Sex Differences in Mechanical Aptitude: An Investigation of Sex Differences in Mechanical Aptitude and Its Relation to Nonverbal Abilities
This study investigates sex differences in mechanical abilities. Numerous research findings support the existence of sex differences in mechanical aptitude as well as in other abilities. Recent research suggests that there is a relationship between mechanical aptitude and certain nonverbal reasoning (e.g., visual-spatial) abilities. Due to the possible links between these constructs, sex differences in a nonverbal measure of general intellectual functioning, made up of five subtests, were also evaluated. Thus, the purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate sex differences in mechanical aptitude and nonverbal abilities, and to explore the construct validity of all the measures employed. Females and males were compared in terms of their performance on two mechanical aptitude tests and one test of nonverbal abilities. It was expected that, on average, men would do better on both of the mechanical aptitude tests. The construct validity of all the measures was investigated by correlating the scores on the various instruments and by comparing the results obtained with the expectations suggested by the empirical literature on sex differences. Thus far, all the major hypotheses have been confirmed. However, these results are based on a smaller sample than originally planned. Little research has been conducted examining the basis for the reported sex differences in mechanical aptitude. Mechanical aptitude tests are used extensively in selection procedures for mechanical jobs. A study investigating the validity of two of these measures and the differential performance of each sex group on them is quite timely because more women are seeking employment in areas that require mechanical abilities
Detection of Babesia divergens in southern Norway by using an immunofluorescence antibody test in cow sera
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The incidence of bovine babesiosis, caused by <it>Babesia divergens </it>(Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) has decreased markedly since the 1930 s, but may re-emerge as a consequence of climate change and changes in legislation and pasturing practices. This is a potentially serious disease, with both economical and animal welfare consequences. Therefore, there is a need to survey the distribution of <it>B. divergens</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We tested sera from 306 healthy pastured cows from 24 farms along the southern Norwegian coast by using an indirect immunofluorescence IgG antibody test (IFAT). Fractions of seropositive cows were compared by calculating 95% CI.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results of this test showed that 27% of the sera were positive for <it>B. divergens </it>antibodies. The fraction of antibody-positive sera that we detected showed a two-humped distribution, with a high fraction of positives being found in municipalities in the western and eastern parts of the study area, while the municipalities between these areas had few or no positive serum samples.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Neither the farmers' observations nor the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System give an adequate picture of the distribution of bovine babesiosis. Serological testing of cows by using IFAT is a convenient way of screening for the presence of <it>B. divergens </it>in an area.</p
Periodic magnetoconductance fluctuations in triangular quantum dots in the absence of selective probing
We have studied the magnetoconductance of quantum dots with triangular
symmetry and areas down to 0.2 square microns, made in a high mobility
two-dimensional electron gas embedded in a GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure.
Semiclassical simulations show that the gross features in the measured
magnetoconductance are caused by ballistic effects. Below 1 K we observe a
strong periodic oscillation, which may be explained in terms of the
Aharanov-Bohm flux quantization through the area of a single classical periodic
orbit. From a numerical and analytical analysis of possible trajectories in
hard- and soft-walled potentials, we identify this periodic orbit as the
enscribed triangle. Contrary to other recent experiments, this orbit is not
accessible by classical processes for the incoming collimated beam.Comment: RevTex 8 pages, including 5 postscript figure
Chandrasekhar-Kendall functions in astrophysical dynamos
Some of the contributions of Chandrasekhar to the field of
magnetohydrodynamics are highlighted. Particular emphasis is placed on the
Chandrasekhar-Kendall functions that allow a decomposition of a vector field
into right- and left-handed contributions. Magnetic energy spectra of both
contributions are shown for a new set of helically forced simulations at
resolutions higher than what has been available so far. For a forcing function
with positive helicity, these simulations show a forward cascade of the
right-handed contributions to the magnetic field and nonlocal inverse transfer
