Soft singularity and the fundamental length
It is shown that some regular solutions in 5D Kaluza-Klein gravity may have
interesting properties if one from the parameters is in the Planck region. In
this case the Kretschman metric invariant runs up to a maximal reachable value
in nature, i.e. practically the metric becomes singular. This observation
allows us to suppose that in this situation the problems with such soft
singularity will be much easier resolved in the future quantum gravity then by
the situation with the ordinary hard singularity (Reissner-Nordstr\"om
singularity, for example). It is supposed that the analogous consideration can
be applied for the avoiding the hard singularities connected with the gauge
charges.Comment: 5 page
Mission-oriented requirements for updating MIL-H-8501. Volume 1: STI proposed structure
The structure of a new flying and ground handling qualities specification for military rotorcraft is presented. This preliminary specification structure is intended to evolve into a replacement for specification MIL-H-8501A. The new structure is designed to accommodate a variety of rotorcraft types, mission flight phases, flight envelopes, and flight environmental characteristics and to provide criteria for three levels of flying qualities, a systematic treatment of failures and reliability, both conventional and multiaxis controllers, and external vision aids which may also incorporate synthetic display content. Existing and new criteria were incorporated into the new structure wherever they could be substantiated
Observation weights unlock bulk RNA-seq tools for zero inflation and single-cell applications
Dropout events in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) cause many transcripts to go undetected and induce an excess of zero read counts, leading to power issues in differential expression (DE) analysis. This has triggered the development of bespoke scRNA-seq DE methods to cope with zero inflation. Recent evaluations, however, have shown that dedicated scRNA-seq tools provide no advantage compared to traditional bulk RNA-seq tools. We introduce a weighting strategy, based on a zero-inflated negative binomial model, that identifies excess zero counts and generates gene-and cell-specific weights to unlock bulk RNA-seq DE pipelines for zero-inflated data, boosting performance for scRNA-seq
All stationary axi-symmetric local solutions of topologically massive gravity
We classify all stationary axi-symmetric solutions of topologically massive
gravity into Einstein, Schr\"odinger, warped and generic solutions. We
construct explicitly all local solutions in the first three sectors and present
an algorithm for the numerical construction of all local solutions in the
generic sector. The only input for this algorithm is the value of one constant
of motion if the solution has an analytic centre, and three constants of motion
otherwise. We present several examples, including soliton solutions that
asymptote to warped AdS.Comment: 42 pages, 9 figures. v2: Changed potentially confusing labelling of

Generating branes via sigma-models
Starting with the D-dimensional Einstein-dilaton-antisymmetric form equations
and assuming a block-diagonal form of a metric we derive a -dimensional
-model with the target space or its non-compact form. Various solution-generating techniques are
developed and applied to construct some known and some new -brane solutions.
It is shown that the Harrison transformation belonging to the
subgroup generates black -branes from the seed Schwarzschild solution. A
fluxbrane generalizing the Bonnor-Melvin-Gibbons-Maeda solution is constructed
as well as a non-linear superposition of the fluxbrane and a spherical black
hole. A new simple way to endow branes with additional internal structure such
as plane waves is suggested. Applying the harmonic maps technique we generate
new solutions with a non-trivial shell structure in the transverse space
(`matrioshka' -branes). It is shown that the -brane intersection rules
have a simple geometric interpretation as conditions ensuring the symmetric
space property of the target space. Finally, a Bonnor-type symmetry is used to
construct a new magnetic 6-brane with a dipole moment in the ten-dimensional
IIA theory.Comment: 21 pages Late
Correlated two-pion exchange and large-N(C) behavior of nuclear forces
The effect of correlated scalar-isoscalar two-pion exchange (CrTPE) modes is
considered in connection with central and spin-orbit parts of the NN force. The
two-pion correlation function is coupled directly to the scalar form factor of
the nucleon which we calculate in the large-N(C) limit where the nucleon can be
described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory. The results for the
central NN force show a strong repulsive core at short internucleon distances
supplemented by a moderate attraction beyond 1 fm. The long-range tail of the
central NN potential is driven by the the pion-nucleon sigma term and
consistent with the effective meson exchange. The spin-orbit part of
the NN potential is repulsive. The large-N(C) scaling behavior of the
scalar-isoscalar NN interaction is addressed. We show that the spin-orbit part
is O(1/N^2(C)) in strength relative to the central force resulting in the ratio
suggested by the 1/N(C) expansion for N(C)=3. The latter is in
agreement with our numerical analysis and with the Kaplan-Manohar large-N(C)
power counting. Unitarization of the scattering amplitude plays here
an important role and improves the tree level results. Analytical
representations of the CrTPE NN potential in terms of elementary functions are
derived and their chiral content is discussed.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figure
Half-life Limit of 19Mg
A search for 19Mg was performed using projectile fragmentation of a 150
MeV/nucleon 36Ar beam. No events of 19Mg were observed. From the time-of-flight
through the fragment separator an upper limit of 22 ns for the half-life of
19Mg was established
Close-packed floating clusters: granular hydrodynamics beyond the freezing point?
