    Radicalization in Correctional Systems: A Scoping Review of the Literature Evaluating the Effectiveness of Preventing and Countering Interventions

    Although several prevention and countering radicalization programs in correctional institutions have been carried out in Europe and worldwide, little is known about their effectiveness. Thus, the current scoping review aimed at reporting on the state of the art of the literature assessing and evaluating such actions, identifying knowledge gaps, and examining methods used to assess their successfulness and impact. A total of eight studies that met eligibility criteria were reviewed after performing a search on Scopus, Web of Science, and PsychInfo (Ebsco) databases: Two studies evaluated a reintegration initiative based in the Netherlands; four focused on an Australian disengagement program; and two offered insights on a rehabilitation program carried out in Sri Lanka. Findings were discussed according to their evaluation methods (qualitative, mixed-methods, and quantitative) and instruments. Results highlighted that the evaluation process is still confronted with several methodological difficulties, such as a lack of agreement on how to univocally define and measure success and the identification of uniform indicators of deradicalization and disengagement. Additionally, results revealed that the effectiveness of these interventions is predominantly based on anecdotal evidence rather than on rigorous, empirical proofs. As such, it was not possible to compare these programs and determine which worked best.     Very Fast and Accurate Procedure for the Characterization of Photovoltaic Panels from Datasheet Information

    In recent years several numerical methods have been proposed to identify the five-parameter model of photovoltaic panels from manufacturer datasheets also by introducing simplification or approximation techniques. In this paper we present a fast and accurate procedure for obtaining the parameters of the five-parameter model by starting from its reduced form. The procedure allows characterizing, in few seconds, thousands of photovoltaic panels present on the standard databases. It introduces and takes advantage of further important mathematical considerations without any model simplifications or data approximations. In particular the five parameters are divided in two groups, independent and dependent parameters, in order to reduce the dimensions of the search space. The partitioning of the parameters provides a strong advantage in terms of convergence, computational costs, and execution time of the present approach. Validations on thousands of photovoltaic panels are presented that show how it is possible to make easy and efficient the extraction process of the five parameters, without taking care of choosing a specific solver algorithm but simply by using any deterministic optimization/minimization technique

    Effects of Abrupt Variations of Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure on the High-Latitude Ionosphere

    We show the results of a statistical study on the effects in the high-latitude ionosphere of abrupt variations of solar wind dynamic pressure, using Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) data in both hemispheres. We find that, during periods of quiet ionospheric conditions, the amount of radar backscatter increases when a variation in the dynamic pressure occurs, both positive (increase of the pressure) and negative (decrease of the pressure). We also investigate the behaviour of the Cross-Polar Cap Potential (CPCP) during pressure variations and show preliminary results

    Using Focus Group in the Development of UNIPA Emotional Autonomy Inventory

    Focus groups were used in order to develop a new measure of adolescents\u27 emotional autonomy from parents. The procedure started from an in depth analysis of the literature concerning the construct and a definition of the dimensions which characterize it. Following our idea of the construct, we developed a list of 60 items, getting some of them from existing instruments. Twenty-four adolescents participated in the focus group discussions about the adequacy of the items to measure emotional autonomy. Following their feedbacks a second version of the list with 59 items was presented in a focus group with experts in the field of developmental and clinical psychology, who were called to judge the ability of each item to evaluate the construct. Resulting from the indications emerged in this discussion, a final version of the scale with 66 items was developed and called UNIPA Adolescent Emotional Autonomy Inventory

    Feasibility of Storing Latent Heat with Liquid Crystals. Proof of Concept at Lab Scale

    In this work, the first experimental results of thermotropic liquid crystals used as phase change materials for thermal storage are presented. For that purpose, the n = 10 derivative from the family of 4-n-alkoxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acids has been prepared. Different techniques like polarized-light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and rheological measurements have been applied for its characterization. Having a mesophase/isotropic transition temperature around 251 degrees C, a clearing enthalpy of 55 kJ/kg, a thermal heat capacity of around 2.4 kJ/kg and a dynamic viscosity lower than 0.6 Pas, this compound fulfills the main requirements for being considered as latent heat storage material. Although further studies on thermal stability are necessary, the results already obtained are both promising and encouraging since they demonstrate de viability of this new application of liquid crystals as thermal storage media.The authors would like to acknowledge the E.     Gender and the systemic hypertension-snoring association: a questionnaire-based case-control study.

