Intra-industry trade between The United States and México: 1993-1998

This paper examines changes in intra-industry trade, IIT, in manufactured goods between the US and Mexico over the first five years of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Most industries experienced large increases in, IIT. An examination of various indexes of intra-industry specialization indicates that few industries in either country are candidates for significant adjustment problems. These findings should lessen opposition to greater regional economic integration in the Western Hemisphere

Growth Control in California: Prospects for Local Government Implementation of Timing and Sequential Control of Residential Development

In the last decade California has been characterized by intensive suburban development. Traditional methods of land use regulation have been ineffective in alleviating the resultant strain upon local governments in their attempts to adequately accommodate such growth. In 1969 the Town of Ramapo, New York amended its zoning ordinance to implement a revolutionary and comprehensive plan-timing and sequential controls-designed to phase residential growth to coincide with the town\u27s ability to provide necessary services and facilities. Herein, the authors analyze the Ramapo Plan in terms of the legal questions raised thereby and the adaptability of the plan for use by California local governments. The authors conclude that timing and sequential controls amount to an efficient and legally valid tool for the control of residential development, providing that such a plan is implemented pursuant to a carefully reasoned and systematic long-range program for municipal growth

Enhancing Doctoral Completion in Women: Evidence From a Qualitative Study of a Unique Federally Funded Program

In an era where campus environments were often unwelcoming to women, and there were few women role models, an innovative program funded by the National Institute of Education produced 100% completion by female and minority doctoral students. At a 25-year reunion, the graduates reflected on their program experiences and careers. Reflections were audiotaped and subjected to thematic narrative analysis. Five themes were identified through the assistance of a large interdisciplinary interpretive group: Freedom to Widen Horizons, We Were Kindred Souls, Women Who Wanted Us to Succeed, It Was a Gift, and Paying it Forward. Findings of the study are highly relevant today, given the persistence of sexism in academia, the underrepresentation of women among holders of doctoral degrees, and the need to better prepare women for faculty and leadership roles
