A Multidisciplinary Study of the Tongerlo Last Supper and its Attribution to Leonardo Da Vinci’s Second Milanese Studio
This article presents the findings from a two-year study of the Last Supper canvas in the Abbey of Tongerlo, Belgium, including a detailed review of its provenance as well as a multispectral study conducted by IMEC and IPARC. The study used a composite multidisciplinary approach, with traditional connoisseurship and literary research augmented by scientific examination, including IRR (Infrared Reflectography). The article argues that based on the available evidence, the Tongerlo Last Supper was produced in Leonardo’s Milanese workshop between 1507 and 1509, as a collaborative project involving the Leonardeschi Giampietrino, Andrea Solario, and Marco d’Oggiono under Leonardo’s supervision. Furthermore, the infrared spectography scans suggest that the face of John in the painting was painted by Leonardo himself.Questo articolo presenta i risultati di uno studio durato due anni della tela raffigurante l'Ultima Cena nell'Abbazia di Tongerlo, in Belgio. From Metabolism to Ecology:Cross-Feeding Interactions Shape the Balance between Polymicrobial Conflict and Mutualism
Polymicrobial interactions are widespread in nature, and play a major role in maintaining human health and ecosystems. Whenever one organism uses metabolites produced by another organism as energy or nutrient sources, this is called cross-feeding. The ecological outcomes of cross-feeding interactions are poorly understood and potentially diverse: mutualism, competition, exploitation or commensalism. A major reason for this uncertainty is the lack of theoretical approaches linking microbial metabolism to microbial ecology. To address this issue, we explore the dynamics of a one-way interspecific cross-feeding interaction, in which food can be traded for a service (detoxification). Our results show that diverse ecological interactions (competition, mutualism, exploitation) can emerge from this simple cross-feeding interaction, and can be predicted by the metabolic, demographic and environmental parameters that govern the balance of the costs and benefits of association. In particular, our model predicts stronger mutualism for intermediate by-product toxicity because the resource-service exchange is constrained to the service being neither too vital (high toxicity impairs resource provision) nor dispensable (low toxicity reduces need for service). These results support the idea that bridging microbial ecology and metabolism is a critical step towards a better understanding of the factors governing the emergence and dynamics of polymicrobial interactions
Beyond Transactional Narratives of Agency: Peer Consultants’ Antiracist Professionalization
Social justice movements, especially Black Lives Matter, inspired many writing center administrators to reflect on their commitments to antiracism and engage with antiracist professional development with their staff. However, there is continued need to study the impact antiracist professional development has on writing center consultants’ ability to practice antiracism in sessions. This article presents a predominantly white institution (PWI) writing center’s attempt to do this work, with a particular emphasis on how antiracist professional development complicates portrayals of consultant agency within the writing center. The study analyzes qualitative data collected from consultants’ reflective writing, survey, and interview responses. Results illustrate that, in the context of enacting antiracism in and beyond the writing center, consultants showed messy, partial, and incomplete forms of agency with the professional development curriculum impacting consultants of color and white consultants differently. These findings suggest writing center studies must embrace an understanding of antiracist professional development that is reflective, fragmented, and iterative, and identify more concrete practices of antiracist consulting
Probing the Density in the Galactic Center Region: Wind-Blown Bubbles and High-Energy Proton Constraints
Recent observations of the Galactic center in high-energy gamma-rays (above
0.1TeV) have opened up new ways to study this region, from understanding the
emission source of these high-energy photons to constraining the environment in
which they are formed. We present a revised theoretical density model of the
inner 5pc surrounding Sgr A* based on the fact that the underlying structure of
this region is dominated by the winds from the Wolf-Rayet stars orbiting Sgr
A*. An ideal probe and application of this density structure is this high
energy gamma-ray emission. We assume a proton-scattering model for the
production of these gamma-rays and then determine first whether such a model is
consistent with the observations and second whether we can use these
observations to further constrain the density distribution in the Galactic

Homozygous in-frame deletion in CATSPERE in a man producing spermatozoa with loss of CatSper function and compromised fertilizing capacity
