    Knowledge of learning disabilities: the relationship with choice, duty of care and non-aversive approaches

    The present study examines the relationship between the knowledge of the diagnostic criteria for a learning disability (based on DSM IV criteria), care practices and experience in health care and social care staff. Responses to a questionnaire were analysed in terms of participants emphasis on: recognizing duty of care; enabling choice; non-aversive and aversive strategies. Results indicated that the knowledge of the criteria for a learning disability was limited, with only I6% of the sample correctly identifying all three criteria. There were no significant differences between the two groups in relation to experience or level of knowledge. No clear cut differences were found between the groups in relation to tendency to emphasize a particular management approach, with the strategies adopted appearing to be influenced by vignettes used in this study. Participants tended to give responses that identified both a recognition of their duty of care to clients and the need to enable choice. Limitations of this study are discussed

    Palaeogene glendonites from Denmark

    Pristinely preserved mineral pseudomorphs called glendonites, up to 1.6 m long, from the Palaeogene strata of Denmark allow detailed crystallographic characterisation and add to the understanding of the transformation of the precursor mineral, ikaite (CaCO3 center dot 6H(2)O), to calcite, which constitutes the glendonite. We describe Danish pseudomorphs after ikaite from two localities and formations: the Early Eocene Fur Formation and the Late Oligocene Brejning Formation. This detailed study highlights that key aspects such as morphology and mode of occurrence of these ancient glendonites are identical to those of their parent mineral ikaite, when it grows in marine sediments. Systematic distortion of the angles in glendonite and marine sedimentary ikaite relative to the ideal ikaite symmetry may arise due to the incorporation of organic matter into the crystal structure, and we demonstrate the similarity between modern and ancient ikaite formation zones in the marine sedimentary realm with respect to organic matter

    Bi-functional glycosyltransferases catalyze both extension and termination of pectic galactan oligosaccharides

    Pectins are the most complex polysaccharides of the plant cell wall. Based on the number of methylations, acetylations and glycosidic linkages present in their structures, it is estimated that up to 67 transferase activities are involved in pectin biosynthesis. Pectic galactans constitute a major part of pectin in the form of side-chains of rhamnogalacturonan-I. In Arabidopsis, galactan synthase 1 (GALS1) catalyzes the addition of galactose units from UDP-Gal to growing β-1,4-galactan chains. However, the mechanisms for obtaining varying degrees of polymerization remain poorly understood. In this study, we show that AtGALS1 is bifunctional, catalyzing both the transfer of galactose from UDP-α-d-Gal and the transfer of an arabinopyranose from UDP-β-l-Arap to galactan chains. The two substrates share a similar structure, but UDP-α-d-Gal is the preferred substrate, with a 10-fold higher affinity. Transfer of Arap to galactan prevents further addition of galactose residues, resulting in a lower degree of polymerization. We show that this dual activity occurs both in vitro and in vivo. The herein described bifunctionality of AtGALS1 may suggest that plants can produce the incredible structural diversity of polysaccharides without a dedicated glycosyltransferase for each glycosidic linkage