for the left-handed contributions. The speed of inverse transfer is shown to

Origin of Long Lived Coherences in Light-Harvesting Complexes
A vibronic exciton model is developed to investigate the origin of long lived
coherences in light-harvesting complexes. Using experimentally determined
parameters and uncorrelated site energy fluctuations, the model predicts
oscillations in the nonlinear spectra of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex
with a dephasing time of 1.3 ps at 77 K. These oscillations correspond to the
coherent superposition of vibronic exciton states with dominant contributions
from vibrational excitations on the same pigment. Purely electronic coherences
are found to decay on a 200 fs timescale.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
A preliminary study on the induction of dioestrous ovulation in the mare â a possible method for inducing prolonged luteal phase
BACKGROUND: Strong oestrous symptoms in the mare can cause problems with racing, training and handling. Since long-acting progesterone treatment is not permitted in mares at competition (e.g. according to FEI rules), there is a need for methods to suppress unwanted cyclicity. Spontaneous dioestrous ovulations in the late luteal phase may cause a prolongation of the luteal phase in mares. METHODS: In this preliminary study, in an attempt to induce ovulation during the luteal phase, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (3000 IU) was injected intramuscularly in four mares (experimental group) in the luteal phase when a dioestrous follicle â„ 30 mm was detected. A fifth mare included in this group was not treated due to no detectable dioestrous follicles â„ 30 mm. Four control mares were similarly injected with saline. The mares were followed with ultrasound for 72 hours post injection or until ovulation. Blood samples for progesterone analysis were obtained twice weekly for one month and thereafter once weekly for another two to four months. RESULTS: Three of the hCG-treated mares ovulated within 72 hours after treatment and developed prolonged luteal phases of 58, 68 and 82 days respectively. One treated mare never ovulated after the hCG injection and progesterone levels fell below 3 nmol/l nine days post treatment. Progesterone levels in the control mares were below 3 nmol/l within nine days after saline injection, except for one mare, which developed a spontaneously prolonged luteal phase of 72 days. CONCLUSION: HCG treatment may be a method to induce prolonged luteal phases in the mare provided there is a dioestrous follicle â„ 30 mm that ovulates post-treatment. However, the method needs to be tested on a larger number of mares to be able to draw conclusions regarding its effectiveness
Effective suckling in relation to naked maternal-infant body contact in the first hour of life: an observation study
Background
Best practice guidelines to promote breastfeeding suggest that (i) mothers hold their babies in naked body contact immediately after birth, (ii) babies remain undisturbed for at least one hour and (iii) breastfeeding assistance be offered during this period. Few studies have closely observed the implementation of these guidelines in practice. We sought to evaluate these practices on suckling achievement within the first hour after birth.
Methods
Observations of seventy-eight mother-baby dyads recorded newborn feeding behaviours, the help received by mothers and birthing room practices each minute, for sixty minutes.
Results
Duration of naked body contact between mothers and their newborn babies varied widely from 1 to 60 minutes, as did commencement of suckling (range = 10 to 60 minutes). Naked maternal-infant body contact immediately after birth, uninterrupted for at least thirty minutes did not predict effective suckling within the first hour of birth. Newborns were four times more likely to sustain deep rhythmical suckling when their chin made contact with their motherâs breast as they approached the nipple (OR 3.8; CI 1.03 - 14) and if their mothers had given birth previously (OR 6.7; CI 1.35 - 33). Infants who had any naso-oropharyngeal suctioning administered at birth were six times less likely to suckle effectively (OR .176; CI .04 - .9).
Conclusion
Effective suckling within the first hour of life was associated with a collection of practices including infants positioned so their chin can instinctively nudge the underside of their motherâs breast as they approach to grasp the nipple and attach to suckle. The best type of assistance provided in the birthing room that enables newborns to sustain an effective latch was paying attention to newborn feeding behaviours and not administering naso-oropharyngeal suction routinely

Primordial Magnetic Fields and Causality
We discuss the implications of causality on a primordial magnetic field. We
show that the residual field on large scales is much more suppressed than
usually assumed and that a helical component is even more reduced. Due to this
strong suppression, even maximal primordial fields generated at the electroweak
phase transition can just marginally seed the fields in clusters, but they
