    Subsidiary capability upgrading and parent-subsidiary relationship: insights from a Chinese acquisition in the UK

    Purpose: - This study aims to explore capability upgrading of EMNE’s subsidiaries in developed countries and how the parent-subsidiary relationship influences such upgrading. Design/methodology/approach: - The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach to capability upgrading of EMNEs subsidiaries in developed countries. It employs a single case study to explore this under-research area. Finding: - the analysis challenges the orthodox view and suggests broad based capability upgrading has taken place in the EMNE acquired subsidiaries ranging from product, process, functional to intersectoral. In addition, the capability upgrading was contingent on the degree of subsidiary autonomy and subsidiary mandates. Originality/value: - This study represents one of the first to examine capability upgrading and parent-subsidiary relationship in the context of EMNEs’ internationalisation activities

    ELECTROMECHANICAL DELAY AND REACTIVE STRENGTH INDICES OF SPRINT AND ENDURANCE TRAINED ATHLETES

    This study compared reactive strength indices and electromechanical delay in muscle of competitive sprint and endurance athletes. Reactive strength indices were obtained from five sprinters and six endurance athletes who completed drop jumps on a force-sledge apparatus at various drop heights. Electromechanical delay times were also obtained 011 the ankle plantar flexors while performing a simple heel raise activity. The results indicated that sprinters had significantly higher RSI scores at all drop heights. Sprint athletes also had significantly shorter electromechanical delay times indicating a capacity for generating force more rapidly and the likelihood of stiffer musculotendinous structures

    Managing Project Community in Infrastructure Megaprojects

    Developing countries, such as India, look towards massive investments in infrastructure megaprojects to achieve their development goals quickly. However, megaprojects are plagued with failures and inefficiencies often due to the project’s inability to handle external stakeholders such as project community. Project communities are the end users of the project, are most inconvenienced by the project, and they hold significant potential to stop the project by asking a democratically elected government to do so. In this context, we seek to understand how a metro rail megaproject in India manages their project community through visible and invisible strategies using an in-depth case study. The organizational power theories of the dimensions of power theory and the circuit of power theory are used to explain these strategies. The research draws on data from 30 semi-structured interviews with the project team and five years of social media data comprising 640 Tweets. A Grounded theory method is used to find the visible, invisible strategies and their relation between each other. The results show that invisible strategies depend on visible strategies by relying on the adaptations made for the community and the visible strategies depend on the invisible strategies by relying on the changed preferences of the project community. The findings have contributions to theory and practice of managing project community in infrastructure megaprojects

    Colloidal templating at a cholesteric - oil interface: Assembly guided by an array of disclination lines

    We simulate colloids (radius R∼1μR \sim 1\mum) trapped at the interface between a cholesteric liquid crystal and an immiscible oil, at which the helical order (pitch p) in the bulk conflicts with the orientation induced at the interface, stabilizing an ordered array of disclinations. For weak anchoring strength W of the director field at the colloidal surface, this creates a template, favoring particle positions eitheron top of or midway between defect lines, depending on α=R/p\alpha = R/p. For small α\alpha, optical microscopy experiments confirm this picture, but for larger α\alpha no templating is seen. This may stem from the emergence at moderate W of a rugged energy landscape associated with defect reconnections.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Characterization of the Noise in Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Depth Profiles

    The noise in the depth profiles of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is studied using different samples under various experimental conditions. Despite the noise contributions from various parts of the dynamic SIMS process, its overall character agrees very well with the Poissonian rather than the Gaussian distribution in all circumstances. The Poissonian relation between the measured mean-square error (MSE) and mean can be used to describe our data in the range of four orders. The departure from this relation at high counts is analyzed and found to be due to the saturation of the channeltron used. Once saturated, the detector was found to exhibit hysteresis between rising and falling input flux and output counts.Comment: 14 pages, 4 postscript figures, to appear on J. Appl. Phy