    Since the role of gender in the association between hypertension and snoring is unknown, we studied it while accounting for age and body mass index (BMI) as confounding variables. A questionnaire on snoring was administered to 90 hypertensive (HT) subjects (45 men and 45 women) and to 90 normotensive (NT) subjects matched for gender, age and BMI. As expected, snoring was more commonly reported by men than by women, but no significant difference was found between HT and NT men, irrespective of age. Conversely, heavy snoring was more frequently reported by HT than NT women; habitual snoring was more common among young (age50 years) HT than NT women; and heavy snoring was more common among older (age50 years) HT than NT women. These data suggest an effect of gender on the hypertension-snoring association: in men, snoring may be accounted for by age and BMI whether or not hypertension is present, whereas in women the natural history of snoring appears different and more severe in HT than in NT. Although the mechanism(s) responsible for the differences between men and women are obscure at present, gender may be an important variable in the systemic hypertension-snoring association

    Promoting Democratic and Intercultural Competences in the Primary School Context: The experience of “Children’s Voices for a new Human Space”

    The promotion of citizen’s democratic and intercultural competence is one of the main actions that European societies may take against some of the most significant challenges they are facing nowadays. The paper is aimed at briefly describing the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture, some actions that can be taken to promote democratic and intercultural competences and a case of implementation of this framework in the context of primary school, that is the Erasmus+ Project “Children’s Voices for a new Human Space” (CVS). The paper also aims at illustrating the intellectual outputs produced by CVS project consisting in a training course for teachers, a curriculum for children, an app assisting trainers and teachers during the implementation of the training and the curriculum, and a scientific study aimed at investigating the efficacy of the educational processes in which teachers and children have been involved.     Individual Differences in Adolescents’ Civic Engagement: The Role of Civic Discussions with Parents and Environmental Sensitivity

    The main goal of the current study was to examine the direct and moderating effects of civic dis-cussions with parents and environmental sensitivity using both the total score and its specific di-mensions (i.e., Aesthetic Sensitivity, AES; Ease of Excitation, EOE; Low Sensitivity Threshold, LST) on youth civic engagement (attitudes and behaviours). The empirical analysis relied on a ques-tionnaire-based survey conducted on a sample of 438 adolescents (30% males), aged between 14 and 18 years (M = 16.50, SD = 1.36). We used a structural equation model (SEM) with latent vari-ables and the latent moderated structural equation (LMS) method to test our hypotheses. Our re-sults showed that civic discussions with parents were positively and significantly associated with general environmental sensitivity and with AES and predicted both civic attitudes and civic be-haviours; EOE was negatively and significantly related to civic behaviours; AES was positively and significantly related to civic attitudes; and LST was not significantly related to either civic attitudes or behaviours. Contrary to our expectations, environmental sensitivity did not moderate the rela-tionship between civic discussions with parents and civic engagement. Our study further high-lights the relevance that parents have in shaping their children’s civic engagement and makes a novel contribution regarding how differences in perceiving and processing environmental stimuli can affect beliefs and behaviours toward community issues among young individual

    Evaluación antropométrica y de condición física en jugadores de voleibol en edad escolar. Diferencias entre sexos

    Physical fitness is a basic factor for volleyball players because it allows to maintain an optimal technical-tactical-competitive performance during matches over the whole season. The aim of this study is to analyse several parameters of physical fitness (body composition, hand strength, lower limb strength, back trunk flexibility) and gender and sport age/categories differences in young people belonging to the regional volleyball selections teams. 60 subjects participated in this study, divided in 4 groups by gender and age/category. Results obtained show statistically significant differences in relation to strength parameters and body composition according to gender; these differences are smaller in lower age/categories (infant: 13-14 years old). They increase (boys strength parameters) in favour of the 15-16 years old male volleyball players. In conclusion, higher differences between genders are observed in oldest volleyball players referring to anthropometrics and physical conditioning parameters.La condición física es un factor fundamental que permite al jugador de voleibol mantener un comportamiento técnico-táctico-competitivo óptimo y eficiente durante el partido y a lo largo de toda la temporada. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar parámetros antropométricos y de condición física (fuerza de prensión manual, fuerza del tren inferior y flexibilidad posterior del tronco) y las diferencias entre género y categorías en jóvenes deportistas pertenecientes a las selecciones extremeñas de voleibol (infantiles y cadetes). 60 sujetos participaron en el estudio, divididos en 4 grupos según género y categoría. Los resultados obtenidos indican diferencias significativas en parámetros de fuerza y composición corporal entre sexos, siendo menores estas diferencias cuando comparamos entre categorías, aunque se incrementan en parámetros de fuerza en chicos en categoría cadete. En conclusión, en categoría cadete se producen mayores diferencias entre chicos y chicas en parámetros antropométricos y de condición física
