    Fine-Grained Head Pose Estimation Without Keypoints

    Estimating the head pose of a person is a crucial problem that has a large amount of applications such as aiding in gaze estimation, modeling attention, fitting 3D models to video and performing face alignment. Traditionally head pose is computed by estimating some keypoints from the target face and solving the 2D to 3D correspondence problem with a mean human head model. We argue that this is a fragile method because it relies entirely on landmark detection performance, the extraneous head model and an ad-hoc fitting step. We present an elegant and robust way to determine pose by training a multi-loss convolutional neural network on 300W-LP, a large synthetically expanded dataset, to predict intrinsic Euler angles (yaw, pitch and roll) directly from image intensities through joint binned pose classification and regression. We present empirical tests on common in-the-wild pose benchmark datasets which show state-of-the-art results. Additionally we test our method on a dataset usually used for pose estimation using depth and start to close the gap with state-of-the-art depth pose methods.     Increased eye contact during parent-child versus clinician-child interactions in young children with autism

    Accumulating evidence suggests that when parents are actively involved in therapy, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have better outcomes, yet it is unknown whether children with ASD significantly alter their social behaviour with their parent versus a clinician. During a face-to-face interaction, young children (N = 27, ages 18-60 months) with ASD demonstrated longer durations and higher frequencies of eye contact with their parent compared to a clinician. Children also made more eye contact during snack versus interactive play with both their parent and the clinician, which is consistent with our prior work. The findings suggest that despite social communication difficulties associated with ASD, children with ASD demonstrated increased eye contact with their parent

    One-Pot Combinatorial Biosynthesis of Glycosylated Anthracyclines by Cocultivation of <i>Streptomyces</i> Strains Producing Aglycones and Nucleotide Deoxysugars

    Anthracyclines, such as doxorubicin, are effective anticancer drugs composed of a tetracyclic polyketide aglycone and one or more deoxysugar moieties, which play a critical role in their biological activity. A facile one-pot combinatorial biosynthetic system was developed for the generation of a range of glycosylated derivatives of anthracyclines. Cocultivation of <i>Streptomyces venezuelae</i> mutants producing two anthracycline aglycones with eight different nucleotide deoxysugar-producing <i>S. venezuelae</i> mutants that coexpress a substrate-flexible glycosyltransferase led to the generation of 16 aklavinone or ε-rhodomycinone glycosides containing diverse deoxysugar moieties, seven of which are new. This demonstrates the potential of the one-pot combinatorial biosynthetic system based on cocultivation as a facile biological tool capable of combining diverse aglycones and deoxysugars to generate structurally diverse polyketides carrying engineered sugars for drug discovery and development
