Such policies cover different areas and sectors of society, considering public safety, social support, and health, among other aspects. This article reports on the presence of drug users in a student community and discusses actions that can be taken to provide guidance and support for users, enabling them to be reinserted in the social community. The work was carried out within the extension project Cinema and Citizenship: Drugs in the Family Environment, whose purpose was to develop citizenship and social inclusion by means of showing films portraying cases where the use of drugs was overcome using sports practice. A survey was made of films involving the theme of drugs and the role of sports practice in overcoming the problem. The films were exhibited at selected municipal, state, and private schools in the city of Santa Cruz. After showing the film to the students, a presentation was made concerning the use of drugs and the leisure options and help available in the city. The students were then asked to answer a short questionnaire about drug use. The activity was conducted at seven schools in Santa Cruz, with the participation of around 300 students, although only 220 completed the questionnaires. The average age of these 220 participants was 15.3±4.2 years, and 53% were female and 47% male. Concerning drug use, 96.3% said they had never used drugs, while only 3.7% said that they had used drugs. Over half of the young people (58.1%) reported knowing someone who used drugs, and 68.3% stated that they would try to help someone with problems associated with drugs, but only 19.1% confirmed that they had been able to help a colleague. The work of this project in the public schools of the city of Santa Cruz made a positive contribution in terms of the provision of guidance to the young people about the benefits of sports practice. In addition, it was possible to provide guidance to potentially socially vulnerable young people about the limited support services available in the city.
Functional profile of ALS patients over 14 months of physical therapy
Introduction: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a degenerative and fatal disease that changes the
individuals’ functionality. Physical therapy plays an important role in ALS by using assessment tools to evaluate
functional performance. Objective: To investigate functional changes caused by ALS through 14 months in individuals
with and without physical therapy. Method: A cohort study conducted between 2010 and 2013 in the city of Natal-RN.
The study included patients in various stages of ALS, with no associated pathologies and those who were being
monitored by the Reference Center since 2010. Functional characteristics were categorized by applying the motor
items of Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and ALS-Functional Rating Scale
(ALSFRS). Participants were divided into two groups, those who performed physical therapy (FA) and those who
didn’t (CG). They were longwise evaluated in 3 different moments (1st day of assessment, four months after the first
assessment and 10 months after the second evaluation). Nonparametric Friedman test was performed, considering
p <0.05. Results: It was observed a significant functional decline in the control group (p <0.05) measured by the ALSFRS. The CG also presented functional decline greater than the AF group from FIM scores, however without
statistical significance. There was no difference in the scores of FSS. Conclusion: Physical therapy can be a great
adjunct in functional decline retardation in patients with ALS. It also emphasizes the importance of specific scales
for ALS, considering the disease progressive and heterogeneous nature
Upper extremity motor quality evaluation in children with Cerebral Palsy
Abstract Introduction: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder that may compromise functional abilities of the upper limbs due to motor and sensitive loss, that are still poorly evaluated and described by reliable tools. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate motor quality and skills of the upper extremity in children with CP in regions of Trairi and Seridó from Rio Grande do Norte state (Brazil). Methods: It is a cross-sectional exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, with 17 children with CP, aged between four and eight years. The following instruments were used for upper extremity evaluation: Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), Quality of Upper Extremity Skills Test (QUEST) and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Results: Mean and standard deviation (sd) of QUEST total score and the domains dissociated movement, grasp, weight bearing and extensive protection were, respectively, 41.06/37.08; 53.12/34.50; 15.51/62.98; 37.76/37.52; 42.48/47.26. MACS and GMFCS median scores were, respectively, 3 (three) and 5 (five); high positive correlation was observed between MACS and GMFCS (rs=0.83) and high negative correlation between GMFCS and total QUEST (rs=-0.83), as well as between MACS and QUEST (rs=-0.84); and MACS and all QUEST domains (rs=-0.73; rs=-0.82; rs=-0.76; rs=-0.79), p<0.001. Conclusion: Children with CP showed deficit in motor quality and skills of the upper limb, allowing to infer functional limitations regarding manipulation of objects and consequent dependence during life activities

The spasticity in the motor and functional disability in adults with post-stroke hemiparetic
Abstract Introduction: Spasticity acts as a limiting factor in motor and functional recovery after Stroke, impairing the performance of daily living activities. Objective: To analyze the influence of spasticity on main muscle groups and to associate it with motor impairment and functional level of chronic hemiparetic patients after stroke. Methods: Twenty-seven chronic hemiparetic patients of both sexes were selected at the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Service of the Unicamp Clinics Hospital. Assessments were carried out in two sessions, in the first one the motor impairment (Fugl-Meyer Assessment - FM) and functional impairment (Barthel Index - BI) were evaluated, and in the second, the degree of spasticity of the main muscle groups (Modified Ashworth Scale - MAS). Results: A negative correlation was detected between upper limb spasticity and motor and functional impairment. No muscle group evaluated in the lower limbs showed correlation between muscle tone and the level of impairment of the lower extremity on FM and the functional level measured by BI. Conclusion: Spasticity has been shown to be a negative influence factor in the level of motor and functional impairment of the upper limbs of chronic hemiparetic patients after stroke