STUDY QUESTIONDoes a man (patient 1) with a previously described deficiency in principle cation channel of sperm (CatSper) function have a mutation in the CatSper-epsilon (CATSPERE) and/or CatSper-zeta (CATSPERZ) gene?SUMMARY ANSWERPatient 1 has a homozygous in-frame 6-bp deletion in exon 18 (c.2393_2398delCTATGG, rs761237686) of CATSPERE.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADYCatSper is the principal calcium channel of mammalian spermatozoa. Spermatozoa from patient 1 had a specific loss of CatSper function and were unable to fertilize at IVF. Loss of CatSper function could not be attributed to genetic abnormalities in coding regions of seven CatSper subunits. Two additional subunits (CatSper-epsilon (CATPSERE) and CatSper-zeta (CATSPERZ)) were recently identified, and are now proposed to contribute to the formation of the mature channel complex.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATIONThis was a basic medical research study analysing genomic data from a single patient (patient 1) for defects in CATSPERE and CATSPERZ.PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODSThe original exome sequencing data for patient 1 were analysed for mutations in CATSPERE and CATSPERZ. Sanger sequencing was conducted to confirm the presence of a rare variant.MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCEPatient 1 is homozygous for an in-frame 6-bp deletion in exon 18 (c.2393_2398delCTATGG, rs761237686) of CATSPERE that is predicted to be highly deleterious.LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTIONThe nature of the molecular deficit caused by the rs761237686 variant and whether it is exclusively responsible for the loss of CatSper function remain to be elucidated.WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGSPopulation genetics are available for a significant number of predicted deleterious variants of CatSper subunits. The consequence of homozygous and compound heterozygous forms on sperm fertilization potential could be significant. A UV to Mid-IR Study of AGN Selection
We classify the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 431,038 sources in
the 9 sq. deg Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS). There
are up to 17 bands of data available per source, including ultraviolet (GALEX),
optical (NDWFS), near-IR (NEWFIRM), and mid-infrared (IRAC/MIPS) data, as well
as spectroscopic redshifts for ~20,000 objects, primarily from the AGN and
Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES). We fit galaxy, AGN, stellar, and brown dwarf
templates to the observed SEDs, which yield spectral classes for the Galactic
sources and photometric redshifts and galaxy/AGN luminosities for the
extragalactic sources. The photometric redshift precision of the galaxy and AGN
samples are sigma/(1+z)=0.040 and sigma/(1+z)=0.169, respectively, with the
worst 5% outliers excluded. Based on the reduced chi-squared of the SED fit for
each SED model, we are able to distinguish between Galactic and extragalactic
sources for sources brighter than I=23.5. We compare the SED fits for a
galaxy-only model and a galaxy+AGN model. Using known X-ray and spectroscopic
AGN samples, we confirm that SED fitting can be successfully used as a method
to identify large populations of AGN, including spatially resolved AGN with
significant contributions from the host galaxy and objects with the emission
line ratios of "composite" spectra. We also use our results to compare to the
X-ray, mid-IR, optical color and emission line ratio selection techniques. For
an F-ratio threshold of F>10 we find 16,266 AGN candidates brighter than I=23.5

Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA): Giant Planets, Oscillations, Rotation, and Massive Stars
We substantially update the capabilities of the open source software package
Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), and its one-dimensional
stellar evolution module, MESA Star. Improvements in MESA Star's ability to
model the evolution of giant planets now extends its applicability down to
masses as low as one-tenth that of Jupiter. The dramatic improvement in
asteroseismology enabled by the space-based Kepler and CoRoT missions motivates
our full coupling of the ADIPLS adiabatic pulsation code with MESA Star. This
also motivates a numerical recasting of the Ledoux criterion that is more
easily implemented when many nuclei are present at non-negligible abundances.
This impacts the way in which MESA Star calculates semi-convective and
thermohaline mixing. We exhibit the evolution of 3-8 Msun stars through the end
of core He burning, the onset of He thermal pulses, and arrival on the white
dwarf cooling sequence. We implement diffusion of angular momentum and chemical
abundances that enable calculations of rotating-star models, which we compare
thoroughly with earlier work. We introduce a new treatment of
radiation-dominated envelopes that allows the uninterrupted evolution of
massive stars to core collapse. This enables the generation of new sets of
supernovae, long gamma-ray burst, and pair-instability progenitor models. We
substantially modify the way in which MESA Star solves the fully coupled
stellar structure and composition equations, and we show how this has improved
MESA's performance scaling on multi-core processors. Updates to the modules for
equation of state, opacity, nuclear reaction rates, and atmospheric boundary
conditions are also provided. We describe the MESA Software Development Kit
(SDK) that packages all the required components needed to form a unified and
