A Search for EUV Emission from Comets with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS)
We have obtained EUV spectra between 90 and 255 \AA of the cometsC/2002 T7
(LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) near their perihelion
passages in 2004 with the Cosmic Hot Interstellar Plasma Spectrometer (CHIPS).
We obtained contemporaneous data on Comet NEAT Q4 with the X-ray
Observatory ACIS instrument, marking the first simultaneous EUV and X-ray
spectral observations of a comet. The total CHIPS/EUV observing times were 337
ks for Q4, 234 ks for T7, and 483 ks for Machholz and for both CHIPS and
we calculate we have captured all the comet flux in the instrument
field of view. We set upper limits on solar wind charge exchange emission lines
of O, C, N, Ne and Fe occurring in the spectral bandpass of CHIPS. The spectrum
of Q4 obtained with can be reproduced by modeling emission lines of
C, N O, Mg, Fe, Si, S, and Ne solar wind ions. The measured X-ray emission line
intensities are consistent with our predictions from a solar wind charge
exchange model. The model predictions for the EUV emission line intensities are
determined from the intensity ratios of the cascading X-ray and EUV photons
arising in the charge exchange processes. They are compatible with the measured
limits on the intensities of the EUV lines. For comet Q4, we measured a total
X-ray flux of 3.7 ergs cm s, and derive from
model predictions a total EUV flux of 1.5 erg cm
s. The CHIPS observations occurred predominantly while the satellite was
on the dayside of Earth. For much of the observing time, CHIPS performed
observations at smaller solar angles than it was designed for and EUV emission
from the Sun scattered into the instrument limited the sensitivity of the EUV

se explican los modelos de comportamiento de los cuales se obtuvieron las
variables utilizadas para estructurar una encuesta que se aplico a una muestra
de empresas regionales, con el objeto de realizar un diagnostico organizacional.
Luego se procedió a un análisis de los datos, que permitió detectar que existen
algunas funciones organizacionales que deben ser mejor utilizadas, tanto en
forma particular como integral, de tal manera de que las empresas regionales
alcancen condiciones para enfrentarse exitosamente al cambio
Simulation of truncated normal variables
We provide in this paper simulation algorithms for one-sided and two-sided
truncated normal distributions. These algorithms are then used to simulate
multivariate normal variables with restricted parameter space for any

Evidence for He I 10830 \AA~ absorption during the transit of a warm Neptune around the M-dwarf GJ 3470 with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder
Understanding the dynamics and kinematics of out-flowing atmospheres of hot
and warm exoplanets is crucial to understanding the origins and evolutionary
history of the exoplanets near the evaporation desert. Recently, ground based
measurements of the meta-stable Helium atom's resonant absorption at 10830
\AA~has become a powerful probe of the base environment which is driving the
outflow of exoplanet atmospheres. We report evidence for the He I 10830 \AA~in
absorption (equivalent width \AA) in the exosphere of
a warm Neptune orbiting the M-dwarf GJ 3470, during three transits using the
Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF) near infrared spectrograph. This marks the
first reported evidence for He I 10830 \AA\, atmospheric absorption for a
planet orbiting an M-dwarf. Our detected absorption is broad and its
blueshifted wing extends to -36 km/sec, the largest reported in the literature
to date. We modelled the state of Helium atoms in the exosphere of GJ3470b
based on assumptions on the UV and X-ray flux of GJ 3470, and found our
measurement of flux-weighted column density of meta-stable state Helium
, derived from our transit
observations, to be consistent with model, within its uncertainties. The
methodology developed here will be useful to study and constrain the
atmospheric outflow models of other exoplanets like GJ 3470b which are near the

