the tragic event itself or create a more contemplative atmosphere that focuses on the feelings of loss, mourning, and displacement that came in its wake..."„Uništenje Jerusalima i njegovog hrama ostalo je stalna kulturna, verska i teorijska preokupacija Jevreja i neJevreja. This article was supported by The Israel Science Foundation (ISF), grant no. 161/11. Samuel Hirszenberg (1865-1908), the Łódź-born artist, created several signature works of art that would emerge as emblematic of the Jewish historical experience of the twentieth century. "Exile" (1904) is one of these works that came to evoke the trials and tribulations of Jewish fate in the decades following its creation. After placing "Exile" in the context of Hirszenberg’s oeuvre, this essay charts its cultural and artistic reception over close to a century in diverse media. "Exile" evoked instinctive, negative responses alongside a deep sense of identification and appropriation. The essay illuminates how a seminal work of art can engender intense interaction over decades, allowing a wide range of interpretations, references, and quotations. This article was supported by the Israel Science Foundation (ISF), grant no. 161/11. an earlier version of the article was presented at the international conference “Memory and Journey. "Few Jewish artists of the turn of the twentieth century created works that became classics in their lifetime. One who did was Samuel Hirszenberg, the Lodz-born (1865) artist, who trained in Cracow, Munich, and Paris, and eventually came in October 1907 to teach at the fledgling Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem, where he died less than a year later. Hirszenberg's huge and haunting 'Wandering Jew' of 1899 (343 x 293 cm), which we revisit here, presently in the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, is certainly one of the most dramatic paintings by a Jewish artist in the nineteenth century, and thus for good reason has been reproduced and discussed repeatedly in various publications. Indeed, the 'Wandering Jew' became one of the classic Zionist icons in the early Bezalel days..."„Nekoliko jevrejskih umetnika s početka dvadesetog veka stvorilo je dela koja su postala klasika za njihovog života.

    Approaching Conformality with Ten Flavors

We present first results for lattice simulations, on a single volume, of the low-lying spectrum of an SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory with ten light fermions in the fundamental representation. Fits to the fermion mass dependence of various observables are found to be globally consistent with the hypothesis that this theory is within or just outside the strongly-coupled edge of the conformal window, with mass anomalous dimension consistent with 1 over the range of scales simulated. We stress that we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking at scales well below our infrared cutoff. We discuss important systematic effects, including finite-volume corrections, and consider directions for future improvement.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Probing shock geometry via the charge to mass ratio dependence of heavy ion spectra from multiple spacecraft observations of the 2013 November 4 event

In large Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events, ions can be accelerated at coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shocks to very high energies. The spectra of heavy ions in many large SEP events show features such as roll-overs or spectral breaks. In some events when the spectra are plotted in terms of energy/nucleon, they can be shifted relative to each other to make the spectral breaks align. The amount of shift is charge to mass ratio (Q/A) dependent and varies from event to event. This can be understood if the spectra of heavy ions are organized by the diffusion coefficients (Cohen et al. 2005). In the work of Li et al. (2009), the Q/A dependence of the scaling is related to shock geometry when the CME-driven shock is close to the Sun. For events where multiple in-situ spacecraft observations exist, one may expect that different spacecraft are connected to different portions of the CME-driven shock that have different shock geometries, therefore yielding different Q/A dependence. In this work, we examine one SEP event which occurred on 2013 November 4. We study the Q/A dependence of the energy scaling for heavy ion spectra using helium, oxygen and iron ions. Observations from STEREO-A, STEREO-B and ACE are examined. We find that the scalings are different for different spacecraft. We suggest that this is because ACE, STEREO-A and STEREO-B are connected to different parts of the shock that have different shock geometries. Our analysis indicates that studying the Q/A scaling of in-situ particle spectra can serve as a powerful tool to remotely examine the shock geometry for large SEP events

The impact of socio-economic status on health related quality of life for children and adolescents with heart disease

Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) is known to influence children’s health-related quality of life. Many SES indicators assess distinct dimensions of a family’s position rather than measuring the same underlying construct. Many researchers, however, see SES indicators as interchangeable. The primary aim of this study was to determine which measure of SES had the strongest impact on health-related quality of life. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory Validation Study. The SES variables were family income, Hollingshead Index (occupational prestige), and highest parent educational attainment level. Health-related quality of life was measured using the Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory. Correlations tested the relationship among the three SES indicators. Regression-based modeling was used to calculate the strength of the association between SES measures and the Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory. Results: The correlations among the SES measures were moderately high, with the correlation between the Hollingshead Index and parental education being r = 0.62 (95% CI = 0.56-0.65). There were equally high correlations between family income and the Hollingshead (r = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.57-0.65) and a slightly lower correlation between family income and parental education (r = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.52-0.59). Family income had the highest explanatory value compared to the Hollingshead Index or parental educational attainment, while controlling for sex, race, current cardiac status, and original diagnosis, accounting for 4-5% of the variation in patient and parent Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory Total score, respectively, compared to the other SES measures. Conclusion: Family income as an SES measure demonstrated the greatest fidelity with respect to health-related quality of life as measured by the Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory across respondent groups and explained more of the variation compared to the Hollingshead Index or highest parental educational attainment

"It All Ended in an Unsporting Way": Serbian Football and the Disintegration of Yugoslavia, 1989-2006

Part of a wider examination into football during the collapse of Eastern European Communism between 1989 and 1991, this article studies the interplay between Serbian football and politics during the period of Yugoslavia's demise. Research utilizing interviews with individuals directly involved in the Serbian game, in conjunction with contemporary Yugoslav media sources, indicates that football played an important proactive role in the revival of Serbian nationalism. At the same time the Yugoslav conflict, twinned with a complex transition to a market economy, had disastrous consequences for football throughout the territories of the former Yugoslavia. In the years following the hostilities the Serbian game has suffered decline, major financial hardship and continuing terrace violence, resulting in widespread nostalgia for the pre-conflict era