Monodisperse granular flows often develop regions with hexagonal close
packing of particles. We investigate this effect in a system of inelastic hard
spheres driven from below by a "thermal" plate. Molecular dynamics simulations
show, in a wide range of parameters, a close-packed cluster supported by a
low-density region. Surprisingly, the steady-state density profile, including
the close-packed cluster part, is well described by a variant of Navier-Stokes
granular hydrodynamics (NSGH). We suggest a simple explanation for the success
of NSGH beyond the freezing point.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Geroch--Kinnersley--Chitre group for Dilaton--Axion Gravity
Kinnersley--type representation is constructed for the four--dimensional
Einstein--Maxwell--dilaton--axion system restricted to space--times possessing
two non--null commuting Killing symmetries. New representation essentially uses
the matrix--valued formulation and effectively reduces the
construction of the Geroch group to the corresponding problem for the vacuum
Einstein equations. An infinite hierarchy of potentials is introduced in terms
of real symmetric matrices generalizing the scalar hierarchy of
Kinnersley--Chitre known for the vacuum Einstein equations.Comment: Published in ``Quantum Field Theory under the Influence of External

The first Frontier Fields cluster: 4.5{\mu}m excess in a z~8 galaxy candidate in Abell 2744
We present in this letter the first analysis of a z~8 galaxy candidate found
in the Hubble and Spitzer imaging data of Abell 2744, as part of the Hubble
Frontier Fields legacy program. We applied the most commonly-used methods to
select exceptionally high-z galaxies by combining non-detection and
color-criteria using seven HST bands. We used GALFIT on IRAC images for fitting
and subtracting contamination of bright nearby sources. The physical properties
have been inferred from SED-fitting using templates with and without nebular
emission. This letter is focussed on the brightest candidate we found
(m=26.2) over the 4.9 arcmin field of view covered by the WFC3.
It shows a non-detection in the ACS bands and at 3.6{\mu}m whereas it is
clearly detected at 4.5{\mu}m with rather similar depths. This break in the
IRAC data could be explained by strong [OIII]+H{\beta} lines at z~8 which
contribute to the 4.5{\mu}m photometry. The best photo-z is found at
z~8.0, although solutions at low-redshift (z~1.9) cannot be
completely excluded, but they are strongly disfavoured by the SED-fitting work.
The amplification factor is relatively small at {\mu}=1.490.02. The Star
Formation Rate in this object is ranging from 8 to 60 Mo/yr, the stellar mass
is in the order of M=(2.5-10) x 10Mo and the size is
r~0.350.15 kpc. This object is one of the first z~8 LBG candidates showing
a clear break between 3.6{\mu}m and 4.5{\mu}m which is consistent with the IRAC
properties of the first spectroscopically confirmed galaxy at a similar
redshift. Due to its brightness, the redshift of this object could potentially
be confirmed by near infrared spectroscopy with current 8-10m telescopes. The
nature of this candidate will be revealed in the coming months with the arrival
of new ACS and Spitzer data, increasing the depth at optical and near-IR
wavelengths.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy and