Ecological niche modeling of the invasive potential of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus in African river systems: concerns and implications for the conservation of indigenous congenerics
This study applied ecological niche models to determine the potential invasive range of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, with a particular focus on river systems in southern Africa where it is now established and spreading. Computational tools such as niche models are useful in predicting the potential range of invasive species, but there are limitations to their application. In particular, models trained on native records may fail to predict the full extent of an invasion. This failure is often attributed to changes in either the niche of the invading species or the variables used to develop the models. In this study, we therefore evaluated the differences in the predictive power of models trained with different environmental variables, the effect of species range (native vs. introduced) on model performance and assessed whether or not there is evidence suggestive of a niche shift in Nile tilapia following its introduction. Niche models were constructed using Maxent and the degree of niche similarity was assessed using Schoener‘s index. Null models were used to test for significance. Model performance and niche conservatism varied significantly with variable selection and species range. This indicates that the environmental conditions available to Nile tilapia in its native and introduced ranges are not congruent. Nile tilapia exhibited broad invasive potential over most of southern Africa that overlaps the natural range of endemic congenerics. Of particular concern are areas which are free of exotic species but are now vulnerable due to the promotion of fish introductions mainly for aquaculture and sport fishing
Persistent starspot signals on M dwarfs: multi-wavelength Doppler observations with the Habitable-zone Planet Finder and Keck/HIRES
Young, rapidly-rotating M dwarfs exhibit prominent starspots, which create
quasiperiodic signals in their photometric and Doppler spectroscopic
measurements. The periodic Doppler signals can mimic radial velocity (RV)
changes expected from orbiting exoplanets. Exoplanets can be distinguished from
activity-induced false positives by the chromaticity and long-term incoherence
of starspot signals, but these qualities are poorly constrained for
fully-convective M stars. Coherent photometric starspot signals on M dwarfs may
persist for hundreds of rotations, and the wavelength dependence of starspot RV
signals may not be consistent between stars due to differences in their
magnetic fields and active regions. We obtained precise multi-wavelength RVs of
four rapidly-rotating M dwarfs (AD Leo, G 227-22, GJ 1245B, GJ 3959) using the
near-infrared (NIR) Habitable-zone Planet Finder, and the optical Keck/HIRES
spectrometer. Our RVs are complemented by photometry from Kepler, TESS, and the
Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) network of telescopes. We found that all four
stars exhibit large spot-induced Doppler signals at their rotation periods, and
investigated the longevity and optical-to-NIR chromaticity for these signals.
The phase curves remain coherent much longer than is typical for Sunlike stars.
Their chromaticity varies, and one star (GJ 3959) exhibits optical and NIR RV
modulation consistent in both phase and amplitude. In general, though, we find
that the NIR amplitudes are lower than their optical counterparts. We conclude
that starspot modulation for rapidly-rotating M stars frequently remains
coherent for hundreds of stellar rotations, and gives rise to Doppler signals
that, due to this coherence, may be mistaken for exoplanets.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Less than 10 percent of star formation in z=0.6 massive galaxies is triggered by major interactions
Both observations and simulations show that major tidal interactions or
mergers between gas-rich galaxies can lead to intense bursts of starformation.
Yet, the average enhancement in star formation rate (SFR) in major mergers and
the contribution of such events to the cosmic SFR are not well estimated. Here
we use photometric redshifts, stellar masses and UV SFRs from COMBO-17, 24
micron SFRs from Spitzer and morphologies from two deep HST cosmological survey
fields (ECDFS/GEMS and A901/STAGES) to study the enhancement in SFR as a
function of projected galaxy separation. We apply two-point projected
correlation function techniques, which we augment with morphologically-selected
very close pairs (separation <2 arcsec) and merger remnants from the HST
imaging. Our analysis confirms that the most intensely star-forming systems are
indeed interacting or merging. Yet, for massive (M* > 10^10 Msun) star-forming
galaxies at 0.4<z<0.8, we find that the SFRs of galaxies undergoing a major
interaction (mass ratios <1:4 and separations < 40 kpc) are only 1.80 +/- 0.30
times higher than the SFRs of non-interacting galaxies when averaged over all
interactions and all stages of the interaction, in good agreement with other
observational works.
We demonstrate that these results imply that <10% of star formation at 0.4 <
z < 0.8 is triggered directly by major mergers and interactions; these events
are not important factors in the build-up of stellar mass since z=1.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 41 pages, 11 figure

GEO 600 is unique in having advanced multiple pendulum suspensions with a monolithic last stage and in employing a signal recycled optical design. Towards Solving QCD - The Transverse Zero Modes in Light-Cone Quantization
We formulate QCD in (d+1) dimensions using Dirac's front form with periodic
boundary conditions, that is, within Discretized Light-Cone Quantization. The
formalism is worked out in detail for SU(2) pure glue theory in (2+1)
dimensions which is approximated by restriction to the lowest {\it transverse}
momentum gluons. The dimensionally-reduced theory turns out to be SU(2) gauge
theory coupled to adjoint scalar matter in (1+1) dimensions. The scalar field
is the remnant of the transverse gluon. This field has modes of both non-zero
and zero {\it longitudinal} momentum. We categorize the types of zero modes
that occur into three classes, dynamical, topological, and constrained, each
well known in separate contexts. The equation for the constrained mode is
explicitly worked out. The Gauss law is rather simply resolved to extract
physical, namely color singlet states. The topological gauge mode is treated
according to two alternative scenarios related to the In the one, a spectrum is
found consistent with pure SU(2) gluons in (1+1) dimensions. In the other, the
gauge mode excitations are estimated and their role in the spectrum with
genuine Fock excitations is explored. A color singlet state is given which
satisfies Gauss' law. Its invariant mass is estimated and discussed in the
