Disc loss and renewal in A0535+26

This paper presents observations of the Be/X-ray binary system A0535+26 revealing the first observed loss of its circumstellar disc, demonstrated by the loss of its JHK infrared excess and optical/IR line emission. New spectral observations of Callisto and leading/trailing hemisphere distinctions

In December 1989 and January 1990, new observations of the leading and trailing edges of Callisto were made from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Using the Cool Grating Array Spectrometer, spectral coverage was obtained from 1.89 to 2.46 microns and from 2.8 to 4.2 microns for both the leading and trailing hemispheres. In addition, spectral coverage of the leading hemisphere was obtained from 1.30 to 2.55 microns and from 4.2 to 4.8 microns. Interpretations of the data are given

Psychological and emotional resilience are important Occupational Therapy (OT) graduate skills. Occupational Therapists often embark on varied careers in highly demanding and challenging work environments. Theoretically, teaching and learning resilience during training affords protective advantages including safeguarding effects, which promote wellness and a sense of “I can do this, I will survive”. However, OT educators face significant challenges knowing how best to promote resilience through self-directed learning (SDL) approaches. Surveys of Galaxy Clusters with the Sunyaev Zel'dovich Effect

We have created mock Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) surveys of galaxy clusters using high resolution N-body simulations. To the pure surveys we add `noise' contributions appropriate to instrument and primary CMB anisotropies. Applying various cluster finding strategies to these mock surveys we generate catalogues which can be compared to the known positions and masses of the clusters in the simulations. We thus show that the completeness and efficiency that can be achieved depend strongly on the frequency coverage, noise and beam characteristics of the instruments, as well as on the candidate threshold. We study the effects of matched filtering techniques on completeness, and bias. We suggest a gentler filtering method than matched filtering in single frequency analyses. We summarize the complications that arise when analyzing the SZE signal at a single frequency, and assess the limitations of such an analysis. Our results suggest that some sophistication is required when searching for `clusters' within an SZE map.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Iconic prosody in story reading

Recent experiments have shown that people iconically modulate their prosody corresponding with the meaning of their utterance (e.g., Shintel et al., 2006). This article reports findings from a story reading task that expands the investigation of iconic prosody to abstract meanings in addition to concrete ones. Participants read stories that contrasted along concrete and abstract semantic dimensions of speed (e.g., a fast drive, slow career progress) and size (e.g., a small grasshopper, an important contract). Participants read fast stories at a faster rate than slow stories, and big stories with a lower pitch than small stories. The effect of speed was distributed across the stories, including portions that were identical across stories, whereas the size effect was localized to size-related words. Overall, these findings enrich the documentation of iconicity in spoken language and bear on our understanding of the relationship between gesture and speech
