    A new methodology for innovative product development based on the application of sustainability principles for the entire life-cycle of a product and beyond is developed. This involves an analysis of multi-life cycle material flow leading towards perpetual life products, making it truly sustainable. In order to achieve the function of such a sustainable product, it has to fulfill the concept of 6R (Recover, Reuse, Recycle, Redesign, Reduce and Remanufacture), which are composed of 6 stages of material flow in a products life, as opposed to the traditional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recover) concept. We apply the 6R concept in designing a new aluminum beverage can with much enhanced sustainability factors, especially in recycling processes

    A Convolutional Neural Network for Network Intrusion Detection System

    System administrators can benefit from deploying Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) to find potential security breaches. However, security attacks tend to be unpredictable. There are many challenges to develop a flexible and effective NIDS in order to prevent high false alarm rates and low detection accuracy against unknown attacks. In this paper, we propose a deep learning method to implement an effective and flexible NIDS. We used a convolutional neural network (CNN), an advanced deep learning technique, on NSL-KDD, a benchmark dataset for network intrusion. Our experimental results of a 99.79% detection rate when compared against the NSL-KDD test dataset show that CNNs can be applied as a learning method for Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs)

    Formation and distribution of calcium crystals in the trunk of Hopea odorata

    Some of trees accumulate calcium crystals, which cause damage to cutting tools in wood machinery. For the fundamental information on the formation and distribution of calcium crystal in a trunk, Hopea odorata was very important to be studied. Three discs from lower, middle and upper positions of the trunk were collected. In each disk, radial strip from bark to pith was fixed with 3% glutaraldehyde. In each disc, small blocks from outer, middle, inner part and pith were cut and used for microscopic observation. Sections were stained with safranin and fast green. Morphology and distribution of calcium crystals in a trunk (radial and longitudinal) and quantitative analysis were carried out. Acid treatments with hydrochloric acid or acetic acid were also applied to investigate the chemical characteristic of the crystals. For comparison of morphology of calcium crystals between wood and bark, bark block was embedded in epoxy resin, and sections were stained with safranin. Crystals in wood were exclusively included in square/ upright ray cells with very rare cases of crystals in procumbent ray cells of ray parenchyma. Their morphology was prismatic crystals in wood and pith. In the bark, crystals showed druses form. Through chemical treatments, calcium crystals were identified as calcium oxalate. In the trunk, crystals were increased from outer to inner in the radial direction, but decreased in the pith. In the longitudinal direction, crystals showed an increase from lower to upper position in the outer and middle part, but decreased at inner part. Pith did not show much difference from lower to upper position of the trunk

    A new measure based on degree distribution that links information theory and network graph analysis

    BACKGROUND: Detailed connection maps of human and nonhuman brains are being generated with new technologies, and graph metrics have been instrumental in understanding the general organizational features of these structures. Neural networks appear to have small world properties: they have clustered regions, while maintaining integrative features such as short average pathlengths. RESULTS: We captured the structural characteristics of clustered networks with short average pathlengths through our own variable, System Difference (SD), which is computationally simple and calculable for larger graph systems. SD is a Jaccardian measure generated by averaging all of the differences in the connection patterns between any two nodes of a system. We calculated SD over large random samples of matrices and found that high SD matrices have a low average pathlength and a larger number of clustered structures. SD is a measure of degree distribution with high SD matrices maximizing entropic properties. Phi (Φ), an information theory metric that assesses a system’s capacity to integrate information, correlated well with SD - with SD explaining over 90% of the variance in systems above 11 nodes (tested for 4 to 13 nodes). However, newer versions of Φ do not correlate well with the SD metric. CONCLUSIONS: The new network measure, SD, provides a link between high entropic structures and degree distributions as related to small world properties

    Global Transcriptomic Responses of Roseithermus sacchariphilus Strain RA in Media Supplemented with Beechwood Xylan

    The majority of the members in order Rhodothermales are underexplored prokaryotic extremophiles. Roseithermus, a new genus within Rhodothermales, was first described in 2019. Roseithermus sacchariphilus is the only species in this genus. The current report aims to evaluate the transcriptomic responses of R. sacchariphilus strain RA when cultivated on beechwood xylan. Strain RA doubled its growth in Marine Broth (MB) containing xylan compared to Marine Broth (MB) alone. Strain RA harbors 54 potential glycosyl hydrolases (GHs) that are affiliated with 30 families, including cellulases (families GH 3, 5, 9, and 44) and hemicellulases (GH 2, 10, 16, 29, 31,43, 51, 53, 67, 78, 92, 106, 113, 130, and 154). The majority of these GHs were upregulated when the cells were grown in MB containing xylan medium and enzymatic activities for xylanase, endoglucanase, β-xylosidase, and β-glucosidase were elevated. Interestingly, with the introduction of xylan, five out of six cellulolytic genes were upregulated. Furthermore, approximately 1122 genes equivalent to one-third of the total genes for strain RA were upregulated.
