Lead Precipitation Fluxes at Tropical Oceanic Sites Determined From ^(210)Pb Measurements
Concentrations of lead, ^(210)Pb, and ^(210)Po were measured in rain selected for least influence by local sources of contamination at several tropical and subtropical islands (Enewetak; Pigeon Key, Florida; and American Samoa) and shipboard stations (near Bermuda and Tahiti). Ratios expressed as ng Pb/dpm ^(210)Pb in rain were 250–900 for Pigeon Key (assuming 12% adsorption for ^(210)Pb and no adsorption for lead), depending on whether the air masses containing the analyzed rain came from the Caribbean or from the continent, respectively; about 390 for the northern Sargasso Sea downwind from emissions of industrial lead in North America; 65 for Enewetak, remote from continental emissions of industrial lead in the northern hemisphere; and 14 near Tahiti, a remote location in the southern hemisphere where industrial lead emissions to the atmosphere are much less than in the northern hemisphere. (The American Samoa sample yielded a higher ratio than Tahiti; the reason for this is not clear but may be due to local Pb sources.) The corresponding fluxes of lead to the oceans, based on measured or modeled ^(210)Pb precipitation fluxes, are about 4 ng Pb/cm^2y for Tahiti, 10 for Enewetak, and 270 for the Sargasso Sea site, and between 110 to 390 at Pigeon Key

Continuous-culture fermentation as a tool for forage evaluation
Ruminal degradation of organic matter and protein in alfalfa and prairie hay were evaluated in vivo, using cannulated cows, and in vitro, using a continuous-culture fermenter to simulate ruminal fermentation. Estimates of organic matter degradability, microbial N flow per unit feed N input, and efficiency of microbial growth were not different (P\u3e.10) between the in vivo and in vitro systems. However, for both forages, estimates of nitrogen degradability were greater with the in vitro system. Despite the differences between in vivo and in vitro techniques for some variables, continuous-culture fermentation will allow us to compare the effects of dietary treatments on forage digestion and will aid in the formulation of supplements to meet specific nutrient requirements for cattle consuming forage-based diets

Homotopy on spatial graphs and generalized Sato-Levine invariants
Edge-homotopy and vertex-homotopy are equivalence relations on spatial graphs
which are generalizations of Milnor's link-homotopy. Fleming and the author
introduced some edge (resp. vertex)-homotopy invariants of spatial graphs by
applying the Sato-Levine invariant for the constituent 2-component
algebraically split links. In this paper, we construct some new edge (resp.
vertex)-homotopy invariants of spatial graphs without any restriction of
linking numbers of the constituent 2-component links by applying the

Statistical analysis on testing of an entangled state based on Poisson distribution framework
A hypothesis testing scheme for entanglement has been formulated based on the
Poisson distribution framework instead of the POVM framework. Three designs
were proposed to test the entangled states in this framework. The designs were
evaluated in terms of the asymptotic variance. It has been shown that the
optimal time allocation between the coincidence and anti-coincidence
measurement bases improves the conventional testing method. The test can be
further improved by optimizing the time allocation between the anti-coincidence

Evaluation of the protein characteristics of four diverse grasses
Forage protein characteristics in four grasses were evaluated by the nylon bag method. All of the forages used (Bermudagrass hay, brome hay, forage sorghum hay, and prairie hay) were of relatively low quality, except the Bermudagrass, which was of average quality. The forages differed in the size of different protein fractions and in the rate and extent of protein degradation. Predicted extent of ruminal protein degradation (i.e., ruminal protein availability) was lowest for prairie hay, intermediate for Bermudagrass and forage sorghum hay, and highest for the brome hay
