Ergodic property of Markovian semigroups on standard forms of von Neumann algebras

We give sufficient conditions for ergodicity of the Markovian semigroups associated to Dirichlet forms on standard forms of von Neumann algebras constructed by the method proposed in Refs. [Par1,Par2]. We apply our result to show that the diffusion type Markovian semigroups for quantum spin systems are ergodic in the region of high temperatures where the uniqueness of the KMS-state holds.Comment: 25 page

GUIDELINES FOR A DIGITAL REINTERPRETATION OF ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION WORK: REALITY-BASED MODELS AND REVERSE MODELLING TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO THE ARCHITECTURAL DECORATION OF THE TEATRO MARITTIMO, VILLA ADRIANA

Get PDF
The Maritime Theatre is one of the iconic buildings of Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli. The state of conservation of the theatre is not only the result of weathering over time, but also due to restoration work carried out during the Fifties of the past century. Although this anastylosis process had the virtue of partially restoring a few of the fragments of the compound's original image, it now reveals diverse inconsistencies and genuine errors in the reassembling of the fragments. This study aims at carrying out a digital reinterpretation of the restoration of the architectural fragments in relation to the architectural order, with particular reference to the miscellaneous decoration of the frieze of the Teatro Marittimo (vestibule and atrium). Over the course of the last few years the Teatro Marittimo has been the target of numerous surveying campaigns using digital methodology (laser scanner and photogrammetry SfM/MVS). Starting with the study of the remains of the opus caementicium on the ground, it is possible to identify surfaces which are then used in the model for subsequent cross sections, so as to achieve the best fitting circumferences to use as reference points to put the fragments back into place

Design of a cybernetic hand for perception and action

Get PDF
Strong motivation for developing new prosthetic hand devices is provided by the fact that low functionality and controllability—in addition to poor cosmetic appearance—are the most important reasons why amputees do not regularly use their prosthetic hands. This paper presents the design of the CyberHand, a cybernetic anthropomorphic hand intended to provide amputees with functional hand replacement. Its design was bio-inspired in terms of its modular architecture, its physical appearance, kinematics, sensorization, and actuation, and its multilevel control system. Its underactuated mechanisms allow separate control of each digit as well as thumb–finger opposition and, accordingly, can generate a multitude of grasps. Its sensory system was designed to provide proprioceptive information as well as to emulate fundamental functional properties of human tactile mechanoreceptors of specific importance for grasp-and-hold tasks. The CyberHand control system presumes just a few efferent and afferent channels and was divided in two main layers: a high-level control that interprets the user’s intention (grasp selection and required force level) and can provide pertinent sensory feedback and a low-level control responsible for actuating specific grasps and applying the desired total force by taking advantage of the intelligent mechanics. The grasps made available by the high-level controller include those fundamental for activities of daily living: cylindrical, spherical, tridigital (tripod), and lateral grasps. The modular and flexible design of the CyberHand makes it suitable for incremental development of sensorization, interfacing, and control strategies and, as such, it will be a useful tool not only for clinical research but also for addressing neuroscientific hypotheses regarding sensorimotor control

Correlating Noble Rot Infection of Garganega Withered Grapes with Key Molecules and Odorants of Botrytized Passito Wine

Get PDF
Experimental passito wines with dierent percentages of naturally noble-rotten grapes of the Garganega variety were analyzed to evaluate key molecules and odorants related to the typical aroma and sensory profile of botrytized passito wine. Remarkable changes in the concentration of 1-octen-3-ol, 4-terpineol, benzaldehyde, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide, and sherry lactone 1 and 2 were observed between sound and noble-rotten wines. Wines were perceived to be dierent for floral, honey, figs, apricot, and caramel scents. By partial least square regression these descriptors were well correlated to samples. An important positive contribution of sherry lactones, N-(3-methylbutyl)acetamide, vanillin, benzaldehyde, and -butyrolactone to honey, apricot, and caramel was observed. It is conceivable that oxidative eects of Botrytis cinerea infection play an important role in the genesis of these chemical and sensory aroma markers. This study provides a predictive tool for winemakers that use natural grape withering to produce wines whose aroma profile is not standardized due to the seasonal variation of noble rot incidence

Evaluation of phenotype-driven gene prioritization methods for Mendelian diseases.

Yuan et al. recently described an independent evaluation of several phenotype-driven gene prioritization methods for Mendelian disease on two separate, clinical datasets. Although they attempted to use default settings for each tool, we describe three key differences from those we currently recommend for our Exomiser and PhenIX tools. These influence how variant frequency, quality and predicted pathogenicity are used for filtering and prioritization. We propose that these differences account for much of the discrepancy in performance between that reported by them (15-26% diagnoses ranked top by Exomiser) and previously published reports by us and others (72-77%). On a set of 161 singleton samples, we show using these settings increases performance from 34% to 72% and suggest a reassessment of Exomiser and PhenIX on their datasets using these would show a similar uplift

The frequency of endometriosis in the general and selected populations: A systematic review

Get PDF
Background: In this article, we have reviewed available data on the frequency of endometriosis considering separately the incidence and the prevalence of the disease using data from papers published from 2000 to June 2019. Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. PubMed and EMBASE were searched for observational studies reporting data on the incidence or prevalence rates or ratios for the following pre-specified populations: general population, infertile women, women reporting pelvic pain, women who underwent pelvic surgical procedures unrelated with endometriosis. Results: A total of 42 papers were included in this review. Considering the 11 studies that have analysed the prevalence of endometriosis in the general population, the reported prevalence ranged from 0.8% to 28.6% with an overall estimated of 4.4% (95% CI 3.6–5.2). When we considered separately the estimates reported in each study according to geographic area, the pooled estimate was lower in the European studies (1.4%), increased to 5.7% in the US studies and was 15.4% in the Asian ones. The pooled estimated prevalence of endometriosis was 33.5% (95% CI 24.3–42.8, Figure 2(c)) in women who underwent surgery for benign gynaecological conditions, 23.8% (95% CI 16.1–31.5, Figure 2(d)) in infertile women, and 49.7 % (95% CI 14.4–85.0) in women with chronic pelvic pain. Conclusion: This review offers an overview of the available data on the frequency of endometriosis in the general population and in selected population, in particular among infertile women and women with chronic pelvic pain

Targeted mutagenesis of the female-suppressor sygi gene in tetraploid kiwifruit by crispr/cas9

Kiwifruit belong to the genus Actinidia with 54 species apparently all functionally dioecious. The sex-determinants of the type XX/XY, with male heterogametic, operate independently of the ploidy level. Recently, the SyGI protein has been described as the suppressor of female development. In the present study, we exploited the CRISPR/Cas9 technology by targeting two different sites in the SyGI gene in order to induce a stable gene knock-out in two tetraploid male accessions of Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis. The two genotypes showed a regenerative efficiency of 58% and 73%, respectively. Despite not yet being able to verify the phenotypic effects on the flower structure, due to the long time required by tissue-cultured kiwifruit plants to flower, we obtained two regenerated lines showing near fixation of a unique modification in their genome, resulting in both cases in the onset of a premature stop codon, which induces the putative gene knock-out. Evaluation of gRNA1 locus for both regenerated plantlets resulted in co-amplification of a minor variant differing from the target region for a single nucleotide. A genomic duplication of the region in proximity of the Y genomic region could be postulated

Get PDF
