Tracking moving optima using Kalman-based predictions

    Get PDF
The dynamic optimization problem concerns finding an optimum in a changing environment. In the field of evolutionary algorithms, this implies dealing with a timechanging fitness landscape. In this paper we compare different techniques for integrating motion information into an evolutionary algorithm, in the case it has to follow a time-changing optimum, under the assumption that the changes follow a nonrandom law. Such a law can be estimated in order to improve the optimum tracking capabilities of the algorithm. In particular, we will focus on first order dynamical laws to track moving objects. A vision-based tracking robotic application is used as testbed for experimental comparison

Due to the impact of the internet and technology on the millennials generation, the teaching and learning process must be integrated by both trends, as they can increase university students’ motivation as well as their levels of class participation. This integration can be achieved through potential and authentic pedagogical strategies: warm-up activities using smartphones and a technological tool called Quizizz. The objectives of this study were: 1) to identify if students increased their class participation after using quizzes and smartphones as a warm-up strategy, and 2) to explore the perceptions of the students about their level of class participation. Data were collected with the application of three instruments (the teacher's diary, a classroom map, a students' perception scale) and also a combination of a qualitative and a quantitative data analysis. The results of this study pointed out that all of the 47 participants improved their willingness to participate in class. However, their own perceptions about participation did not show any particular change. In other words, the students´ willingness to participate in class positively changed, but their own perceptions about participation remained the same before and after the application of these strategies.Debido al impacto del internet y la tecnología en la generación de los millennials, el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje debe ser integrado por ambas tendencias, ya que pueden aumentar la  motivación de los estudiantes universitarios y sus niveles de participación en clases. Evaluation of Residual Stresses Induced by High Speed Milling Using an Indentation Method

In this work, a recently developed method based on the change of distance between collinear indents is used to evaluate different states of residual stress, which were generated in samples of AA 6082-T6 and AA 7075-T6 aluminium alloys milled at high speed. One of the advantages of this method, which needs a universal measuring machine, is not requiring neither the use of specific equipment nor highly skilled operators. Also, by integrating an indentation device to the mentioned machine, the absolute error of measurement can be reduced. In results obtained in samples subjected to different cutting conditions it is observed a correlation between the stress values and the depth of cut, showing the AA 6082-T6 alloy higher susceptibility to be stressed. Furthermore, the high sensitivity of the method allowed detecting very small differences in the values reached by different normal components in the zones corresponding to climb and conventional cutting. It is important to note that these differences were similar for both evaluated alloys. Finally, the directions associated with the principal components of residual stress, where maximum local plastic stretching occurs, were found to be strongly dependent on the rolling direction prior to machining.Fil: Diaz, Felipe Victor. Although high-speed machining offers a number of advantages over conventional machining, it is possible that the residual stress distributions generated by the former can affect the service life of the processed components. In this paper, a newly developed micro-indent method is used to evaluate different residual stress states, which were introduced in samples of AA 7075-T6 aluminum alloy milled at low and high-speed. Different surfaces were generated by varying the cutting speed in one order of magnitude, from 100 m/min to 1000 m/min. Two machining protocols, which consist of using different machine tools, were evaluated. The results show that it is possible to generate and to evaluate very small residual stresses. Finally, the values and levels obtained for normal components were analyzed in function of mechanical and thermal effects that generated the residual stresses.Fil: Diaz, Felipe Victor. Get PDF
Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most serious complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The demand for TKA is rapidly increasing, resulting in a subsequent increase in infections involving knee prosthesis. Despite the existence of common management practices, the best approach for several aspects in the management of periprosthetic knee infection remains controversial. This review examines the current understanding in the management of the following aspects of PJI: preoperative risk stratification, preoperative antibiotics, preoperative skin preparation, outpatient diagnosis, assessing for infection in revision cases, improving culture utility, irrigation and debridement, one and two-stage revision, and patient prognostic information. Moreover, ten strategies for the management of periprosthetic knee infection based on available literature, and experience of the authors were reviewed

Determination and Analysis of Residual Stresses Induced by High Speed Milling Using a Micro-indent Method

    Get PDF
The purpose of this work is to determine and analyze residual stress normal components and anisotropy degrees introduced by high-speed milling in specimens of AA 6082-T6 and AA 7075-T6 aluminum alloys. At each machined sample, the climb and conventional cutting zones were evaluated and compared. This paper includes a comprehensive study of thermal and mechanical effects associated with the residual stress introduction. For normal components determination, an optimized micro-indent method was used. Each measurement sequence from this approach was performed using a high accuracy measuring machine and classified according to thermal deviations measured. The residual displacements were determined with an absolute error down to ±300 nm. The normal components analysis allowed to infer the strong influence of the rolling process previous to high-speed milling and besides, the stress levels associated with thermal effects (higher in AA 7075-T6). Finally, the lower residual stress anisotropy degrees in both materials observed in the conventional cutting zone would indicate more homogenous local plastic stretching in this region for all planar directions.Fil: Vottero, S..
