Carbon sp chains in graphene nanoholes

Nowadays sp carbon chains terminated by graphene or graphitic-like carbon are synthesized routinely in several nanotech labs. We propose an ab-initio study of such carbon-only materials, by computing their structure and stability, as well as their electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties. We adopt a fair compromise of microscopic realism with a certain level of idealization in the model configurations, and predict a number of properties susceptible to comparison with experiment.Comment: 34 pages, 27 figure

Gate-tuneable and chirality-dependent charge-to-spin conversion in tellurium nanowires

Chiral materials are an ideal playground for exploring the relation between symmetry, relativistic effects and electronic transport. For instance, chiral organic molecules have been intensively studied to electrically generate spin-polarized currents in the last decade, but their poor electronic conductivity limits their potential for applications. Conversely, chiral inorganic materials such as tellurium have excellent electrical conductivity, but their potential for enabling the electrical control of spin polarization in devices remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the all-electrical generation, manipulation and detection of spin polarization in chiral single-crystalline tellurium nanowires. By recording a large (up to 7%) and chirality-dependent unidirectional magnetoresistance, we show that the orientation of the electrically generated spin polarization is determined by the nanowire handedness and uniquely follows the current direction, while its magnitude can be manipulated by an electrostatic gate. Our results pave the way for the development of magnet-free chirality-based spintronic devices. This work is supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN) under projects RTI2018-094861-B-100 and PID2019-108153GA-I00 and under the Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence Programme (MDM-2016-0618); by the European Union Horizon 2020 under the Marie Slodowska-Curie Actions (0766025-QuESTech and 892983-SPECTER); and by Intel Corporation under ‘FEINMAN’ and ‘VALLEYTRONICS’ Intel Science Technology Centers. A new way of deblocking of synthetic hexachlorofluorescein-oligodeoxyribonucleotides (HEX-ODN) prevents the modification of the label and the accumulation of difficult to separated by-product. It was shown that this method increases the efficiency of purification HEX-ON and the sensitivity of DNA diagnostics.Новый способ деблокирования синтетических гексахлорфлуоресцеин-олигодезоксирибонук-леотидов (HEX-ODN) препятствует модификации метки и накоплению трудно отделяемого побочного продукта. Emergence of large spin-charge interconversion at an oxidized Cu/W interface

Spin-orbitronic devices can integrate memory and logic by exploiting spin-charge interconversion (SCI), which is optimized by design and materials selection. In these devices, interfaces are crucial elements as they can prohibit or promote spin flow in a device as well as possess spin-orbit coupling resulting in interfacial SCI. Therefore, investigation of interfaces in spin-orbitronic devices is important. Here, we study the origin of SCI in a Py/Cu/W lateral spin valve and quantify its efficiency. An exhaustive characterization of the interface between Cu and W electrodes uncovers the presence of an oxidized layer (WOx). We determine that the SCI occurs at the Cu/WOx interface with a temperature-independent interfacial spin-loss conductance of G∥≈20×1013Ω−1m−2 and an interfacial spin-charge conductivity σSC=−1600Ω−1cm−1 at 10 K (−800Ω−1cm−1 at 300 K). This corresponds to an efficiency given by the inverse Edelstein length λIEE=− 0.8nm at 10 K (−0.4nm at 300 K), which is remarkably larger than in metal/metal and metal/oxide interfaces and bulk heavy metals. The large SCI efficiency at such an oxidized interface makes it a promising candidate for the magnetic readout in MESO logic devices. This work was supported by Intel Corporation through the Semiconductor Research Corporation under MSR-INTEL TASK 2017-IN-2744 and the “FEINMAN” Intel Science Technology Center, and by the Spanish MICINN under the Maria de Maeztu Units of Excellence Programme (Grants No. MDM-2016-0618 and No. CEX2020-001038-M) and under Projects No. RTI2018-094861-BI00, No. PID2020-117671GB-I00, No. PID2020-112811GBI00, No. PID2021-122511OB-I00, PID2020-114252GB-I00 (SPIRIT), and TED2021-130292B-C42. Sonar Estimation of Methane Bubble Flux from Thawing Subsea Permafrost: A Case Study from the Laptev Sea Shelf

    Get PDF
Seeps found offshore in the East Siberian Arctic Shelf may mark zones of degrading subsea permafrost and related destabilization of gas hydrates. Sonar surveys provide an effective tool for mapping seabed methane fluxes and monitoring subsea Arctic permafrost seepage. The paper presents an overview of existing approaches to sonar estimation of methane bubble flux from the sea floor to the water column and a new method for quantifying CH4 ebullition. In the suggested method, the flux of methane bubbles is estimated from its response to insonification using the backscattering cross section. The method has demonstrated its efficiency in the case study of single- and multi-beam acoustic surveys of a large seep field on the Laptev Sea shelf

Approximately 30% of patients with symptomatic epilepsy have pharmacoresistant seizures refractory to medical therapy. The most effective treatment modality is microsurgical resection of whole epileptogenic zone, not only visible on MRI lesion. However, in some cases patients still have seizures after operation. We provide a method of simultaneous EEG-fMRI to more accurate localization of epileptogenic zone after failed surgery. Here we present our experience of gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery for patient harboring mesial temporal lobe epilepsy using EEG-fMRI for confirmation of residual epileptogenic zone.
