A stable, single-photon emitter in a thin organic crystal for application to quantum-photonic devices
Single organic molecules offer great promise as bright, reliable sources of
identical single photons on demand, capable of integration into solid-state
devices. It has been proposed that such molecules in a crystalline organic
matrix might be placed close to an optical waveguide for this purpose, but so
far there have been no demonstrations of sufficiently thin crystals, with a
controlled concentration of suitable dopant molecules. Here we present a method
for growing very thin anthracene crystals from super-saturated vapour, which
produces crystals of extreme flatness and controlled thickness. We show how
this crystal can be doped with a widely adjustable concentration of
dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecules and we examine the optical properties of these
molecules to demonstrate their suitability as quantum emitters in nanophotonic
devices. Our measurements show that the molecules are available in the crystal
as single quantum emitters, with a well-defined polarisation relative to the
crystal axes, making them amenable to alignment with optical nanostructures. We
find that the radiative lifetime and saturation intensity vary little within
the crystal and are not in any way compromised by the unusual matrix
environment. We show that a large fraction of these emitters are able to
deliver more than photons without photo-bleaching, making them

Short-Term Effect of a New Oral Sodium Hyaluronate Formulation on Knee Osteoarthritis: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial
Objective: the aim of this pilot study was to test the short-term effect of oral supplementation with a sodium hyaluronate with a large spectrum of molecular weights (FS-HA®) on the symptoms and functionality of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: 60 subjects affected by clinical and/or radiological diagnosis of symptomatic knee OA were consecutively enrolled in a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. At randomization visit, at day 28 (visit 2), and day 56 (visit 3), the Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the Lequesne Functional Index (LFI) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain (VAS-p) were administered to the enrolled patients. Then, patients were asked how many times they used rescue medications (non-steroidal antinflammatory drugs–NSAIDs and/or anti-pain drugs) during the previous 4 weeks. Finally, the range of knee joint motion (ROM) was also instrumentally measured. Results: In FS-HA® treated subjects, VAS-p, pain and total WOMAC score, LFI and ROM significantly improved compared to the baseline values (p < 0.05). At 60 days, the VAS-p and the pain WOMAC score were significantly lower after FS-HA® treatment when compared with placebo as well (p < 0.05). The FS-HA® treated subjects significantly reduced the weekly use of NSAIDs and/or antipain drugs when compared to the placebo-treated ones (p < 0.05). Conclusion: the oral supplementation with a FS-HA® characterized by a large spectrum of molecular weight was associated with a short-term improvement in symptomatology and functionality of osteoarthritis-affected knees, and associated with a reduction in the use of NSAIDS and anti-pain drugs
Influence of dietary protein and fructooligosaccharides on fecal fermentative end-products, fecal bacterial populations and apparent total tract digestibility in dogs
Background: Feeding dogs with diets rich in protein may favor putrefactive fermentations in the hindgut, negatively affecting the animal\u2019s intestinal environment. Conversely, prebiotics may improve the activity of healthpromoting bacteria and prevent bacterial proteolysis in the colon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on fecal microbiota and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) in dogs fed kibbles differing in protein content. Twelve healthy adult dogs were used in a 4
74 replicated Latin Square design to determine the effects of four diets: 1) Low protein diet (LP, crude protein (CP) 229 g/kg dry matter (DM)); 2) High protein diet (HP, CP 304 g/kg DM); 3) Diet 1+1.5 g of FOS/kg; 4) Diet 2+1.5 g of FOS/kg. The diets contained silica at 5 g/kg as a digestion marker. Differences in protein content were obtained using different amounts of a highly digestible swine greaves meal. Each feeding period lasted 28 d, with a 12 d wash-out in between periods. Fecal samples were collected from dogs at 0, 21 and 28 d of each feeding period. Feces excreted during the last five days of each feeding period were collected and pooled in order to evaluate ATTD. Results: Higher fecal ammonia concentrations were observed both when dogs received the HP diets (p<0. 001) and the supplementation with FOS (p<0.05). The diets containing FOS resulted in greater ATTD of DM, Ca, Mg, Na, Zn, and Fe (p<0.05) while HP diets were characterized by lower crude ash ATTD (p<0.05). Significant interactions were observed between FOS and protein concentration in regards to fecal pH (p<0. 05), propionic acid (p<0.05), acetic to propionic acid and acetic + n-butyric to propionic acid ratios (p<0.01), bifidobacteria (p<0.05)andATTDofCP(p<0.05)andMn(p<0.001). Conclusions: A relatively moderate increase of dietary protein resulted in higher concentrations of ammonia in canine feces. Fructooligosaccharides displayed beneficial counteracting effects (such as increased bifidobacteria) when supplemented in HP diets, compared to those observed in LP diets and, in general, improved the ATTD of several minerals
