    A Risk-Based Methodology and Tool Combining Threat Analysis and Power System Security Assessment

    A thorough investigation of power system security requires the analysis of the vulnerabilities to natural and man-related threats which potentially trigger multiple contingencies. In particular, extreme weather events are becoming more and more frequent due to climate changes and often cause large load disruptions on the system, thus the support for security enhancement gets tricky. Exploiting data coming from forecasting systems in a security assessment environment can help assess the risk of operating power systems subject to the disturbances provoked by the weather event itself. In this context, the paper proposes a security assessment methodology, based on an updated definition of risk suitable for power system risk evaluations. Big data analytics can be useful to get an accurate model for weather-related threats. The relevant software (SW) platform integrates the security assessment methodology with prediction systems which provide short term forecasts of the threats affecting the system. The application results on a real wet snow threat scenario in the Italian High Voltage grid demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach with respect to conventional security approaches, by complementing the conventional "N - 1" security criterion and exploiting big data to link the security assessment phase to the analysis of incumbent threat

    Através técnicas de rotina para histopatologia foram examinados fígados de bovinos, bubalinos e ovinos infectados por Fasciola hepatica. As colorações utilizadas foram Hematoxilina- Eosina, Tricrômico de Schorr, Tricrômico de Mallory e Azul de Toluidina. As principais lesões observadas foram cortes de parasitas em ductos biliares, fibrose portal, hiperplasia de ducto biliar, fibrose de parede de ducto biliar e infiltração por linfócitos, plasmócitos, eosinófilos e neutrófilos. Lesões de ductos biliares mais calibrosos são observados mais acentuadamente em bovinos e bubalinos que em ovinos. No entanto, a eosinofilia está presente de forma mais acentuada em ovinos que nas demais espécies. Comparando os resultados obtidos, conclui-se que a fasciolose em bovinos e bubalinos se trata de uma doença crônica. Nos ovinos o predomínio de eosinófilos caracteriza fase inicial de fasciolose crônica. Hepatopathology of infection by Fasciola hepatica in cattle, buffaloes and sheep Abstract A histopathological study on hepatic lesions caused by Fasciola hepatica has been carried out three domestic ruminants: cattle, buffalos and sheep. Liver samples were processed by routine histological methods. The staining procedures included hematoxilin-eosine, Schorr (triple staining), Mallory (triple staining) and toluidine blue. The most frequent lesions found were the following ones: parasite sections inside the billiary ducts, portal system fibrosis and billiary duct hyperplasia. Lymphocytes, plasmocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils, characteristics of a chronic disease, were found in bovines and bubalines. The presence of eosinophils in sheeps was characteristic of the initial phase of a chronic fascioliasis

    Benchmarking and Validation of Cascading Failure Analysis Tools

    Cascading failure in electric power systems is a complicated problem for which a variety of models, software tools, and analytical tools have been proposed but are difficult to verify. Benchmarking and validation are necessary to understand how closely a particular modeling method corresponds to reality, what engineering conclusions may be drawn from a particular tool, and what improvements need to be made to the tool in order to reach valid conclusions. The community needs to develop the test cases tailored to cascading that are central to practical benchmarking and validation. In this paper, the IEEE PES working group on cascading failure reviews and synthesizes how benchmarking and validation can be done for cascading failure analysis, summarizes and reviews the cascading test cases that are available to the international community, and makes recommendations for improving the state of the art

    Lhx1 Is Required for Specification of the Renal Progenitor Cell Field

    In the vertebrate embryo, the kidney is derived from the intermediate mesoderm. The LIM-class homeobox transcription factor lhx1 is expressed early in the intermediate mesoderm and is one of the first genes to be expressed in the nephric mesenchyme. In this study, we investigated the role of Lhx1 in specification of the kidney field by either overexpressing or depleting lhx1 in Xenopus embryos or depleting lhx1 in an explant culture system. By overexpressing a constitutively-active form of Lhx1, we established its capacity to expand the kidney field during the specification stage of kidney organogenesis. In addition, the ability of Lhx1 to expand the kidney field diminishes as kidney organogenesis transitions to the morphogenesis stage. In a complimentary set of experiments, we determined that embryos depleted of lhx1, show an almost complete loss of the kidney field. Using an explant culture system to induce kidney tissue, we confirmed that expression of genes from both proximal and distal kidney structures is affected by the absence of lhx1. Taken together our results demonstrate an essential role for Lhx1 in driving specification of the entire kidney field from the intermediate mesoderm

    Dosimetric characterization of a large area pixel-segmented ionization chamber.

    A pixel-segmented ionization chamber has been designed and built by Torino University and INFN. The detector features a 24 x 24 cm2 active area divided in 1024 independent cylindrical ionization chambers and can be read out in 500 micros without introducing dead time; the digital charge quantum can be adjusted between 100 fC and 800 fC. The sensitive volume of each single ionization chamber is 0.07 cm3. The purpose of the detector is to ease the two-dimensional (2D) verifications of fields with complex shapes and large gradients. The detector was characterized in a PMMA phantom using 60Co and 6 MV x-ray photon beams. It has shown good signal linearity with respect to dose and dose rate to water. The average sensitivity of a single ionization chamber was 2.1 nC/Gy, constant within 0.5% over one month of daily measurements. Charge collection efficiency was 0.985 at the operating polarization voltage of 400 V and 3.5 Gy/min dose rate. Tissue maximum ratio and output factor have been compared with a Farmer ionization chamber and were found in good agreement. The dose profiles have been compared with the ones obtained with an ionization chamber in water phantom for the field sizes supplied by a 3D-Line dynamic multileaf collimator. These results show that this detector can be used for 2D dosimetry of x-ray photon beams, supplying a good spatial resolution and sensibly reducing the time spent in dosimetric verification of complex radiation fields

    Bioimpedance Phase Angle as a Prognostic Tool in Late-Onset Pompe Disease: A Single-Centre Prospective Study With a 15-year Follow-Up

    Background: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) is an autosomal-recessive metabolic myopathy caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme Acid Alpha\u2014Glucosidase (GAA), leading to glycogen accumulation in proximal and axial muscles, and in the diaphragm. Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) with recombinant GAA became available in 2006. Since then, several outcome measures have been investigated for the adequate follow-up of disease progression and treatment response, usually focusing on respiratory and motor function. Prognostic factors predicting outcome have not been identified till now. Methods: In this single Centre, prospective study, we evaluate the response to enzyme replacement therapy in 15 patients (7 males) with LOPD in different stages of disease, aged 49.4 \ub1 16.1, followed-up for 15 years. Treatment response was measured by the 6-min walking test, vital capacity in supine and upright position, respiratory muscle strength, muscle MRI, manual muscle testing. We investigated the usefulness of Body Impedance Vectorial Analysis for serial body composition assessment. Results: Although most patients with LOPD benefit from long-term treatment, some secondary decline may occur after the first 3\u20135 years. Some nutritional (lower body mass index, higher fat free mass, higher phase angle) and disease parameters (higher creatinine and shorter disease duration at the beginning of treatment) seem to predict a better motor outcome. Lower Phase Angle, possibly reflecting loss of integrity of skeletal muscle membranes and thus treatment mis-targeting, seems to correlate with worse treatment response on long-term follow-up. Conclusion: Body Impedance Vectorial Analysis is a fast, easily performed and cheap tool that may be able to predict long-term treatment response in patients with LOPD. Low Phase angle may serve as a marker of muscle quality and may be used to predict the response to a muscle-targeted intervention such as ERT, thus improving the identification of patients needing a closer follow-up due to higher fragility and risk of deterioration
