The University of Akron employs a web application that allows residents to check guests into each residence hall on campus. In addition to this paper, a custom web application was built to contrast against the university\u27s current system and to recognize the issues raised by its employee staff.     Automotive Collision Warning System Retrofit

    In the early 2000s, few automakers began implementing forward collision warning systems in their cars. As technology advanced this system became available on more and more luxury cars. In recent years, this technology has spread to more affordable vehicles driven every day. However, as this technology has only recently advanced to less expensive, more economical cars, older vehicles of the same model may not have this advanced and important safety feature. This project investigates and creates a preliminary design for an affordable, easy-to-install, forward collision warning system that can be retrofitted to vehicles without the system currently installed. Using a density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm, an extended Kalman filter, and a time-to-collision algorithm, a forward collision warning system was developed and simulated using the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) test scenarios. Software testing and implementation was done in MATLAB and has provided a foundation for future hardware implementation using Texas Instruments mmWave automotive radar (AWR1843BOOST)

    Headlamp/Bike Light Damping System

    The task for this project is to design a headlamp and/or bike light that absorbs the impact shocks from the user’s actions. The user that the system is being designed for may be riding a bike or running on a trail in the evening or early in the morning where the light needs to be stabilized and their path must be illuminated. This report presents the final design chosen after months of prototyping and design iteration. It encompasses the system design, design verification through testing, implementation, future recommendations, and lessons learned throughout the process. The chosen design utilizes a fully passive, magnetic damping system to counteract disturbances in the vertical direction. Through vibration tests, drop tests, and field tests, the design is refined and validated to ensure it fulfills its intended functions. The main test was the vibration test which used accelerometers to help find the optimal height between the magnets that will induce the most damping. The vertical axis was the most important that saw the most instability so that was where the stabilizing system was implemented. The ideal distance was found to be 1.22 inches which means the distance to the middle magnets is 0.61 inches. When the magnets move closer than this 0.61 inches it causes a rapid increase in the magnetic force and causes the system to rapidly stabilize. This distance will provide the best damping for when the headlamp is worn for casual use and up to light jogging. When going through the design process many different types of damping systems were considered and magnets ended up being the most efficient due to their ability to self-stabilize, decrease the manufacturing difficulty, and keep the system completely mechanical

    Toward TeV Conformality

    We study the chiral condensate for an SU(3) gauge theory with NfN_f massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation when NfN_f is increased from 2 to 6. For Nf=2N_f=2, our lattice simulations of <ψˉψ>/F3<\bar{\psi} \psi >/F^3, where FF is the Nambu-Goldstone-boson decay constant, agree with the measured QCD value. For Nf=6N_f = 6, this ratio shows significant enhancement, presaging an even larger enhancement anticipated as NfN_f increases further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. v2: revised version for PR

    WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

    Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Study Protocol for a Stepped-Wedge Randomized Cookstove Intervention in Rural Honduras: Household Air Pollution and Cardiometabolic Health

    Growing evidence links household air pollution exposure from biomass-burning cookstoves to cardiometabolic disease risk. Few randomized controlled interventions of cookstoves (biomass or otherwise) have quantitatively characterized changes in exposure and indicators of cardiometabolic health, a growing and understudied burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Ideally, the solution is to transition households to clean cooking, such as with electric or liquefied petroleum gas stoves; however, those unable to afford or to access these options will continue to burn biomass for the foreseeable future. Wood-burning cookstove designs such as the Justa (incorporating an engineered combustion zone and chimney) have the potential to substantially reduce air pollution exposures. Previous cookstove intervention studies have been limited by stove types that did not substantially reduce exposures and/or by low cookstove adoption and sustained use, and few studies have incorporated community-engaged approaches to enhance the intervention
