    Human activity recognition using multisensor data fusion based on Reservoir Computing

    Activity recognition plays a key role in providing activity assistance and care for users in smart homes. In this work, we present an activity recognition system that classifies in the near real-time a set of common daily activities exploiting both the data sampled by sensors embedded in a smartphone carried out by the user and the reciprocal Received Signal Strength (RSS) values coming from worn wireless sensor devices and from sensors deployed in the environment. In order to achieve an effective and responsive classification, a decision tree based on multisensor data-stream is applied fusing data coming from embedded sensors on the smartphone and environmental sensors before processing the RSS stream. To this end, we model the RSS stream, obtained from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) implemented as efficient Echo State Networks (ESNs), within the Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm. We targeted the system for the EvAAL scenario, an international competition that aims at establishing benchmarks and evaluation metrics for comparing Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions. In this paper, the performance of the proposed activity recognition system is assessed on a purposely collected real-world dataset, taking also into account a competitive neural network approach for performance comparison. Our results show that, with an appropriate configuration of the information fusion chain, the proposed system reaches a very good accuracy with a low deployment cost

    Experimental Study on Fiber Laser Microcutting of Nimonic 263 Superalloy

    Abstract Laser cutting of NIMONIC 263 sheet was investigated by using a 100 W Yb:YAG fiber laser. The study was divided in two phases. In the first one, the critical cutting speeds were found fixing the average power (80 W), changing the pulse duration, the cutting speed, the nozzle diameter and the focus position. Then, a full factorial design was adopted according to the DoE methodology. In order to determine which of the process parameters affect the kerf geometry and how, Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) was used. Experimental results show the possibility to obtain kerf characterized by narrow width and low taper angle values

    917-97 Decreased Resistance Against Oxidation of LDL from Patients with Homozigous Familial Hypercholesterolemia

    Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) was the first genetic disorder recognized to cause myocardial infarction. Homozigotes (H) inherit two mutant genes at the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor locus, and as a result of the increased levels and prolonged residence time of LDL in plasma, there is a strong tendency toward accumulation of LDL in the arterial wall, causing early atherogenesis. It has been shown that LDL might undergo oxidation before it can be taken up by macrophages and it become foam cells. Thus, one additional explanation for atherogenesis in FH may be the extent to which LDL is susceptible to oxidation. We selected 8 homozigous FH pts (mean total-cholesterol 825±70mg/dl) matched with 8 healthy subjects to investigate the LDL oxidizability. Skin fibroblast cultures showed that one patient was receptor negative, while others were receptor-defective. LDL were isolated from serum by ultracentrifugations in KBr. Purified LDL was exposed to oxygen radicals generated by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase reaction (2mM and 100mU, respectively for 18hs at 37°C). Malonildihaldehyde (MDAI content was evaluated by the thiobarbiturate method. LDL analysis was carried on polyacrylamide (PAGE; 5 to 16% gradient) and agarose gel electrophoresis (0.8% in Tris-HCL buffer). No significant increase was observed in the basal concentration of MDA between LDL from H and controls (0.8±0.12 and 0.9±0.15nmoles of MDAlmg of protein, respectively). Instead, afteroxidation MDAwas 35.1±4.5* nmoles/mg of protein LDL from H, and 23.5±4.1 in controls (*p<0.05). PAGE confirmed the purity of LDL, present as an intact apolipoprotein B100(apo-B100). When oxidized LDL was run on PAGE an extensive apo-B100fragmentation, replaced by lower fragments ranging from 97.400 to 205.000 m.w., was only observed in LDL from H but not in controls in our experimental conditions. MDA content after oxidation of LDL correlated well with the loss of intact apo-B100. Finally, the relative LDL mobility on agarose gel was evaluated. This assay allows to detect changes in electric charge induced by oxidation. Basal LDL from H and controls migrated as homogeneous bands to 1.2±0.2 and 1.1±0.2cm from the origin. In contrast, oxidized LDL from H migrated to 2.1±0.3*cm from the origin while those of controls migrated to 1.5±0.2 (*p<0.05). Thus, in FH LDL appear to be more susceptible to oxidationin vitro; the indices for LDL oxidizability were all significantly different from those of controls. This phenomenon may be an important additional mechanism of atherogenesis in homozigous FH

