    Two-dimensional mapping of triaxial strain fields in a multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film using scanning x-ray microdiffraction

    The dramatically enhanced polarizations and saturation magnetizations observed in the epitaxially constrained BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films with their pronounced grain-orientation dependence have attracted much attention and are attributed largely to the constrained in-plane strain. Thus, it is highly desirable to directly obtain information on the two-dimensional (2D) distribution of the in-plane strain and its correlation with the grain orientation of each corresponding microregion. Here the authors report a 2D quantitative mapping of the grain orientation and the local triaxial strain field in a 250 nm thick multiferroic BFO film using a synchrotron x-ray microdiffraction technique. This direct scanning measurement demonstrates that the deviatoric component of the in-plane strain tensor is between 5x10(-3) and 6x10(-3) and that the local triaxial strain is fairly well correlated with the grain orientation in that particular region.     Unions, Health and Safety Committees, and Workplace Accidents in the Korean Manufacturing Sector

    AbstractBackgroundDespite the declining trend of workplace accidents in Republic of Korea, its level is still quite high compared with that in other developed countries. Factors that are responsible for high workplace accidents have not been well documented in Republic of Korea. The main purpose of this paper is to estimate the effects of unions and health and safety committees on workplace accidents in Korean manufacturing firms. We also allow for the interactions between unions and health and safety committees in the analysis. The results obtained in this paper will not only contribute to the literature in this field, but might also be useful for employers and worker representatives who are trying to find an effective way to reduce workplace accidents.MethodsThis paper utilizes the 2012 Occupational Safety and Health Trend Survey data, which is a unique data set providing information on workplace injuries and illness as well as other characteristics of participatory firms, representative of the manufacturing industry in Republic of Korea.ResultsIn estimating the effects of unions and health and safety committees, we build a negative binomial regression model in which the interactions between unions and health and safety committees are permissible in reducing workplace accidents.ConclusionHealth and safety committees were found to reduce the incidence of accidents whereas unionized establishments have higher incidence of accidents than nonunionized establishments. We also found that health and safety committees can more effectively reduce accidents in nonunionized establishments. By contrast, nonexclusive joint committees can more effectively reduce accidents in unionized establishments

    Advances in pultiple-pulse radio-frequency-gradient imaging of solids

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the premier tool for the non-destructive evaluation of soft tissue in living systems [1]. Established liquid-state MRI strategies are generally found to be inappropriate for the imaging of rigid solids, because the linewidth for nuclear magnetic resonance in solids is orders-of-magnitude larger than in liquids. Methods currently under development for the NMR imaging of solids either involve the use of very large (fringe-field) magnetic field gradients to encode spatial information over very short periods of time [2], or employ multiple-pulse line-narrowing techniques that prolong a solid’s apparent transverse relaxation time [3–7]. In the latter methods, the magnetic field gradients may be much weaker, but must generally be pulsed synchronously with the line-narrowing sequence.     Nanoscale strain mapping in battery nanostructures

    Coherent x-ray diffraction imaging is used to map the local three dimensional strain inhomogeneity and electron density distribution of two individual LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-δ cathode nanoparticles in both ex-situ and in-situ environments. Our reconstructed images revealed a maximum strain of 0.4%. We observed different variations in strain inhomogeneity due to multiple competing effects. The compressive/tensile component of the strain is connected to the local lithium content and, on the surface, interpreted in terms of a local Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn 3+. Finally, the measured strain distributions are discussed in terms of their impact on competing theoretical models of the lithiation process. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC

    Giant dielectric permittivity was observed in La-modified PbTiO3 (PLT) with A-site vacancy. The observed values of PLT with A-site vacancy are 1 order of magnitude larger than those of relaxor ferroelectrics. The giant relative dielectric permittivity, coupled with a low dielectric loss (tan delta approximate to 0.03) of the PLT, potentially makes it one of the most promising materials for numerous modem technological applications.open11123sciescopu

    Assessment of the Italian version of the Internet Disorder Scale (IDS-15)

    Much research has focused on the validation of psychometric tools assessing Internet addiction. One of the newest measures is the Internet Disorder Scale (IDS-15) based on the modified IGD criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This study aimed at investigating the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the IDS-15 by examining the construct and the concurrent and the criterion-related validity and by identifying the taxonomy and the patterns of Internet users. A sample of 471 participants (Mage = 24.72 years, SD = 8.66; 256 males) was recruited from secondary schools, universities, and gaming halls. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the four-dimensional second-order structure and the three levels of the measurement invariance across gender. The reliability and the validity of the scale were confirmed, and the LPAs provided four classes of Internet users on the basis of the scores obtained in all four dimensions of the scale. The psychometric robustness of the Italian version of the IDS-15 was clearly demonstrated. Cross-cultural research should expand and generalize the present findings

    Electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding of multiwalled carbon nanotube composites containing Fe catalyst

    Thin and flexible composite films of raw or purified multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with various mass fractions and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) were synthesized for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material. From scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy photographs, we observed the formation of a conducting network through MWCNTs in an insulating PMMA matrix and the existence of an Fe catalyst in MWCNTs. The dc conductivity (sigma(dc)) of the systems increased with increasing MWCNT mass fraction, showing typical percolation behavior. The measured EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of MWCNT-PMMA composites by using the extended ASTM D4935-99 method (50 MHz-13.5 GHz) increased with increasing MWCNT mass fraction as sigma(dc). The highest EMI SE for raw MWCNT-PMMA composites was similar to27 dB, indicating commercial use for far-field EMI shielding. The contribution of absorption to total EMI SE of the systems is larger than that of reflection. Based on magnetic permeability, we suggest raw MWCNTs and their composites can be used for near-field EMI shielding.open28629

    Linear and Partly-Pseudo-Linear Cryptanalysis of Reduced-Round SPARX Cipher

    We propose a new cryptanalytic technique and key recovery attack for the Sparx cipher, Partly-Pseudo-Linear Cryptanalysis, a meet-in-the-middle attack combining linear and pseudo-linear approximations. We observe improvements over the linear hull attacks in the literature for Sparx 128/128 and 128/256. Additionally, we generate another attack for comparison purposes, using the Cho-Pieprzyk property for a fully-linear approximation and a corresponding key recovery attack. We observe improvements on the data complexity, bias, and number of recovered key bits, over all variants of Sparx, when compared to the use of only the Cho-Pieprzyk approximation