    Social Cognition Individualized Activities Lab for Social Cognition Training and Narrative Enhancement in Patients With Schizophrenia: A Randomized Controlled Study to Assess Efficacy and Generalization to Real-Life Functioning (Prot. n°: NCT05130853)

    Subjects affected by schizophrenia present significant deficits in various aspects of social cognition, such as emotion processing, social perception and theory of mind (ToM). These deficits have a greater impact than symptoms on occupational and social functioning. Therefore, social cognition represents an important therapeutic target in people with schizophrenia. Recent meta-analyses showed that social cognition training (SCT) is effective in improving social cognition in subjects with schizophrenia; however, real-life functioning is not always ameliorated. Integration of SCT with an intervention targeting metacognitive abilities might improve the integration of social cognitive skills to daily life functioning. Our research group has implemented a new individualized rehabilitation program: the Social Cognition Individualized Activities Lab, SoCIAL, which integrates SCT with a module for narrative enhancement, an intervention targeting metacognitive abilities. The present multi-center randomized controlled study will compare the efficacy of SoCIAL and treatment as usual (TAU) in subjects diagnosed with a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. The primary outcome will be the improvement of social cognition and real-life functioning; while the secondary outcome will be the improvement of symptoms, functional capacity and neurocognition. The results of this study will add empirical evidence to the benefits and feasibility of SCT and narrative enhancement in people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders

    Biostimulant Potential of Humic Acids Extracted From an Amendment Obtained via Combination of Olive Mill Wastewaters (OMW) and a Pre-treated Organic Material Derived From Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

    Olive mill wastewaters (OMW) contain significant levels of phenolic compounds with antimicrobial/phytotoxic activity and high amounts of undecomposed organic matter that may exert negative effects on soil biology. Among OMW detoxification techniques, those focusing on oxidative degradation of phenolic compounds are relevant. The composting (bio-oxidation) process in particular, exploits exothermic oxidation reactions by microorganisms to transform the organic matrix of OMW into an amendment biologically stable and feasible to use in agriculture. This process consists of an active phase during which organic compounds are rapidly decomposed, and a curing phase characterized by a slow breakdown of the remaining materials with the formation of humic substances (HS) as by-products. In this study, bio-oxidation of OMW was performed using a pre-treated organic material derived from municipal solid waste (MSW). The obtained amendment (OMWF) was stable and in accordance with the legislative parameters of mixed organic amendments. HS were then extracted from OMWF and MSW (control amendment, Amd-C), and differences in structural properties of their humic acid (HA) fraction were highlighted via spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared) and Dynamic Light Scattering. To assay a potential use of HA as biostimulants for crops, 12-day old Zea Mays L. plants were supplied with HA at 0.5 mg and 1 mg C L-1 for 2 days. HA from both amendments increased plant growth, but HA from OMWF was more effective at both dosages (plus 35–37%). Also, HA from OMWF enhanced both nitrogen assimilation and glycolysis by increasing the activity of nitrate reductase (∼1.8–1.9 fold), phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) (∼1.8–2 fold) and pyruvate kinase (PK) (∼1.5–1.8 fold), while HA from Amd-C targeted glycolysis preferentially. HA from OMWF, however, significantly stimulated plant nutrition only at lower dosage, perhaps because certain undetermined compounds from detoxified OMW and incorporated in HA altered the root membrane permeability, thus preventing the increase of nutrient uptake. Conversely, HA from Amd-C increased nutrient accumulation in maize at both dosages. In conclusion, our results indicate that the amendment obtained via OMW composting using MSW had a reduced pollution load in terms of phenolic compounds, and HA extracted from OMWF could be used as valuable biostimulants during maize cultivation
